It's caused by making policy up on the hoof without the smarts to think it fully through first. It always been her weakness - another good example was at first saying Britons could go to fight in Ukraine. Simply a disaster waiting to happen (again).

Whatever you think about Rishi I don't think he makes these basic incompetent errors.

Trouble is the Tory electorate aren't too smart either. It all faith and Brexit / Johnson worship. Many still can't understand why Johnson just had to go - ethics.

Another type of Johnson behaviour - the U Turn.

I agree that she must have come up with an idea that had rested in the back of her mind and blurted it out...to a receptive southern audience. But...the thing is, this person is odds on to be the next PM. She ought not be expressing stupid and ill- thought comments such as this.

It is so obviously anti-northern and I'm not surprised Northern Tories are kicking off.

Used to make some great model aircraft kits of British classics...next Tory policy, compulsary modelling of Spitfires and Hurricanes in all schools. 🤣

The plan was contained in Ms Truss’s policy to save £11 billion by cutting Civil Service time off, scrapping jobs aimed at increasing inclusion and diversity in the public sector, and by ending national pay deals.

Boys climbing up chimneys, match girls, fish wives and hand ploughing all to be encouraged and the going rate will be a quart of cider and two starlings.

YouGov has her on 60% and it also has the tories 1 point behind Labour. Are they credible any more?

I think the YouGov poll was before the U turn on public sector pay, maybe even before the initial blurting out of the nonsense. I don’t trust any of them to be honest, I’m more influenced by John Curtice view.

Yep, not only the U turn but then blaming the press for misrepresentation, nothing seems to be changing.

She is the puppet of the same people that pulled Johnson’s strings so nothing will change.

Curtice seems to be putting a level of reliance on the YouGov poll this morning indicating Truss has a decent lead, so there you go.

Yes, that's a fair summary. Same style. Almost a non serious politician. Another one. Hence her popularity with that tiny selectorate who will vote her in (1.13 on Betfair as we speak...even your £100 would get you your 13% return).

Rafael Behr has written a thought provoking post this morning about how she may be the same but also where she might be different to Johnson. As ever, some interesting comments at the bottom of the article (folk who have reflected more).

It's going to be another depressing period for sure. I don't believe I'm being especiay prescient in saying I believe social unrest is round the corner. And if it is, she won't have much gravitas or authority in being the kind of leader needed.

These last few years have been characterised by a pound shop government. And the nation still likes pound shops.

Perhaps time to hibernate and only occasionally emerge to ask if it's all over yet?

I see 700 people boarded boats crossing the Channel yesterday (Sky News). So the Rwanda policy is clearly working well at deterring people from risking their lives to make it to British shores. The £120m the government has spent on securing 200 places in Rwanda for boat people doesn't even cover one third of that single day's attempted crossings. Nothing more needs to be said really, does it!

The next year or two is going to be crash and burn with any government but most certainly this one.

All we can hope is that something more positive arises from the ashes.

“Liz herself made it clear yesterday that she is not taking this policy forward.”- Brandon Pinnochio Lewis

So why did she bring it up in a Press Release?

How depressing was it to see Brandon Lewis wheeled out for the morning news yet again to defend the lies of the (next) Tory Party leader. Absolutely nothing has changed or will change when the playschool Maggie Thatcher takes over the reins.

He's bound to be wrong at least once in his career. Hopefully.

Just watched the appalling Suella Braverman gush her support for Truss on Sky News. Does anyone on this site know anything about the law with regard to provocation? I need to know whether it is possible to sue her for the cost of a new TV.

Good grief, it’s like The Independent comments section on here, full of vitriolic lefties spouting bile about the evil Tories.

Good grief! It's like the Daily Fail on here, Right-wing gammons bursting yet more blood vessels complaining about people exercising their right to freedom of speech.

Because the current Tory lot really are all as thick as pig ****. They will say anything to win a few votes.

Hopefully Truss has already lost the next election by saying she will introduce regional pay agreements. Anyone who works for any Government body, NHS, police, Fire, teachers or council would be mental to vote for her. She has her sights on reducing your pay packet so she can give tax cuts to her wealthy backers.

You would love it.

Why?  Is it aimed at non-partisan floating voters from the centre ground of politics?

Another well-reasoned and even-handed argument 😂

Personally I find the Telegraph, Guardian, and Independent cover most things so I don’t really feel the need to dip into the tabloids.

Yeah! Don't think you would like that. Might just precipitate a heart attack.

Can't bealive we are such a racist, horrible, nasty terrible country to live in yet almost a thousand a day are happy to risk their lives to come live here. Strange that 😉
