Fitness

Recommended Posts

If you consider the fitness of the current 11 first teamers I would say we are well below being a fit and fully functioning team.  For example:

Gibson has played something like two matches in two years.

Hanley has hardly played since lockdown.

Idah has only played one full game at this level.

Steipermann has hardly played since lockdown.

Buendia hasn’t played too much recently.

just think the improvement in the team once they are fit and gelling.

Some fair points there although Steipermann hasn’t played  since our previous championship campaign!   He’s been shocking...  That he’s ahead of Martin and Vrancic is bizarre!

Given hes pretty much our only natural number 10 (with Dowell out) who else you suggesting we play in said role?

Buendia, I’d play him there and Placheta on the wing. That would be an interesting combo seeing Emi thread balls behind the back 4 for Placheta and Idah to run onto. With a fit Pukki in the middle to get the left overs.

Nope, Emi Buendia is a natural number 10, but we waste him out wide.

The really hilarious thing is that you actually think we play him out wide.

Well he’s more out wide than a No. 10.

It's amazing how many of our own fans haven't got a clue how we play when we're attacking and in possession. Most of the width in our attacks comes from the full backs. Buendia and Cantwell in particular are just as likely to turn up in a central position as they are out wide - our formation is very fluid - with lots of movement and interchanging when we're attacking.

Rubbish, the amount of time Buendia spent in his own half helping out Max Aarons last season was ridiculous.

If you can't see that Buendia plays as an inside forward on the right side of the pitch then you are the clueless one.

It's always very obvious who our central attacking mid / number 10 is, and it is seldom Buendia.

Which part of the phrase "how we play when we're attacking and in possession" don't you understand?

Which is precisely one of the reasons why I didn’t vote ‘Farke Out’ on the recent poll. Unfortunately though the only pro Farke option conveniently available meant you ridiculously had to opt in to have a statue built too.

Look forward to where we are in a few games time, I suspect better off 👍

He really hasn't. Showed some real quality in advanced positions yesterday. A couple of delightful through balls, and some great link up play.

To say it's bizarre that he's ahead of Martin is, well, quite frankly, bizarre! Your talking about a an experienced pro, proven at this level with numerous goals and assists and a key component of our promotion to the EPL.  Martin has no experience and hasn't proven a thing!

Vrancic, ok. There is an argument there.

Last time we got promoted Farke liked to keep a settled side so I would expect fitness of the starting 11 to improve as it takes around 10 games to get match fit.

Hopefully by then Farke will have found the last couple of pieces of the jigsaw and where they fit in I.e. Cantwell, Vrancic etc and gel. From there hopefully we can start to climb the table with some vigor.

Giving Farke until Christmas to sort us out is an extreme anti-Farke position then is it? That's the pragmatists choice.

Didn’t see the game Saturday (away) but I am comfortable responding generally!   He may we’ll have the odd influential game but that’s not enough and he’s just in The way of Josh Martin’s progress.   Martin has clear talent and potential, far more than Steipermann.

and turning to the facts..... just watch him closely....

In our Championship success, he made a contribution true but still so often the play broke down around him.   Fans suggest he offers us a different dimension, some robust big man option, but the facts and stats don’t bear it out.  He really isn’t strong.   Another is that he can shoot from distance!    Where’s the evidence?    He scored a couple from outside the area, a peach against Bristol, the QPR keeper should have saved that one in the 4-0 win and one other from the edge of the box.....and in the EPL, barn door with a banjo!!!!

Here’s the facts..... technically he’s probably our weakest player.....he produces some occasional good one touch stuff around the box but..... he doesn’t win tackles or headers, or create many chances, or link so well with Pukki (Buendia has always been the main supply for Pukki).    See EPL stats e.g. tackles won 40%, duels won 67, lost 127.... aerial battles won 15, lost 56.   Not strong!   Goals 0, assists 0, chances created 1, crosses 6, cross accuracy 0%.      That’s pretty miserable and consequently he lost his place and confidence!   He is not the same player as last time.in the Championship and also knows if we got promoted it would be the end for him.

Take our last pre-season friendly v Darmstadt, a pretty average team.... he was involved in the play 32 times, 15 passes 10 completed (3 of which back to a throw in), 1 influential pass, 1 shot and an air shot, 5 tackles of which he won 1, 10 ball control attempts of which he lost possession 7 times and 3 times he lost the ball cheaply resulting in counter attacks against us.    It was poor, those stats are not the kind that deserves inclusion in our team.    There are other aspects to performance like running and pressing...yes, he gets himself around the park but he doesn’t press that well either.    His confidence is no longer at the level where he did over-achieve in the championship!      This is not lies, this is what he produces and most times we are carrying him.    The Derby game, to be fair he was spot on for the first 10 minutes, some great interchange play but then he went missing again!

My view is that we should be developing EPL players as when we go up, (the plan) we will not need to sign so many to compete.   Steipermann (and Vrancic) will never step on an EPL pitch again, we all know that, so what’s the point.   If you think he can help us to get promoted (I think we have more chance with Martin), then that’s another player we have to replace as Martin and others won’t be ready in that scenario, similarly Idah.

If you still disagree, fair enough but watch him closely.    His touch often takes the ball to an opponent!    Oh and when he dives and squeals (he does that too often) it’s kind of embarrassing to watch.    Sadly not a fan and we have much better in the squad.
