cambridgeshire canary 7,799 Posted December 8, 2020 (edited) 'Ben Gibson will be out for this game, he has problems with his calf and will be out for 2 weeks. Przemyslaw Placheta is also out with a hamstring strain, it's the same timeframe. Todd Cantwell has been involved in parts of team training. If he trains today without issue, he will definitely be involved tomorrow. He's not fully prepared for 90 minutes but could be part of the squad. Tim Krul is improving every day. He will hopefully be back very soon. ' Edited December 8, 2020 by cambridgeshire canary

Canary Wundaboy 1,423 Posted December 8, 2020 So only 2 fit CBs and with Gibson out there goes our last piece of LB cover without Marco. Someone wrap Sorensen in cotton wool please.

GJL Mid-Norfolk Canary 2,035 Posted December 8, 2020 Seriously think we should consider recalling every player out on loan in January....just cant afford for this to continue and be caught out like this in the second half of the season
overthebordercanary 160 Posted December 8, 2020 Will we actually play a game this season with a full strength squad?
Hank shoots Skyler 2,094 Posted December 8, 2020 Wow just when things were starting to look more positive, what a joke this is turning into! I thought we may actually have more than two senior players on the bench as an option for tomorrow, but clearly not... And two weeks doesn't seem a lot, but that's still 4 games... and 4 more games for an even more depleted squad to get through. This is really painful. At least we do have direct replacements in Zimmermann and Martin, but we are at the barest of bare bones now.
Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 4,620 Posted December 8, 2020 Well at least we have two options to come straight in for Placheta and Gibson in Martin and Zimmermann. It does however highlight again how dangerous it was to go into the season with only three centre backs, as we're now only one more injury to Hanley or Zimmermann away from Tettey or Omobamidele being thrown in. 9 minutes ago, overthebordercanary said: Will we actually play a game this season with a full strength squad? To be fair, it's incredibly rare that any team anywhere ever plays a game with a full strength squad. And on the bright side, Cantwell might make the bench by the sounds of it and Hugill, Dowell and McLean are all ready to start training, so there is some good news. Canary Wundaboy 1,423 Posted December 8, 2020 I fully expect to see mass loan recalls in Jan. While giving players first team football is important for their development, they're needed here and we're the ones paying their wages (sortof).
king canary 8,758 Posted December 8, 2020 McCallum and Famewo certainly need to come back- even if we get Xavi back soon, we need Sorenson as a central midfield option, rather than as a makeshift fullback.

Jim Smith 2,610 Posted December 8, 2020 (edited) We won;t need to recall players in January (except maybe Macullum) because we will have a lot back by then. The danger really is the number of games that key players will miss even if only out for 2-3 weeks at the moment. in a normal season that might only be 3 or 4 games but at the moment its 6. And as others have said its 6 games where we cannot rest anyone else half fit or cover injuries. The positive spin is that it sounds like Cantwell may be fit enough to feature in the next week or so and that in 2 weeks time we may hopefully have Cantwell, Rupp, Krul, Hugill and maybe Mclean back in first team contention. Dowell I suspect may need a little longer. Edited December 8, 2020 by Jim Smith

Even if everyone's fit, we'll still only have one specialist left back and three centre backs, which is probably still one light for each position unless you want take a massive gamble on players staying fit- a gamble which has already failed with Quintilla getting injured. Fortunately Sorensen is doing well as a makeshift.
Branston Pickle 4,150 Posted December 8, 2020 Problem is that issues at the back were foreseeable and not wholly unexpected, given that this season was more compact and would see weekend-midweek matches than normal. To go into it with so few players in some positions was plain daft.
TIL 1010 5,246 Posted December 8, 2020 It is going to be a major achievement if our injury list gets down to single figures at any stage this season.
lake district canary 4,830 Posted December 8, 2020 Not a disaster at all. Gibson has done well so far but there is something reassuring that Zimmermann will be back in the team. He is an inspiration and arguably our best central defender. So Gibson gets a rest and a chance to take stock. We also have alternatives for Placheta too. Others gradually returning to training so we are ok - just. Just got to keep our nerve and keep believing.

I will disagree with you there, I think Hanley and Gibson have done pretty well together and have looked more solid.

Placheta is a big miss tomorrow because we don't really have any raw pace to replace with.
keelansgrandad 6,680 Posted December 8, 2020 I don't think we have a doctor at the club. I think he joined us from Dewhursts. The games are coming thick and fast and I wonder how much they need to train anymore. Is rest a better option especially right now.
Midlands Yellow 4,682 Posted December 8, 2020 You can’t guess who the next player is to be on the sidelines. Looked like Aaron’s was in for a chunky spell but it ends up 2 players who seemed fine post Sheffield Wednesday match. Do they just pick them out of a hat leading up to the next game. I thought Hanley and Zimbo looked pretty decent when fit and paired together earlier this spring so not too worried there, C - though I agree, I think Gibson has been great. The plus I guess we can take from this is that all players retained for the campaign have all got a run out now and we’ve seen at least glimpses of what they’re about. We might never have known what Sorensen was like at this stage if it hadn’t come about through necessity. I’m confident if (fingers crossed!) Ben and Lukas are back in 2 weeks then in Sorensen we have a player that we know can definitely do a good job at LB, and also, more assuringly, I feel CB too. Quality player there. The key issue is navigating the next 2 to 3 weeks. From there on in, with players returning and an open window, I think we’ll be alright.

It is a bit ridiculous being quite so open - it does seem counter-intuitive at times, such as Coventry who knew we had next to no one fit, could pretty much guess our lineup and take advantage of it (as they did).
