The NYT view

Boris Johnson’s style on the world stage.

Boris Johnson’s attention-grabbing U.S. visit

Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, made headlines this week while visiting the U.S., variously telling the world to grow up and accept the challenge of climate change; making fun of France’s neuralgic response to a U.S.-Australia-Britain submarine deal; and even clearing up lingering confusion about how many children he has (six).

A journalist-turned-politician, Johnson has long employed humor, often at his own expense, to make serious points. But it is unclear how well that lighthearted style advances Britain’s post-Brexit position on the global stage. “The problem with being a comedy act is that you’re then not taken seriously,” one British observer said. “That’s why we weren’t consulted on Afghanistan.”

Britain has yet to make progress on a trade deal with the U.S., one of the main selling points of Brexit. President Biden has also made it clear that he would object to any British actions that threaten the peace in Northern Ireland, such as its vows to overhaul its post-Brexit trading arrangements there.

Total clown who cannot turn up to appointments on time, lies time and time again, is a posh Eaton **** who only cares about himself, his dumbo of a wife and fellow Eaton lot and never the general public.

John Major only cared about Cricket, this embarrassment only cares about Rugby on days he’s supposed to address us on important things. He’s always turned up late to briefings whenever England are playing a rugby match.

I still remember it now and won’t ever forget it when we went into lockdown in November last year; he was supposed to address us at 17:00, but was late by one hour and thirty mins. Just how unprofessional can you get!!?, at least Norwich turn up for matches and training on time!!. Then just after the newsreader said “Here they come”, Boris’s first line really got on my nerves….. “Many apologies for interrupting your evening” he said as soon as him and bubblehead Whitty and this other guy arrived at their lecterns. How about saying “Time to ruin your lives and cancel Christmas?”.

The guy is a bumbling dolt and how anyone can say “Loveable buffoon” and “He’s funny” as acceptable reasons to have him in power needs a serious long look in the mirror. His boasting and jingoism before the Olympics, put me off him from the start. He even helped a friend of his get someone beat up, the tapes are on YouTube, but all that gets put aside and nicely swept under the Tory carpet.

Just like Letterbox Mr RTB. Scumbag means despicable person so it is appropriate.

I love Angela. Proper Socialist. Not daft left. Care worker, trade unionist. Told JC a few home truths.

In his recent climate-change speech he talked about humanity but could just as easily have been describing himself:

“We believe that someone else will clear up the mess we make, because that is what someone else has always done. We trash our habitats again and again with the inductive reasoning that we have got away with it so far, and therefore we will get away with it again.''

Indeed PC. The words that keep coming into my mind are his beseeching of leaders at the climate conference...."it is time for humanity to grow up" with his accent on those last two words, like a scolding parent. This, from someone you could argue uses ridiculously overworked Latin phrases and shoe-horns them into jokes.

Time he "grew up" from being a Puer Aeternus and actually got serious with the NHS, the plight of refugees crossing the channel each day, the behaviour of some of his own cabinet, on a proper social care plan, on driver shortages, on Northern Ireland and the disintegrating union. For a start. Then, perhaps something more solid on universal credit, child poverty and increasing regional inequality.

Talking like a concerned parent belies the real person he is. Narcissistic and needy of attention. Stanley Johnson has a lot to answer for.

Wrote this on Facebook earlier and had a lot of agreements so far…..

The pandemic hit the fan in March, we had 9 months of transition left.

We were offered another year because of the pandemic to allow us to transition more smoothly. The toffs party turned it down, during a pandemic. I’ll repeat that. During a pandemic they decided to inflict more damage on a UK industry that was already struggling with the pandemic and unable to focus on Brexit.

You could say they decided to not take that extra year and that's so they can blame stuff like this on the pandemic. They got very lucky with Covid as a lot of people will use this an an excuse for a lot of stuff.

Maggie had the Falklands to hide behind, while Boris had this ‘demic.

You only joined yesterday but you have some very colourful anecdotes to share with us. You're definitely going to be an asset to the messageboard. Welcome.

And I know what you mean about the Eaton lot. I was in the Red Lion, Eaton and had a very delicious meal there. You couldn't make it up!

How often does the £2.5M new press briefing room get used? Only to announce a £.50 trade deal with the Solomon Islands?

We are missing out on the metaphors Boris. As our great leader said "Where are you? Lets be 'avin you".

Oh I see, no Government Minister is allowed to talk about the fuel crisis. Its nothing to do with them. They didn't cause it. They couldn't have done. They didn't even think about it. Let alone the select committee that told them 15 months ago this would happen.

