1. Why are Sheff Weds called the owls

2. Who are the Royals and what was their original nickname and why

3. Name Lincoln City's nickname, and why

4. What club was once known as the Bank of England

5. Can you name all three WBA nicknames

6. Who were once known as the Lilywhites

7. A nickname for Newport County

8. Known as the (old ) Invincibles

9. Everton, why toffeemen

10. What stadium would you find the Terriers playing at

answers tomorrow - Thursday,

I think I know 1), 2), 3) 4), where there are at least two answers, 6), 9) and 10)

5. one of the three is 'the Albion'

6 & 8. may be linked

7. Has four names listed - so any will do (picked up name after televised cup game)

9. does have a couple of answers - though both amount to the same

10. does have a couple of answers  - as it could be the original name or the naming rights name

In that case then I know 5) and 😎 as well.

6. is actually Spurs, where I suggest the name fell out of use given it does not suggest a physical game

1. is geographical

2. is food based

3. has something Norwich is famous for

1) From Owlerton Road or the Owlerton district of Sheffield where they were founded (it was a boys' club or some such), and played on a Wednesday because that was when the club met.
2) Reading and they used to be called The Biscuitmen, cos they made such in the town. When Robert Maxwell had the crazy notion of merging his Oxford United with Reading the name he came up with was the Thames Valley Royals.

3) The Imps, after the legend of the cathedral and the devil.

4) Has been applied to Sunderland, and then Everton in the1960s.
5) Throstles and Baggies, and The Albion evidently.
6) Preston North End.
7) No idea.
8. I think that was Preston too,. pre world war one.
9) After the Everton Toffee sweet.
10) McAlpine I think.

2. a big Huntley and Palmer biscuit factory

5. The baggies - the most credible explanation seems to be the baggy trousers worn by their supporters - used to protect in foundries

 

7 the Exiles, The Ironsides, The Port, The County

10. Kirklees Stadium - currently naming rights as John Smiths brewery
