Mario Vrančić appreciation thread

I remember people saying Tettey's legs were suspect. About 5 years ago.

It's just an excuse to justify his exclusion when you can't rely on anything else.

Exactly this. There is absolutely nothing to suggest his “legs have gone”. Mario plays the game with his brain in any case.

Top of the thread should be Farke.

Without Mario this lat week we're 15th and I think people might be asking some questions.

Then all credit to Farke for his game management. Converted 2 draws into 2 wins with his substitutions 👍

Dug us out again! Absolute wand of a left foot on him, surely a candidate to start in the number 10 role behind Pukki who is now back amongst the goals

I happy to admit that Farke knows his players capabilities a bit better than me.

You were probably happy to admit the same of Neil.

As Adrian Coote said on Canary Call, If you start Vrancic, are you going to get a full, impactive, 90 minutes out of him, or would you feel he would be subbed off at 60-70 mins? He has the right attributes to hurt tiring teams in the last quarter

I want to see the dream team in central mid - Tettey and Vrancic. That's a quality man sandwich.

****. That free kick didn't go in because the opposition was tired.

Err no, but that wasn't the point. This isn't American Football, where you bring a kicker on either.

Maybe not, but it's far easier to draw a tired player into giving away a free kick.

Well....he was a massive part in us winning us promotion, got the goal to win the title and in a week he alone has won us 6 points!

Great player - have been boring my son every week telling him (in detaii😀)  why Vrancic should be starting, likewise Tettey.

Both Skipp and Rupp have shown some positives this season but IMO there is no doubt at all that Vrancic and Tettey are part of our strongest 11.

At the start of the season I would have said Emi was as well, but at the moment I think you've got to question why he is starting when Vrancic has delivered more in a few late substitute appearances than Emi has in 4 starts.

If you don't get a Vrancic on the pitch from the start he can't score after 4 minutes like he did away at Leeds. Class free kick players change games and it's not as if he is just a free kick specialist, he scores with left or right from virtually anywhere around or in the penalty area, plus his range of passing is inspirational. You get games where he might not do so well, but that is true of any player.  I know judging players' contributions is mostly worked out by looking at "stats" these days, but sometimes stats don't give you the whole picture. Those many points he won us two seasons ago were not just from the bench, he can produce something from nothing at any time.

That was 2 years ago Lakey. 2 years is a long time in football.

Was a fantastic free kick, but Looked like he dived to win it

with VAR today was totally different game !

So many incidents can be decided different also  pure dive by Mario and also back ball few yards back from foul spot.

Smart player and finally back to normal service since PL nightmare.

I'd be perfectly happy for him to be subbed at 60-70 mins after he has won the game for us - far less stressful than watching 80 minutes of us struggling before we ask him to pull another iron out of the fire 🙄

I don’t see what var would have changed - never enough in it for the penalty to be overruled and given, and it wouldn’t have changed a f/k situation.  It doesn’t look at yellow cards so Gibson’s for a perfectly reasonable tackle would have remained.

Mario will leave this club with cult hero status I reckon

He's  had cult status in this house since I first  saw him play , he's  all ability, no pace , no strength   , just  pure skill and vision.

What Coote was referring to was in the first quarter of a game, teams are tighter and are 'looser' in the last quarter. He is not head and shoulders above all are other players that he can influence a game for 90 minutes, otherwise he wouldn't be here

Whoa whoa. Three wins on the spin and you're trying to take people's only reason to moan away?! Shame on you.

Well we can not keep waiting for the last minute for Vrancic to save us so we need him to start or the other players to create / score in the 90 mins

so for me the form man starts if the others can not do what he does

Vrancic has saved us twice and won us 4 pts if we had drawn them games a lot of fans would not of  been happy

My real concern is Emi's lack of goals, fluffing a golden chance today again although he did set up Pukki.

I know what Coote was referring to and IMO it is completely irrelevant -  what Vrancic brings to the team is fantastic creative passing and terrific dead ball skills. Both of these things are important in all phases of the game, not just the last ten minutes, and both are things which have been largely absent in our starting line ups this season (and many of last season's for that matter).

Clearly at the moment he is head and shoulders above the rest of our midfield - that will hopefully not always be the case but until Emi finds his form of 2 years ago, or Todd finds his form of last year, or one of the newcomers steps up considerably then he is  delivering in 10 minutes what the rest are all failing to deliver in 90 minutes.

Team for Brentford on Tuesday seems straight forward for me now...moreso with the ban for Idah

Not sure if Brentford away was the place for Pukki and Hugill anyway, but if they both started, there'd be no striker to come off the bench in the last 20 mins

After his goal today, time to restore Pukki back up top..

This opens up the possibility of bringing Vrancic in without distrupting the Skipp/Rupp partnership..

       Krul

Aarons Hanley Gibson Quintilla

             Rupp   Skipp

 Buendia     Vrancic   Cantwell

                     Pukki

McGovern Zimmermann Tettey McLean Steipermann Placheta Hugill

Let's be honest, no one really gave away a free kick, we finally received the benefit of a ****e ref.

We've just won 2 games by using him as sub so why change?

He's started this season like he finished the season before last. If fitness is an issue it makes sense to bring him on when the opposition is tiring.

Class is permanent and he undoubtedly has that.  I would play him from the start in a game and see if he can win us the game and if he tires bring on a fresh player after 60/70 minutes - we have plenty of talent on the bench.

Also, good performances ought to be rewarded - and he has won us two matches now on the trot. In the normal scheme of things he would be rewarded with a start in the next match - and if you want to keep a player motivated, that is something that needs to be born in mind...unless of course Farke wants to keep him fired up by not starting him......

Whatever, I think that he should start a match now and if it goes well he stays in the team as long as we keep getting results - if he doesn't do well then fair enough put him back to the bench to be that impact player.  I'd rather win games with him scoring or making the goals earlier in a match than waiting for 80 minutes for Mario time every week.

It was quite interesting to see Buendia go and play deep for the last 15 minutes. He is a very effective player if we get him on the ball centrally as of course is Vrancic. Cantwell also played quite well when he went for 10 and it’s a shame about Idah as he added pace and directness we lacked.

Brentford are decent and play good football and we will need to be disciplined our self or we could be exposed so it’s a tough selection, I’ll be controversial but I would bring Tettey for Skipp and placheta for Hudgil and play Buendia more central.

krul

aarons, Hanley, Gibson, Quintilia

tettey

rupp, Buendia

cantwell, Pukki, Placheta
