Didn’t realise the vaccine was a battle against Europe, bit naughty that, however his comments were very clever used the word Europe. If he wants to make it confrontational why not mention the world, where several countries are miles ahead. Also a bit misleading as going by figures I have seen we managed 43,000 a day over 19 days Germany managed 50,000 a day over their first 4 days. I really don’t know why he is making it a country thing, get it done you will be loved by everyone, say as soon as we can we will help the rest of the world, you will be loved by the rest of the world and a world leader.

  • described the UK's vaccine roll out as better so far than "the rest of Europe put together" and offering people "life and hope"

Only one country is ahead of the UK at the moment and that is Bahrain who have administered doses to 3.62%  of the population. We are next with doses administered to 1.39% of the population (as at 27th December, so in reality will be much higher than that), while Germany lags behind with doses administered to 0.32% of the population

So we have administered more than 400% more doses by population than Germany.

Furthermore, Germany has a supplies problem as reported in  today's Telegraph and caused by the bumbling Angela Merkel:

Angela Merkel 'blocked bid to secure more coronavirus vaccine'

German chancellor forced health ministers to hand over control to the European Commission last summer

ByJustin Huggler BERLIN and Sam Morgan BRUSSELS4 January 2021 • 4:33pm

Angela Merkel blocked an initiative by her health minister Jens Spahn to order more vaccine.

Angela Merkel came under fire on Monday after it emerged she intervened personally to block a bid by European health ministers to secure larger orders of coronavirus vaccine over the summer.

Public anger is growing across the continent at the European Union’s failure to order enough doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine which was developed in Germany and manufactured in Belgium.

But it now appears Mrs Merkel blocked an initiative by the German, French, Italian and Dutch health ministers to order more stocks of  vaccine last summer.

Bild newspaper published a leaked letter from the four health ministers to Ursula von der Leyen in which they agreed to drop the initiative and hand over control of vaccine orders to the European Commission.

According to the newspaper, the letter was written under pressure from Mrs Merkel, who wanted to send a signal of solidarity at the start of Germany’s six-month EU presidency.

“We believe that it is of utmost importance to have a common joint and single approach towards the various pharmaceutical companies,” the four ministers wrote.

“We also consider that speed is of the essence in this case. So we deem it very useful if the Commission takes the lead in this process.”

In fact, Europe began to fall behind in the race to secure sufficient stocks after the Commission took over.

The four ministers had already negotiated an order for 400m doses of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine, but the Commission became locked in protracted negotiations as the UK and US secured large orders.

I'm replying to WBB where he mentions Germany's performance. So why are you not asking WBB what is it with him and the Germans?

What an absolute load of tosh Israel, China, Russia, Uraguay and your mates in America have done 4.6 million. Johnson used the words most, not % of population. We going to mention India who are supplying vaccine to 60 % of the world and have 50 million ready to go next week. They will be manufacturing 2 billion doses by July for the world. Why are you using this to bash Europe. I feel really bad I have brought up the rest of the world as we are in this together. When you say they haven’t approved AstraZeneca you forget to say that we have done emergency approval they are going for conditional marketing authorisation. I didn’t bring up Europe to bash, Johnson even tonight had to use an address to the nation to make the vaccine about Europe and how Europe is not doing well. As you keep saying, what’s Europe got to do with him, didn’t we leave it ?. If we are doing that much better then as friends surely he can speak to them and say ‘ we found this worked well ‘ or ‘ this didn’t work for us because ‘.

This is the world not one country it’s about every country. Without every country being vaccinated it’s a waste of time vaccinating just your own country. He shew tonight how his misleading information is endless. 2 days ago he insisted everyone up to group 6 would be vaccinated by April. By tonight that had been reduced to by February 1 dose for up to group 4. Then we finished up with Hancock having a melt down because he was asked when we will get to 2 million a week vaccinated, he said, aggressively that they have never said that. Try listening to The Andrew Marr show Matt, your boss was telling us 10’s of millions will be vaccinated by March.
Our achievements in the U.K. to date are absolutely stunning based on where the suppliers said we would be. Our achievements on Johnson’s claims however mean we are 6 1/2 million vaccinations behind and we now need to vaccinate at 2.4 million doses a week to meet what he promised.
This government like most governments around the world do not have the strengths to do it themselves, as your mate Trump is finding out, like us they have doses sitting in the freezers and not in arms. America are relying on private hospitals and like us they made promises based on fantasy a 100 million vaccinations by 4 days ago, was never going to happen. It is a job for the military and NHS.

Like I said we are doing an amazing job but Johnson for whatever reason is saying we are doing a rubbish job, by trying off the cuff comments. I prefer to say every nation is doing an amazing job. Some of these countries have only been vaccinating 4 days when the last lot of figures came out.

A few weeks ago Jools and a few of his mates were commenting on a Guardian report and claiming our hospitals were empty and our nurses were standing around doing nothing. Now that’s real misinformation, hope you slated him for that.

Until Johnson started giving out his misleading information I knew of nobody that was not planning to take it. Very few believe him anymore which is resulting in people thinking about it.
So to sum up yep we are doing a great job and Johnson should be taking some credit, but he keeps saying things, especially about other countries that are just trying to make him look good. He just needs to give us facts, and if he wants something to shout about, how about Covax ? He is one of the great supporters and funders which makes it even stranger when he is bashing other countries. Get on with your job, get everybody vaccinated and if we could have sight of the the invisible man, the secretary for vaccines that would be great.

Just to add, he could also have said deaths and positives in the over 80’s are already beginning to drop as the number taking the vaccine in these groups increase, but Europe bashing was far more important.

Spot on WBB. He's so desperate to find a positive Brexit story he'll stoop this low in an attempt to exploit the virus for personal political gain. As the scientific authorities have consistently pointed out, leaving the EU has NOTHING at all to do with our development of a vaccine or with the roll out of the immunisation process.

A very apt quote Herman. How appropriate that it was another much more clever Johnson (Samuel) that quipped "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel". Often mistaken as a criticism of patriotism, it is of course a criticism of those who attempt to subvert genuine love of country by parading jingoistic nationalism as patriotism. Another quote from Johnson (Samuel) also seems particular apt in describing his modern namesake:

"Sir, I do not say that he is not honest; but we have no reason to conclude from his political conduct that he is honest"

The only difference is that he had an expensive education.

By all accounts he had a very similar attitude to that education nonetheless.

Sorry but if you are going to make a comparison between countries performance then looking at the absolute number of jabs doesn't tell you anything. It is obvious that not only will a large country be jabbing in greater numbers but there will be a bigger infrastructure in place to do the jabbbing. Comparing China with San Marino is ridiculous on absolute numbers. But comparing the % of the population receiving a dose gives a much better comparison indicator. On that basis we are second best behind Bahrain with known published figures.

And a socialist is a scoundrel without patriotism.

He, like Moy, is obsessed what others are doing. It is not important whether we are first or last as long as we do it clinically and efficiently.
