So 50 million plus in the pot

Recommended Posts

Where would you spend the cash to strengthen the squad?

Dowell and Byram injured, and a injury prone CBs.

I'd like to see us get a CB, AM and a flexible LB/RB come in

Cheer up! I don't think we will splash the cash but we need to bring in some replacements

Need to sign another non injury prone CB with good Championship/PL experience. To sign Gibson on a permanent deal we have to get promoted, Hanley, Klose and Zimbo all injury prone

We won't sign anyone else regardless of how many more leave, this was always the plan, make the club self funding so Delia doesn't have to sell, the league we're actually in is irrelevant. Expect a rinse and repeat with the likes of Idah, Martin etc in a couple of seasons. Nothing will change under her stewardship.

Well if they think they are going to get 20 million for those then we will have to either be in the premier league or at the top of the champs.

It cuts both ways if they sell all the best current players and bag the cash then pull it off on a shoestring = genius.  If not and they pocket the cash and we drift to mid table mediocrity then the success of the past will be a deemed a fluke/good fortune.

We won't spend much of it.

Why would we when the World is full of cheap players who are past it, cheap players with injury problems, cheap players in the German 3rd Division and cheap young players who we can loan out so that someone else pays their wages.

As long as we replace these players with more decent prospects then I'll be happy.

I hear a lot of moaning about these players going but we all know they would. As soon as Lewis went they were looking at the grass on the other side of the fence

Anyway, back to the original point, who do you wanna see signed? What prospect can be found in the champs and lower?

Why are we equating transfer fee to quality? If that's the case then Naismith at £8m should have been a far better player for us than Buendia. Oliviera should have banged in 50 goals a season if Pukki scored 30 and was a free.

The other point is that selling Godfrey and Lewis for £40 million, doesn't mean you have that as cash. The fees may well be structured over a couple of seasons, the players I think will get a cut and in Godfrey's case, 10% is due to Torquay.

That said, reinvestment will be needed especially if Cantwell and Buendia leave l. Sundays match gave a real insight of how badly lacking we would be creatively in the central areas. As others have said and although having 5 centre backs is crazy, we do need another because it's hard to see Zimbo, Klose and Hanley avoiding injuries.

You seem to be forgetting the players we brought in at the start of the window. Far more have joined than left at the moment.

We also need to consider Corporation Tax. We did have some losses to bring forward which hopefully covers the sales so far but any future sales will attract 20% tax

Agreed. Lewis' replacement was already here before he was sold as is Godfrey's. The worry is the injury rate of the remaining CBs beyond Gibson.

As Sean said, the payments will be structured over a couple of seasons, so we won't have 50 million sitting in the bank. It is more than likely that this is the case, as Webber will (sensibly) want to secure the club's financial status for the next few seasons.

We have also invested in 11 players. Some of that money may have already been used.

The financial outlook is now uncertain again, with supporters being kept away for an extended period of time.

So, what are the options?

- Develop the stadium? A possibility, considering now would be the ideal time to do it.

- Continue to invest more in Colney. I doubt it needs more investment, for now.

- Expand the scouting network, data analytics and sports science part of the club?

- Invest in the team?

GK: Krul, McGovern, Barden

RB: Aarons?, Byram, Mumba, (Rupp)

LB: Quintilla (Gibson, Onel/Placheta as wing backs)

CB: Zimmerman, Gibson, Hanley, Klose

CM: Skipp, Tettey, McLean, Sorensen, Rupp, (Vrancic)

RW: Buendia?, Martin, (Rupp)

LW: Onel, Placheta, Cantwell?

ACM: Dowell, Stiepermann, Vrancic

ST: Pukki, Hugill, Idah

If we are going on numbers, you would say that we need a right winger if Buendia leaves, a left back to cover Quintilla and a right back on loan if Aarons leaves, whilst Byram recovers.

If we are going on quality... centre mid? attacking midfield? I honestly think the squad needs time to settle and DF needs time to reimplement our attacking brand of football.

Unless we invest in a special talent, maybe like Dennis Man, then I'm not sure that we need to spend that much.

20201002_071730.jpg.81d5b6004c6871f23e8a824228f230bc.jpgYou have very short memories. In our promotion season we made a loss of £35m. We budgeted for a profit of around £25m last season which would have gone a long way to clearing that debt. The £25m planned profit will be significantly reduced because of Covid.
