Graham Paddons Beard 2,431 Posted September 3, 2020 Just received this from the League Managers Association The League Managers Association is deeply saddened following the death of member Fred Davies, at the age of 81.Fred made nearly 400 appearances in the English Football League playing as a goalkeeper for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cardiff City and Bournemouth.Upon retiring from playing, he joined his former Bournemouth manager John Bond as a coach at Norwich City during the 1970s and later had two spells on the coaching staff at Swansea City during the 1980s. He joined up again with John Bond in the early 1990s at Shrewsbury Town and stepped in as caretaker manager after Bond's resignation in May 1993. Davies' first season in management was a great success as he guided Shrewsbury Town to the Third Division championship, resulting in him being officially appointed on a full-time basis in January 1994. He also took The Shrews to Wembley for the first time in their history in April 1996 when they reached the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield. Fred managed Weymouth for two seasons from 1997 to 1999, winning promotion to the Southern Premier League in his first season there. LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson said: “Fred was well respected by his peers. As a goalkeeper, a coach and a manager, Fred’s successes were all earned the hard way. “He was a credit to the professional game.” LMA Chief Executive Richard Bevan added: “Fred’s contribution, impact and influence on English football was vast, most notably in his role as manager of Shrewsbury Town. “Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his partner Allison and all his family and friends.”
