There is not loads and loads of cash available.

We are not desperate for a quality LB or CB.

This season's promotion will depend on whether the attack can rediscover it's goal scoring form.

Think that just about covers everything.

🙂

Think it was Michael Bailey who said Mumba and Gibson can play left back and that Sorensen will probably cover CB.

Be no transfers in today.

There’s quite a bit of cash available then.

I saw the thread title and thought, "Wow! I actually agree with Doomcaster for once!"... and then I read the opening sentence. However, the rest of the post is valid.

Whilst I agree with first sentence, I disagree with the second. Three centre backs and one left back is clearly inadequate for a minimum 48-game season (cups included) in a congested timeframe with two games a week. We need one more of each.

Because the 'let's just stick a midfielder in defence' approach worked so well last season with Tettey and Amadou.

We're short enough as it is in two positions, so using a player from one understocked position (Gibson) as cover for another boggles the mind.

That sounds surprisingly negative for you, did someone clone you or replace you? Wheres the real Lakey?

I just can't see Webber or Farke going out to get another CB. It's rather naive considering the problems we had last season, and even with Gibson we've failed to strengthen yet again, as he's seen as a direct replacement to Godfrey and we've lost Klose also.

With only Hanley as backup, and a fragile one at that, it's ridiculous NCFC put all their faith in players "versatility" who can allegedly play in other positions. As has been said that failed last season.

What with Argos also out for a lengthy spell we're looking thin, even if Cantwell & Buendia stay. Lack of ambition yet again City

To be fair much as I think klose is a great guy personality wise and I'm sure he will be missed in the dressing room

Klose is finished. Hes over, his almost career ending injury ruined him as did rushing him back and hes less agile than a fridge

Not exclusively.

A couple of injuries could easily see an extended period of Tettey in central defence- if that happens I don't think it hugely matters what the attack do.

Tettey, although not a specialist at CB is better than some give him credit for in that position.   Score enough and we'll get promoted, aftere all, we leaked goals significantly in the promotion season and ended up well ahead of the rest.  The issue has been for quite a while the lack of goals. Get that right and we are back on track.

I'm only addressing @lake district canary for this as he is sounding super hopeful and positive and have said we don't need extra cover - but I do want you to know chap alot of your posts I like and I'm not chasing you down with a pitch fork here but...

Don't you just think it's a sad reflection that we are going into season (an especially crammed one as it stands at present) with not only a defence that you can't disagree has got weaker with the loss of Godfrey and Lewis, but also one thin in numbers. Partner this with what's been said above, we have Bali Mumba who is unknown at this level, bryam who is sadly injured and properly a crock, likewise Hanley, Gibson who's not had many games in two year and zimbo whos hopefully over his injuries. Aarons is obviously one of best.

But cover is short. We haven't addressed and last year highlighted it big time and yet we are set to go again with the same issue and same square peg round answer of tettey. A man three years ago who couldn't play twice in a week - fair enough he has had a mini Renaissance but still.

So now we have just got to hope our attack is back in form, with another older and slower and some unproven talents at this level.

This is suppose to be the year that we do get prompted according to the big plan. If last year was a year early then this is the year, what a prime time, alot of rivals haven't spent big because of covid. We have parachute payments and we haven't lost all the crown Jewells.

But - and this isn't lakeys fault, he is simply putting a positive spin on it, we are reduced to just hoping that we are good enough, rather than doing all things possible to be in the strongest position to be promoted. Which is surely the point of every team every season in this league and what matches Delia's great X year plan.

If they went on dragons den and set it out, and said well ignore the flaws from last year, we will just hope the attack sorts it out, would they not be laughed at.

Edit. No idea why I have the dragons den reference. But still, you get what I'm trying to say I hope.

Got to say I think you've got this the wrong way round.

Yes we got promoted leaking goals but that was pretty exceptional. We scored 92 goals, meaning only Bournemouth have outscored us in the last decade, building a plan around that happening again would be deeply unwise.

Two fit CB's for tomorrow one of whom has played just a single game since January 2019, the other who has not played this season and been injured more often than not for well over a year now plus no natural cover at LB and i suggest you might want to reconsider that statement Lakey.

Also, one injury could potentially mean an extended period of Stiepermann, Rupp or Mumba at left back. Worrying.

There’s never much cash available under this regime.

Literally every view he shares is through the yellow and green goggles he wears

If we don't even bring in a CB on loan in the next 90 minutes massive questions need to be asked of Webber. We were already weak at the back so to lose Godfrey, Klose and Famewo (until Jan) and only bringing in someone who's barely played for 2 years is going to look even more ridiculous now with Zimmermann getting (yet another) injury.

We have three first class central defenders and in our promotion season we only had three quality centre backs - and a young lad called Godfrey who hadn't yet proved himself at CB.

Quintilla, Tettey, Sorensen can all CB if needed and we have versatility in droves around the squad for people to play right back or left back too.

So although it would be good to have an extra CB and a left back, it is not desperate, which is what the op said, after all.  Any talk of "desperate" or "must have" is all a bit ott when we have the quality in the squad that we have.

And - this is not positive spin as @NeymarSmith suggests. It is all plain fact. If we have injuries we have enough to cope - these would not be "round pegs in square holes" - these would be good professional and versatile footballers doing the job asked of them.

Just remind me of how many club records Farke has broken using the reasoning you've highlighted.

How many goals have we scored & conceded this year?

And if we ignore the relegation, how are we doing now after the first four games of the season?

We will. I'm still betting Hanley will get crocked after 20mins, so we'll be even thinner in the defence

No cash yet somehow Swansea manage to sign Ryan Bennett and Joel Latibeaudiere today. Seasons hopes gone already.

I'd be quite surprised to think that just one game could change your opinion one way or the other.

Surely you give careful thought to these things and wouldn't be easily swayed from your reasoned opinion just by one games result?

Would either of those players be willing to come here to be behind Zimbo and Gibson? We weren't in the market for a first choice CB, we were looking for a Klose replacement to be third/fourth choice

It's the simple principle of signing players BETTER than those already at the club.

You may make fewer signings but the first team is improved.
