Why did people turn over the tops of their wellingtons?

Stops them flapping on your calves when you walk....this is regular cut rubber wellies of old  of course. Modern vinyl, or shaped rubber Hunter types are more tailored, therefore  dont flap.

I have to lean on something when I put mine on nowadays. Expanding belly and aches and pains make it difficult.

As if I didn't have enough inferiority complexes.

Got a feeling I'm  being set up here but ........As deep as feels safe, depending on current and river  bottom structure. In still water with firm underfoot, to within 4 inches of top of chest waders... in the sea , not deep at all , mainly for wading to places or on a beach depends on sea conditions, rip tides etc..nowadays I always wear self inflating lifejacket.

No set up mate. Just interested. Never been fly fishing or ever waded. Just the usual cast from the bank. Never used one of them dirty cheating poles either.
