McCallum back to Coventry

Some defensive players can play some defensive positions.

Nothing I've seen of Klose lately indicates he'd be anything other than a liability at left back. Injuries have taken their toll and he just doesn't seem as mobile anymore and that is hugely important at fullback. I'd probably have him 6th choice for the position at best.

6 choices for left back can't be bad.

I would say that the most important ability for all the back 4 is to defend. We like Aarons going forward and Quintilla can put in a good cross, I would prefer full backs who can defend set pieces as our defensive midfield can be clumsy.

Perhaps 3 centre backs with wing backs is the answer.

Yeah it is important to be able to defend but you have to think who you'll be matched up against. Timm Klose up against a speedy winger who will be running at him or an overlapping fullback isn't a good situation.

I'm not certain we need another left back but saying he's 6th choice doesn't mean I think we've got 5 great options ahead of him- just I think he'd be really, really bad in that position.

McCallum on the bench for Coventry again tonight. He was on the bench for them last week and didn't come on.

Damn son!

Sorry?

My apologies, I'll elaborate....

That is unfortunate as we loaned a player out to get more game time and he's not getting any.

On a semi-related note, that was a very nice from Bournemouth there. Shades of Norwich 2018-19.

Bournemouth looking good early on.

The McCallum situation is very strange.

Cheers, yes, see it now.

More to the point; we don't think he's good enough to start, Coventry don't think he's good enough to start, yet in 12 months time according to some on here he will be our first choice left back?

If he's going to sit on Coventry's bench, he may as well sit on ours. Still not quite sure I follow letting him go.

They obviously don't think he's close to being our first team quality so might as well help the finances by loaning him out.

Things can change very quickly in football and McCallum is still young. It may do him no harm to have to dig in to get his place back at Coventry.

And most on here (and I include myself in this) didn't know that Max Aarons was good enough to be our first choice right back precisely 12 minutes before he made his debut for us.

Off on a slight tangent, but I don’t see any sign of Danjumba (sp?) who scored against us last week. Not in squad and not listed as injured. Maybe on his way?

Edit: mentioned elsewhere he has a “minor calf injury”. I still hope he’s leaving!

He was very impressive against us last week.

Regarding McCallum, maybe he's been loaned out, and not even getting into Coventry side is because he's not as good as we thought?

Looking like another dodgy Webber window? When's he ****ing off?

When are you ****ing  off??

It seems curious that we've loaned out our only specialist left back cover only for him to be left back cover elsewhere. I doubt that was the plan.

I went on the Coventry forum to have a read after they signed him, and they were all a bit confused that we'd loan him to them as they all felt he'd be behind Giles (Wolves loanee).

Looks like they are right.

They play wing backs rather than full backs.

It really does look like we've just decided he isn't actually good enough, but if that's the case surely we'd be shopping for another left back?

I honestly get so confused by some of our actions. Is it too much to ask that we have cover in every position? Did we not learn from last season?

I posted up a week ago that a friend of mine who knows somebody at the club said that they really like Bali Mumba. Farke said recently that they see Mumba as a left-back option. The fact that he's right footed presumably doesn't worry them too much as they were quite content to play the right-footed Byram at left-back in the Premier League and he did pretty well there. (and way back in the mists of time a certain right footed Mark Bowen played 399 games at left-back for us).

It's just too early in the season to be jumping to conclusions about any of these things -we'll see over the coming weeks.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter.

Even if we deemed him not ready, I'm surprised that we'd loan him out before getting a replacement in. Surely McCallum is better than trying to shoehorn Gibson or Stiepermann into the left back spot, should Quintilla get injured?

And if we've loaned him out and have decided not to sign a replacement, it would be an insane decision.

If Mumba is left back cover, then who is right back cover, assuming Byram is out for an extended period of time? Or is Mumba cover for both sides now?

If so, three players for two positions is very light. Four centre backs for two positions wasn't even enough last season- although admittedly that was due to awful luck more than anything.

Honest answer is I don't know - we'll just have to wait and see. But Stiepermann played his first six months for us at left back and Farke publicly said when we brought Rupp that he provided extra cover in the full-back positions.

Just like how Amadou and Tettey could cover at centre back.

McCallum came on for the last 5 minutes of tonight's game. Sky quoted him as having said that rejoining Coventry was like going home.

What on earth happened when he was here?
