McCallum back to Coventry

Recommended Posts

The point surely here is that for the club to sanction a move, Webber / Farke clearly believe they have enough cover in that position - only time will tell if it's the right move or not. In a perfect world Quintilla stays fit, McCallum has a good season and comes back to us a better player.

But since we were clearly not obligated to loan him out, it suggests those with the player knowledge at the club feel they are covered enough and perhaps this is better than having an unhappy, non-playing McCallum around?

This is one of two possible explanations, but I really hope it isn't the one. As I and others have mentioned, we now have only one left back in the squad and four or five others we're speculating about, saying that "well, if push comes to shove, Player X can do a job in an emergency".

The other explanation, which I really hope is the case, is simply that Farke and his staff have decided that McCallum isn't quite ready to provide adequate cover so we need to bring in a more 'ready made' option to cover at left back, which in turn means that McCallum is loaned out for experience. This would still leave us with two specialists to compete for the shirt, which is an absolute necessity with two games a week for pretty much the entire season.

In truth I was basing it off assumption and what I read with regards to Coventry fans opinions of him after he signed, not of evidence really. Certainly didn't think he would be like for like it terms of immediate quality, but sort go thought it would be like Lewis coming in when he first broke onto the scene.

Ah fair play. Sorry didn't wish to sound like I was biting your head off.

I suppose a young player has come in from a strong full debut season in L1 so why not give him a try.

What do we think of quintella at present?

I guess, I'm not sure who's about on the market or whether there is anyone better than McCallum willing to come be second choice for us, but as you say, entirely possible.

This is what I would hope too, but word from Michael Bailey seems to indicate otherwise. But he did also say that Buendia was happy to stay before that voluntary interview came out without the club knowing about it, so here's hoping...

Me neither, but Webber has a habit of announcing names that none of us even thought of.

The fact that McCallum was let go before a replacement was brought in adds weight to the theory, unfortunately.

I hope it isn't the case but fear it may well be...

Gibson at left back? I mean, I can see Aarons and Mumba there but Gibson? nahhh pull the other one

I'm gonna be bold and say that IF Michael Bailey's comment is accurate, actual football coaches who have seen him in close quarters probably know his ability better than you.

Crazy, I know.

Max Aarons is a perfectly good option at left back (his first game for Norwich was at left back). Full back is a specialist position, whether that is at left back or right back then doesn't really matter a huge amount in terms of knowing the position. It is generally preferable to have a left footer at left back and vice versa, but Max is good enough with his left foot to be comfortable on either side - he certainly isn't afraid to have a shot with his left as he showed at the weekend.

If Norwich sell Max then it is pretty certain a new wing back comes in - it might be that the club decide to get a left back rather than a right back.

If Placheta plays left wing, it may even be preferable to have a right footed player at left back - there were a number of times that Quintilla and Placheta were both trying to go along the left touchline and were crowding each other out a little, have a right footed wingback who is happy to go on the inside of Placheta could work out well.  Leicester used James Justin as a right footed left back against Burnley and he had an excellent game.

I hate the idea of your first choice back up in one position being your starter in another. If Quintilla gets injured and we shift Max to left back it then means bringing in a reserve right back and just messing up defensive continuity.

Then just put Mumba at right left back.

The fact Byram was played mostly at left back shows that Farke doesn't seem too adverse to a right footed left back.

I think he's better at left right back myself.

Klose can play left back evidently.

Shame about McCallum, can't imagine he's too pleased, that's a season and a half loaned back to his former club, must be great for them to have the money and the player.

Also they have already loaned in another player in his position so he is not guaranteed to start every game - makes you wonder if we are paying some of his wages. Coventry fans think it's strange and wonder why we bought him if we don't want to play him.

If players like Trybull, Leitner and Drmic are not wanted, looks like we are loaning out our recent signings whilst playing our loan signings. Perhaps Sorensen will be the next to go.

It all seems a bit hit and miss, the transfer dealings left us short in vital positions last season, let's hope we don't make the same mistakes.

Webber has previous for leaving us over loaded in certain areas and then short in others. We saw it last season with the centre backs and I fear it could happen this season with the full backs.

I don't consider 100% redundancy to be leaving us short at centre back last season. I would blame Farke for rushing players back from injury more than Webber for providing us with 4 decent centre backs...

we need two proper left backs in the squad.

Only 100% redundancy?

Was chatting to someone today who has got a good connection at the club and he was saying that they REALLY rate Mumba.

He was £350K wasn’t he, and couldn’t get a game in League 1 at Sunderland? If he is that good, it reflects very poorly on them.

As opposed to the maturity you showed by suggesting the professional journalist and professional football coaches he reported on didn't know what they were doing?

Quite often I post some lovely stuff. Feel free to check out my history by all means.

I just also love a good silly post when I see one. It's not my fault its usually yours.

If SM is going to continue his development then I’d much rather we see him playing week in week out Championship level football at a club that aren’t likely to be hurting our promotion chances. Sat on the bench behind Quintilla all season will not be doing us or Sam any favours at all. We need him playing and developing. If plans are afoot to bring in a loan LB to cover Quintilla in the event of an injury etc then I’d have no problem with this - I’d rather we had a player from another club potentially unhappy on the bench than one of our own. SM seems to have his head on his shoulders so I doubt he’s upset at getting regular first team football at a club he knows well whilst hopefully developing in the trajectory we would hope for a potential future career in the PL. The incentive there is for him to play out of his skin over the coming months and give Farke and Webber no choice but to recall him in January.

It may be a poor move to some, but equally it also has the potential to be a very clever move too.

As for Rupp, he may not be everyone’s favourite City player, but what a world we live in where a City follower earlier in the thread calls him ‘a tool’. I mean really??? Why so personal? Seems a perfectly decent bloke to me, which is certainly more than can be said for the poster in question.

He was one of their best players but once he made it known he was off they dropped him and loaned him out to spite him. Nothing to do with ability.

So stick him in the first team, let him impress and get his value up.

They didn't do that though - they did what non-scoring strikers said. Anyway, let's hope he fulfils his potential with us.

Perhaps if Aarons stays we'll loan him back to Sunderland for first team experience.

🙂 The first time I read that I thought you meant we were going to loan Aarons to Sunderland. 🙂  It sounds very much as though Mumba has burned his bridges at Sunderland, but we'll see.

So we've gone from having too many LBs to not enough. Hopefully we'll get cover before the window shuts but we're taking the **** a bit if we think we can get auto promotion with just the one specialist in that position. I take it Quintilla doesn't have a return clause?

Defensive player can play in defensive position shock.

Some defensive players can play some defensive positions.

Nothing I've seen of Klose lately indicates he'd be anything other than a liability at left back. Injuries have taken their toll and he just doesn't seem as mobile anymore and that is hugely important at fullback. I'd probably have him 6th choice for the position at best.
