The potential psychological impacts this match might have on the team?

Recommended Posts

So, there we were. Looking dull. The gray clouds rolling in. Muffled "Farke outs" being screamed on many messages across social media. The team looked devoid of hope. Sure, we were dominating but yet against getting nothing from it. And there it was. Rotherham get a chance and it's back of the net. Along come Norwich yet again it eems, this is Rotherham. Rotherham, not Liverpool.

But then all of a sudden the clouds fade. The sun beams down- It's an own goal! It's 1-1! Lucky? Prehaps. And then.. Yup, a red card. And so the pace quickens, the players look lively again. Could they steal a winner? And so there it was. 95th minute and Emi gets slammed to the floor. Pen! Of course, Hugill steps up. Goal. It's in. Wild scenes, almost a repeat of Sheffield Wed away and that famous Vrancic freekick.

Sure, it's against Rotherham who most would agree we should have beaten in the first place but.. It's a goal, 2-1 and a win, three points. You could see the joy. Not just on Hugill for converting the pen, but on the players. They looked changed. Happier. Full of joy. Shoudlers no longer slumped and that annoyed and upset "great here we go again" look to them. Smiles all round- Farke too, fist pumping joy. Could this be a turning point? Many might argue it was luck, but if so that's just how it is sometimes- That and statsticly Norwich did dominate.

But could this winner be a big boost the team, Farke and the club need? A big blast of 'good luck' or whatever you wish to call it (****housing would be a popular choice of words) and a last minute win to shake the Premier League hangover off for good?

TLDR- Could this last minute win be just the win to help Farke, the club and players psychologically return to a winner mentality and end the obvious hangover from the end of last season?

Point of order but that Vrancic freekick was at the FCR match not Hillsborough!

That said, I agree with things you say. This might just be this season's 'QPR moment'. When we beat them away 1-0 in our promotion season we had made a poor start and the natives were getting decidedly restless. That match was an unappealing performance with a seriously lucky goal when the ball hit Pukki in the chest and trickled over the line. What followed was a glorious history.

Make no mistake today was highly relevant. We all know it's been ages since we conceded the first goal and then came back to win so that monkey is now off our back! Another is that Farke showed some positive management for once and benched Pukki.  Whether it was a 'one off, tactical move' because of the physical nature of the opposition is, as yet, unclear but both Idah and Hugill deserve to keep their places for the next two home games. How refreshing also to (at last) see a 'Plan B' in the shape not only of our 'offensive' players but the positively Chris Wilder textbook equaliser. A lightning break, no messing around or tippy tappy (ultimately unsuccessful) Farke football and a super first time cross which was a defenders nightmare. The lurking 'big striker' would have buried it had the defender not obliged.

Hugill's interview on Rodeo Norfolk was a joy to listen to as well. The boy seemed excited (almost breathlessly so) and genuine keenness oozed from every word. Whilst not perhaps blessed with the technique of our great hero of the three Lambert years, the boy may well emerge as a genuine FCR contender for that mantle. How annoying and distressing that this bloody virus and the incompetent handling of it and cack handed regulations debars us from acclaiming him (and the others) during this season. 26k at FCR + the sell out travelling army could really drive this team back to the PL. As the Jock Stein statue outside  Parkhead says..........'Football without the fans is nothing'

Psychologically I think they'll probably have nightmares when they look back at the game.

It was a complete car crash of a game which we didn't deserve to win. Rotherham will wonder how on earth they managed to miss a pen, miss a few clear chances, get a red card and give a pen away.

That's football though, we'll take the three points, ban the players from watching the highlights and kick their **** ready for Tuesday.

It's only a turning point if we're psychologically prepared to have one. As a fan, I sincerely hope so!

At times Norwich City make things over-complicated; if mixing it up a bit helps confuse the opposition & puts a smile on the players faces (especially when there are no fans to help them), points-wise we could do well out of it.

We had more of the ball

We created more chances

We scored more goals.

What you're saying is rubbish, unfortunately.

Yep. Not our best performance but Rotherham didn't deserve to win and a quick look at their forums suggest they think similarly.

What did they think, a Norwich win was about right?

We scored 2, they scored 1. That’s all that matters. Remember that 0-0 vs Cardiff a few years ago? I think we had something like 31 shots. All that will matter (for the records) is the game finished 0-0.

Hopefully this breeds a winning mentality now. We still have a long way to go. But 3 points is a start.

I will never ever forget Sir Alex Ferguson raging at Arsenal in the FA Cup final once saying how his team had been better, had all the possession, all of the shots and Arsenal still won.

That is the beauty of football. Well, of many sports to be honest.

However, it is never luck.

We lost at home to Derby, where we arguably played better. We had 66% possession, 13 shots with 5 being on target and 7 corners. Derby in comparison had 34% possession, 3 shots with 2 being on target and 6 corners. Derby scored from a free kick with a world class free kick taker.

That wasn't luck. You have those players for exactly those moments.

So us winning with more possession, more chances and more efforts on goals isn't 'luck' either. Rotherham had a game plan. It is a game plan not all that uncommon when teams that consider themselves inferior to the teams they play against. They set out to disrupt and prevent us from getting into a rhythm. They played well, and fought well. They took the lead through what could be argued as 'luck'. Luck that Krul played a poor ball, luck that Hanley hadn't set himself and as a result was the wrong side of his player, a cool finish.

When we woke up and played the ball with zip we showed the class there is under the surface. Buendia out to Aarons who whipped in a delightful cross which Hugill would have surely finished if it wasn't for the defender doing it for him. That ball is what attacking players are told to play. You put it in an area where their players feel like they have to do something about it and their keeper dares not to. Then either they leave it and hope the finishing is poor or they try and do something about it and who knows? Not luck.

Nor was it luck when Buendia went down. He knew in the area in that position all he has to do is get there first. No contact and he is on goal inside the area and has a chance to shoot. And contact and it's a pen.

It wasn't by luck we won, and yes it was ugly and scrappy, but that's the nature of this league. It's physical, it's tough and some games you need to grind out wins rather than delicately dance your way to a romping. One thing we lacked last season was some cut and thrust where our fancy footwork wouldn't work.
