The perils of new owners

Recommended Posts

Those who talk glibly of new owners bringing automatic success to the club must walk around with their eyes shut.

Let's look at reality. I will give you clubs where wealthy new ownership has bought nothing but misery - Ipswich Town,  West Ham, Sunderland and Wigan Athletic. Bury!!! Notts County!!! Arguably Manchester United. The list is lengthy.

It's obvious that due diligence can only go so far. It would take a miracle to find owners such as those at Leicester City - they are almost unique.

Pretty much every club in the prem has wealthy owners. The majority of the championship has wealthier owners than ours. Man City/Chelsea/Wolves are all clubs swapping with Man Utd as it stands and they are bankrolled. It’s a 50/50 shot. Wake up to modern day football, it’s money orientated!

i don't think i have read anywhere of new owners bringing automatic success however someone buying a stake in the club and investing a few quid to stop us treading water season after season to attempt to push us on would be handy but there appears to be non intent from Delia and MWJ to even entertain it so for those happy with potless Tom standing in the shadows i guess you are happy ?

Regardless, no ones going to be buying NCFC whilst most of the world is in financial ****e. As I understand it, the Newcastle takeover is looking very uncertain now. And I don’t see why NCFC would be overly attractive to someone seeking a return on their outlay anyway. They’ve likely not got any affiliation with Norwich City. I think people are daydreaming if they think we’re going to wake up with huge investment any time soon - is that even happening like it used to anyway, I can only think of Newcastle in recent times, where’s all these mega rich sheikhs and oligarchs queuing up to buy English football clubs? Because I can’t see them...

You were saying that some people are happy with Tom, I’m just saying I don’t think anyone is. I’d certainly prefer it if he doesn’t take over but I don’t think Delia and Michael are bothered about what any of us think are they ?

No i don't think they are bothered what we think to be honest. The last time Delia took any notice of the fans was that time she ditched the all yellow Colmans kit designed by her friend Bruce Oldfield.

What is the point in being against someone when you don't know how they will do in the job?  He is the natural heir to the shares and has been getting experience on the job, so no worries there and he is a Norwich fan.

If it is just about money, which is what it appears to be about, hasn't this argument been going on forever?  We are a club with a self sustaining ethos that if we are successful on the pitch will gradually increase our ability to build assets and be more likely to compete at the top level.  Has worked well so far with getting promoted and the assets have increased dramatically in player value and the money from this season - and parachute payments next season if we go down. And if we go down, we have a strong squad with young players coming through that will help keep that success going with another promotion in the offing, as one or two of the stars get sold on each year.  I can't see anything wrong with that in the slightest - but I can see an awful lot wrong with selling up to someone just because they have money, maybe not with the first new owner, but subsequent ones where say in five or ten years time we are sold on again to another unknown.

On balance, I would say the club is in good hands, the policies being followed are good ones and if you really are against the heirachy, then it is a case of be careful what you wish for.

The main issue I have with this constant topic is that I can never see the massive queues of Chinese businessmen banging on the door at Carrrow Road. I must go at the wrong times.

Our board wouldn't stand a chance financially if someone ACTUALLY wanted to buy the club. But until that happens it's just a non-discussion. We don't get to decide either way, certainly not when there aren't any buyers knocking the door down.

The club is well run and nobody is trying to force their way in. Accept it, because there is sod all people can do about it apart from b!tch and moan.

I agree with that. However, the jury remains out on Tom. I doubt he’s personally got the financial clout to take us forward, but by then I would have hoped to be seeing the fruits of our labour independently of what he can offer the club financially.

The thing is, I’m currently personally happy with this fresh approach and can see big improvements within the club. But my concern is that with Webber likely off in what would be the season where we would be hoping to see the next level in trying to establish ourselves as a Premier League club (in 2 seasons time all being well), what happens then?

I like the project, and 100% back it as is evident, but my fear is that it’s not really long term, with Webber off in two year, which is the only way it would work by the very nature of it. We may need a few years yo-yoing with minimal outlay and maximum cash building to really see this work. Once Webber’s off, so will all the hard work he’s put in to build this club up financially (in what I think is a very savvy manner), and we’ll likely be back to square one again - that’s basically my fear with this model.

I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, but basically the "Big 6" make a healthy profit from the Premier league money, Champions League money and overseas marketing. Outside of that the other clubs struggle to break even as the Premier League money gets eaten up by the wage bill.

I can see why someone like Wes Edens (who co-owns the Milwaukee Bucks) bought Villa and spent £100m-150m this season trying to establish them in the Premiership, I'm not sure how viable it is as a business model though.

As I pointed out in the thread earlier, I fail to see this long line of sheikhs and oligarchs buying up English clubs left right and centre. It’s not a common occurrence anymore. People need to stop deluding themselves, especially in this financial climate. There is NO queue to buy English football clubs. And regardless, as far as I can see, the only ones that have made a difference to a club - well, you can count on ONE hand.

Football supporters should have the right to dream, I think that’s what it’s all about, but *some* of the very same people going on about this mega rich buyer are the same people also laughing at people who are dreaming about NCFC staying up this season.

Which is.... a bit ironic.

Exactly. There is no reason why someone from the Middle East would fancy buying a largely unfashionable club, that the reality.

And for any of you wondering why we haven’t had this ‘stinking rich Chinese investor’ - that will NEVER happen. Why? Yellow is a big no no regarding branding and marketing in China, and is a colour also associated with pornography.

Taking notice of fans is not the same as agreeing with some of them or doing what some of them say. What would have happened if she'd agreed with the ones who wanted to ditch this model last season? Or if she'd agreed with much of what was said at St Andrew's hall in 2009?

I would say in the past I have expressed a concern over how our owners are not as wealthy as other owners and the effect that has on our spending and chances of establishing ourselves in the Premier League* (*Not sure whether there is a definitive definition of what that is, Watford could be put forward as an example but of course they are now fighting to stay in the Premier League), but given the current situation with football I am so glad we have not over committed and are as best placed as any club to weather the financial storm brewing in football and the wider UK economy. If this is taken as being a happy clapper so be it, I do not see it as a binary argument as tends to happen on this forum.......
