daly 501 Posted June 30, 2020 Amazing to think how in the 50’s 60’s 70’s playing with a leather ball that felt like a cannonball when wet, pitches like ploughed fields NCFC. mainly managed to play the same 11 week in week out

Mason 47 1,379 Posted June 30, 2020 Krul Godfrey Tettey Lewis Hernandez Mclean Trybull Stiepermann Buendia Cantwell Pukki 6-0 Norwich, all 3 centre backs scoring towering headers from corners. Easy.
Yellowhammer 86 Posted June 30, 2020 (edited) Today’s players are fragile not like the old boys of the 70s running up mousehold Heath giving each other a piggy back and only about 14 or 15 regular first team players Edited June 30, 2020 by Yellowhammer

In the past loads of players would routinely have pain killing injections into knees, hips ankles etc. Kept them going but they paid the price later in life. Bodies wrecked by playing under the influence of steroids when they should have been rested and healed. I'm glad player welfare is on the agenda nowadays...otherwise we might as well watch Christians being thrown to the lions for entertainment.
DraytonBoy 147 Posted June 30, 2020 The fitness levels required to be a top player now are insane compared to even 20/30 years ago so is it any wonder there are so many muscle injuries?
Making Plans 936 Posted June 30, 2020 (edited) We really only need Aarons. If he's fit we can manage quite comfortably without Rupp and Leitner. Suppose Idah's injury must have happened during all that time he spent on the pitch on Saturday. He wouldn't get a game anyway so we can presumably manage without him too. Exactly. It's almost an arms race nowadays with regards to fitness: every year players have to become ever so slightly fitter, quicker and stronger to maintain the same level. Players are being pushed to the edge of human limits, so it's no wonder that injuries are increasing at the top level of professional football.

Yorkshire Canary 118 Posted June 30, 2020 It would have been more frustrating if we were still in with a realistic chance of staying up. Some players have a very poor fitness record but most are fine. We may as well concentrate on getting the players fit for next season, if that means giving some youngsters a chance so be it, nothing to lose

There must be a reason why elite athletes get far more muscle injuries than Sunday League players, for example.
Capt. Pants 4,227 Posted June 30, 2020 Losing Rupp would be massive in addition to losing Tettey in midfield. .Think I'm right in saying the Trybull/McLean combo hasn't mustered a single point this season.

Probably because the clubs do not risk players particularly as the biggest clubs could name two first teams. The slightest niggle and its off to the private clinic. And Sunday League players pay to play so love the game so much they play with injuries. But you have to wait an awful long time for a scan as an amateur and you would miss an awful lot of games. And professional Rugby players play more games, in a more physical game and turn out game after game. So maybe its just the money the players are worth.
