Good news and a game changer...but as with the likes of Liverpool and Man City bleating about wanting 5 subs in the Premier Lge, lets not pretend its about fitness. If we're a goal down with 15 mins left..just as the likes of Man City and Liverpool, Chelsea in theirs , they're not taking off their most 'unfit' player....they're taking off a defender or midfielder to thrown on another striker to turn the game their way. hogesar 9,611 Posted November 18, 2020 I think the way we've been playing it does help the opposition too. We've benefitted from having a huge amount of possession, and chasing the ball is so much more tiring, as evidence by our late goals. Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 3,776 Posted November 18, 2020 It's clearly a rule that favours the bigger clubs with deeper squads, but if you're going to implement the rule (and for me it's the right move) then it's something that really should've been in place from the start of the season rather than changing it halfway through. Branston Pickle 3,632 Posted November 18, 2020 (edited) I’m not really a fan of this generally, as it will tend to be advantageous to certain sides with bigger/more experienced squads (though in this division that includes us so I suppose I shouldn’t complain too much!).  But with the sheer number of games coming up it will surely be of help for all sides in protecting players...we all have 9 games in 4 weeks up to 19/12 which will be tough to get through without injuries. The only issue for us is that it doesn’t really help with our weaker areas (l/b, c/b) as that is more down to a shortage of personnel. BroadstairsR 2,137 Posted November 18, 2020 (edited) Unusual times require unusual measures so for that reason I'll go along with it, and it might even be of some benefit to City; as it would be for any squad with a shrewd coach and strength in depth. I, for one, wouldn't want it continued any longer than need be though. 'Keeper apart it means that half the team can be changed at any time during the game and that is, as I see it, a bit ridiculous and would be reminiscent of a pre-season friendly situation. All a bit unreal and I am, for some reason, now reminded of Sven's eleven subs in one international friendly game years ago (v. Australia?) More stoppages, chopping changing with tactics and time wasting will all result and we will, of course, have more scope to bring on Mario Vrancic for one of those last minute free kicks or even a penalty specialist, if we had one, at any time in the game, NFL style. It would also allow for so-called 'unit' substitutions rather than individual, ie. a whole defence, a whole attack depending upon the state of the game. Do we really want this? It would surely eventually alter the whole complex of any encounter once coaches worked out all the angles. A different ball game. Alex Moss 2,165 Posted November 18, 2020 I’m hoping this ruling will see a benefit for us in certain games where we’re hopefully winning quite comfortably and can bring on the likes of Josh Martin etc for some fairly regular minutes in the league that he and the others may not have got otherwise. I guess it could be countered that we should arguably be able to bring more quality on than anybody in this league, the vast majority probably don’t have equally as good players in reserve.  The other thing that crossed my mind is we can probably afford to be more intense in our urgency from the off knowing that we can replace not far off half the team earlier in the game whilst keeping that 1 sub back until late to cover for an injury or something. If we were still in the prem I would have been totally against it but being selfish this will make our top 3 chances a lot better.
