Southampton v Man City and the Norwich way

Recommended Posts

Watched all of this match yesterday and was very impressed with Southampton.  Man City had no joy attacking them at all and Southampton had the ability to exploit Man City up front.  It kind of proves it was no disgrace losing to them in that first match back, it was just very disappointing.

Should Man City stop trying to play the Man City way because they lost against Southampton?  Of course not, but that is what has been suggested after our recent losses - that we stop trying to play the way we do.   We all know deep down that at it's best, the Norwich way, or farkeball, or whatever you want to call it - is great to watch.  It has to be at it's best, because if we are slightly off our game, we get done too easily - and that was true last season as well as this, except we were better up front last season.

So sticking to our "way" is the way we should continue - changing it for something else will only lead to yet another false start. Stick with the project, see it through to it's full development and we will surely have more days like we have had in this season where our football has been a pleasure to watch.   Its simply a case of improving what we do, not changing it.  Money isn't the answer, ask Stoke, Middsbro, Huddersfield, Villa, Bnmth, Watford etc, neither is getting a Pulis or Colin type manager.  The answer is to see it through - let it develop and improve - it is the only way available to us to - the Norwich way.......attractive, flowing, attacking and possesion based football - a mini Man City if you like - and if it works we won't be so mini either.  If it works, the sky is the limit.

Are you really convinced that we are playing the same football that we were at the start of the season?

Man City are 2nd in the league and have won EPL titles several times in the last 10 years. It's insane to suggest they change the way they play off the back of one bad result.

Norwich are bottom of the league with the lowest points tally in our EPL history and have scored just 1 goal in the last 9 games. Our way of playing is clearly and obviously not working, whether because it is unsuited to this league or because we lack the players to effectively carry it out against this opposition.

That does not mean people want to see Warnock or Pulis come in. But it would not hurt Farke to make some changes and show he recognises that what he is trying at the moment is not working. Oh, and playing Drmic and Duda is not the solution.

Can you not see the clear and obvious difference here?

The 'Man City way' has led to two league wins in the last 3 years. So of course one defeat doesn't mean you need to get rid, even if this season will have been disappointing from Pep's perspective.

Our way has led to 5 wins all season at this level. So while you don't need to go all Pulis ball it clearly isn't working and needs changing/tweaking.

All that Southampton v Man City game did for me was illustrate the absolutely huge gulf in terms of the level of commitment and physicality shown by a Southampton side (with supposedly nothing to play for) and the levels our own team (supposedly playing for their lives) have shown in the last four league games.

to be honest Man City still created a lot of chances and should have won on the balance of play but Southampton deserved something just for the level of effort they put in and the committed defending.

Maybe having more than one fit defender makes a big difference after all .. oh wait that excuse isn’t available is it. My bad ... home crowd then, maybe having a passionate home crowd ... OK I give up.
