Sky Sports are reporting the fee as £20m. Is that really right?

can't be as we have officially confirmed its a club record fee. Widely reported elsewhere as £25m +£5m add ons and sell on clause

Sky sports know Jack Sh*t. They spent the whole of one transfer deadline day inflating the fee we were paying for Gary Hooper until it was £9 million. We didn't sign him that day anyway, but brought him six months later for £3 million.

Good move for him. I wish him all the best and look forward to seeing him prosper in the PL.

But what’s his best position? 😀🤔

Pretty much confirms what I thought.

So, now officially confirmed. Good luck Ben, moving to Everton at this time looks like a very good move.

The last Centre Back we sold to Everton did ok!

Pleased for Ben.  Played the first 3 games of the season with full commitment and a great attitude.  Hopefully playing in the PL with a team high in confidence and with good players around him will see him fulfil his undoubted potential.

Dave Watson - signed by us for £50,000 from Liverpool and sold to Everton for £900,000 six years later.

Ben Godfrey - told he wasn't good enough by Leeds at the age of 14 - signed by us from York for a fee that eventually reached £1 million and sold by us to Everton for £25 million four years later.

Quite a boost for team in National League North to receive the sell on fee they are getting.

Yes - good for them - and actually good for us too in the long run - we can point to the money York eventually got when trying to prise other gems away from lower league clubs.

That's how the system should work. A good deal all round and more importantly a fair deal.

Good luck to Ben, handled the interest in him like a professional and now has his big move. A great time to sign for Everton with Ancelotti at the helm and having a great start to the season. I wish him well.

Sky say the fee was ‘much less than Norwich reporting around £20m’.    Trust that is not correct.

If it was, that would represent a gross dereliction of duty!    He is worth a lot more than £25m to us.    It’s been a very disappointing few weeks...... about time we had some good news!!!!

Norwich haven't reported a fee at all, it's our usual "undisclosed". Sky talking ****.

Seen a few different versions.

Sky say £20m, twitter reporters say £25m, another one said £20m plus a guaranteed £5m that would be seen quickly.

Good luck Ben.

Not often a deal is good for so many but in my opinion it’s great for for him, Everton get a possible future England captain, with work still in progress, we get a substantial fee after developing a young player that has a little further to go to become the finished product and York now probably have any financial fears they had over the next few months eradicated.
In addition we have Ben Gibson now who will probably ( but who knows ) never become good enough to be England captain, but maybe just what we need to be able to defend better.

A sad day, moreso if only a pathetic £20m.

Good luck to him, he's a top lad and it's definitely the right time to leave from his perspective.

Has a hell of a bright future ahead of him I think- Much more of a Maddison than a Leiws he is

sounds like we've had our pants pulled down compared to the £50m we wanted initially... yet again the self funding thing comes back to bite us. Just what the plan is long term I don't even know anymore... at least we will have a club to support though, until we have a backer though, we are going to be ultimately short of achieving anything significant.

You don't think we put a £50m price tag on him to drive the price up, knowing there was a lot of interest?

Ironic that we were such a weak team defensively last year yet we've now sold 2 defenders to Prem teams and Max has had interest from Barcelona.

The difference between "the model" now & back in the 90s (or indeed to the situation when we sold Maddison) is that we don't need to sell any players now to balance the books, whereas back then it was how the club was financed.  Realistically, Ben will have ambitions to play at top level, and going to Everton is really impressive at his age - most of the players we've sold in the past few years have gone to lower Prem teams or sometimes to yoyo teams.

What's always impressed me so much about Ben is his pace and ability to play creative passes.  That youtube video showing him making up ground along the length of the pitch to stop a goalscoring opportunity is just amazing.  WIth top defensive coaching, he can become a really good CB.

I don't buy the "we don't need to sell players" line one bit. The contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on. Player power will always force through these deals for less than an ideal amount of money to bigger, more ambitious clubs.

who knows, seems odd that we were compelled to claim it was a record fee when in reality it is £20m... we are getting left behind and fast
