You told me that over a year ago and we ended up being the absolute best side in the entire division that season. So going by your track record, we're gonna win the league again next season!

I was pointing out our investment level and what one would ordinarily expect on that budget. The team over performing or under performing doesnt change that. Yes we had an amazing promotion season but it was against all odds and nobody on here called it the pre-season before. Indeed the general sentiment was that L1 beckoned again.  We then went on a run mainly thanks to unearthing some gems - but let us not pretend we paid for this. Pukkki surprised everyone and was free and Zimmerman, for example, came from total obscurity. We got lucky. Or else we had/have amazing scouts. But if that is the case - why the turgid transfer windows since?

Now we have parachute payments and will probably do OK next season. But in terms of investment from the board- we are still having to punch well above our actual economic wealth to stand still and meet fans expectations. At some point this wont work and then we will see exactly where our 1990's local model fits long term in a growing pyramid of global billionaire backed clubs.

One caveat- pandemic could be kind to us. It is possible the economic free fall after Covid will shake things up, reveal the unaffordability of most other clubs and reward our frugality. Time will tell.

This is a bit poor DCB, come on.

There was no 'general sentiment' that League One beckoned. That was the extreme view from the Delia Out-ers, the general concensus was that we'd struggle to get promoted again, admittedly.

To say we got lucky is completely cheapening the season we had. Was it 'lucky' that we'd recruited in our youth ranks appropriately? Was it 'lucky' that we had a coach / staff who had continued to implement a style of play despite the 'expert fans' telling them repeatedly in the first season it was dull and boring? Was it 'lucky' that we played the best football in the division? Was it 'lucky' that we scored more goals than anyone else, more than Wolves the season before who were widely regarded as the best team to ever play in the Championship?

Farke in, of course. This is his first season at this level with restrictions most experienced managers would baulk at.

There are concerns, for sure. Defensively he clearly doesn't have much of a clue still (there are many managers who don't) and I have reservations about how earlier in the season we were specifically drawing teams in and trying to pass through them, and now we've turned into a pinball machine trying to get the ball up the pitch in as few passes as possible.

Regardless of a few concerns however it isn't like he's absolutely lost the plot like Neil did and he's on good terms with most of the squad. We'll do much better in the long run keeping that going.
