Signed a contract extension today, been doing well with the u23s and training with the first team - so fourth in line?

Has Barden been getting games anywhere?

Seem to have some talented goalies in the pipeline, got to be a good thing!

At least he wasn't christened Phil. I used to know a guy named Richard Head and I used to date a girl called Teresa Green

Hard to know exactly how the club rate all our huge pipeline of goalies, but could be argued that he will be behind Oxborough when he is fit again and is also behind Archie Mair who is already out on loan playing mens football - so is sixth in line.

I knew a Richard Hunt. Clearly his parents didn't think that one through.

And then there's Joe Rose, to whom we've just given a long contract. Oxborough is 22, is only under contract for another 18 months and has never played a game higher than Conference South level, so I have my doubts as to whether he'll make it. Of course you could say that he's been playing for our U23s to get to know 'the system', but my gut feeling is that no goalkeeper will come straight into our first team squad without at least being tested on loan at a professional team to see how they handle the pressure.

Similarly, McCracken has only been given a one-year extension and will be 21 by the summer, so this seems more like a 'last-chance saloon' or an opportunity for us to recoup a nominal fee for him rather than an investment in him as one for our first-team future.

I'm presuming Oxborough would have been filling Barden's role as number three had he not been injured, so Barden's had an unexpected opportunity to impress with the first-team setup. If Barden isn't perceived as being good enough, my instinct is that Archie Mair will be given 'number three' duties next season (unless we decide to go with Krul, McGovern and another experienced keeper if we get promoted).

Lots of totally unsubstantiated conjecture there, but I do love keeping an eye on our conveyor belt of goalkeeping talent... 🙂

Oxborough was going to join Salford on loan before his injury was he not?

Yes, he was - he was also sub for us in the Sheffield Wednesday game in the Championship two seasons ago.

Don't forget Archie Mair and Aston Oxborough.