Surely there are a few clever Etonians who can be spared for 3 months to drive the full but driverless tankers?

We need SKS to forget the lectern today and rip the bowels out of this shoddy, sleazy, scum sucking bunch of liars and tell us that the UK will return to working properly under a proper Labour Government.

People ask why Labour always eats itself from the inside? Its because their supporters will tell their failures and liars like Blair its time to go.

Try getting a Tory to blame his own party. Its like rocking horse siht.

I fully agree with most of this KG especially that SKS needs to "rip the bowels out of this shoddy, sleazy, scum sucking bunch of liars and tell us that the UK will return to working properly under a proper Labour Government." (or any competent government). You and Labour do need to move on from Blair though. That's almost a generation ago.

That said I have a small admission to make. One of my friends was actually a Tory candidate MP. They tried to persuade me at the time a few years back with May still as leader not to worry about Johnson - they hadn't any confidence in him either and assumed he was just a joke act that they'd sensibly all put back in his box!

Hemingway sort of said that when people go bankrupt it happens slowly and then very suddenly. That is how it will be with Johnson.

That was implied in my puer aeternus reference Purple (Jung source but Marie-Louise Von Franz wrote a brilliant book on the type). Such types fly and fly then come down to earth almost when least expected. Lots of people are duped or charmed by the puer (look at the mainstream press and their fascination...even his name "Boris").

Some 'Real Politik'.

The only people that 'hate' Blair are the left. Yes he made a bad mistake (not deliberate) in Iraq but had lots of forgotten military/humanitarian successes in the Balkans, Sierra-Leonne and similar. He also implemented many Labour policies notably a renewal of the NHS. Clearly the most successful Labour politician to date bar none.

What he did know was how to win elections against the Tories which could be summed as in 'Don't scare the horses." His language was moderate but centre left - no student antics or 'scum' words which although they may attract the unthinking left repel the floating (currently Tory) voter. Rayner needs to be told to STFU as I'm sure she has from using such language. She might as well of said vote Tory if in doubt to the voters Labour needs.

Johnson's support I'm sure is brittle - even in the Tory party as I alluded too (many will eventually say they were only following orders) as Johnson is personally all the things Rayner suggests - without a shred of a moral compass. Give the average thinking Tory voter a way out of Johnsons growing chaos and SKS will win through.

Agree with that! Would I love a more radical left-wing Labour government? Absolutely! Do I think a more radical left-wing Labour party would win the next election? Absolutely not! The northern "red wall" seats didn't vote Tory because they wanted a more radical far left-wing Labour Party. Labour wins when it occupies the centre-left ground and demonstrates a competent grasp of the key issues of Health, economy, and education (we can add the environmental crisis to the key list this time round). Criticisms can certainly be levelled at Blair and Brown, but we should not forget that the power they achieved for the Labour Party resulted in record levels of investment in Health, education, and a record number of people taken out of poverty. Concentrate on that agenda and the corrupt, incompetent Johnson and his motley crew will be exposed for the self-serving fraudsters that they are. Demonstrations of far-left Ideological purity may get conference goers off their seats, what it doesn't get is Xs in the the ballot box. Fundamentally, the Labour Party exists to serve the working people it was formed to rerpresent; when it is widely perceived to be more interested in serving the ideological interests of Party members (and ideological infiltrators) then it not only loses its raison d'etre, it also loses the votes it needs to gain the political power required to further the causes of ordinary people.

February 2016...The Daily Herald four month before the Referendum a columnist wrote about the tactics of the Remain side calling them 'the agents of project fear'.

'if we vote to Remain' he said', we will continue to sit trapped like passengers in the back seat of some errant minicab with a driver who cannot speak English and who is taking us remorselessly and expensively in the wrong direction'. Boris Johnson.

This was because the Remain camp warned about shortages of jobs that rely on foreign labour, such as driving minicabs, and it has been accurate.

Queues at petrol stations, this country was short of 30.000 HGV drivers before we left the EU, empty shelves at supermarkets. the hospitality industry struggling to find staff, all this has come about.

To label the remain campaign 'project fear' was lazy and disingenuous, designed to stifle mature debate.

Quite right (no reactions left). EU nationals numbered 3.57m in 2016 at the time of the referendum and this fell by 200,000  by the end of 2020. 92,000 left in the hospitality sector alone. Interestingly, the number of non-EU nationals has remained around 2.6m. I wonder why that is? The pandemic? To hell it is, it's due to Brexit.

Shop on the bike today. Back with two bags on the handlebars (like panniers) to keep me balanced. A string of onions round my neck.

Sorted.
