Says "The trial is continuing to enroll and is expected to continue through the final analysis when a total of 164 confirmed COVID-19 cases have accrued" @Well b back

Thanks.

Can I assume that as the NY Times had pointed out, there gets to a stage where it is beyond logic that it can’t be working ?

10 million initial doses, so 5 million people assuming the 10 million is actual doses as opposed to the 10 million being both the doses.

UK will have procured 10m doses by end of year, No10 says

Downing Street has welcomed the results of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine tests, describing them as promising and adding that the UK will have procured 10 million doses by the end of the year, if it is approved. A further 30 million doses have already been ordered for next year.

The prime minister's official spokesman said: "We will know whether the vaccine is both safe and effective once the safety data has been published and only then can licensing authorities consider making it available to the public.

"In the meantime, the NHS stands ready to begin a vaccination programme for those most at risk, once a Covid-19 vaccine is available, before being rolled out more widely."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tweeted the announcement by the pharmaceutical company was "really encouraging news".

And Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said there was "light at the end of the tunnel" and hope "science is going to find us the way out of this terrible time".

Her Wales counterpart Mark Drakeford said it was good news but warned: "I think you'd always want to read carefully what a particular competitor in this field says on their own behalf."

He added he was "not going to be tempted to suggest that this somehow means there is a magic bullet on the horizon".

Seems like we've been waiting on here forever, for this news - at last it is here and we can all start thinking about life getting back to normal by sometime around the middle of next year at latest  ??

Would certainly be nice if they told us if the 10 million doses were enough for 10 million people or 5 million

Great news, WBB indeed lets keep this about the discussion, been one of the best threads through this tough time. Light at the end of the tunnel confirmed. Seriously hope those vulnerable and front line get the vaccine approved before anything happens to anyone.

Time to celebrate back at FCR soon my friends.👍💛💚😉🍻

Mark, I’d make the assumption that a dose would be treatment for one person, so enough for 10 million, but who knows!

It is really good news of course but I doubt the Establishment will be loosening their iron grip on football anytime soon! 'Mass gatherings' will be one of the last things to be reopened you can bet on that. Indeed a worrying and quite chilling stance was made on Sky News by a medical guy I think it was who said ...............'we won't be returning to normal, just a new kind of normal'.  Think the saying - Balloon, **** and Burst sums up that guy!

it might not be straight back to full crowds and 90th min mosh pits when Teemu bags one in off his **** but it will not be too long before those scenes are back again!

Everything I read says x number of doses, which is enough for x/2 people, so my guess is 5 million - but that is exactly that, a guess. But the logistics of getting it out to the community won’t be simple, especially as it has to be stored at such a low temperature, so I’d expect the additional 30/15 million to be in the supply chain before the 10/5 million are given.

Maybe Boris will say tonight but I fear not he will probably rightly be very cautious. 60 and type2 I would be fairly high on the list, but if it is 5 million not expecting this year as a 1/3 will probably be allocated ( quite rightly ) to those on the frontline, followed by over 75s and I guess there are a lot of them. Won’t be many in the first groups declining their dose I wouldn’t think.

Yes Nuff, as above hopefully we’ll get more info in coming days. As for storing and distribution, normal flue vaccines along with other medications are stored at low temperatures, so nothing new, just the massive distribution and implementation issues, but this has already been discussed and planned as I’ve been informed, they were looking to use 5 major vaccination centres in larger cities or local surgeries or hospitals in smaller population areas. Again only info I was told last month, so not official.

As for football was being more positive than realistic, I know as I’ve said on many responses, regardless of this vaccination starting it will be months before normal life comes back and what normal will be could be a little different to before. The government will still need to control numbers of infections to stop overwhelming the NHS, But I can see limited numbers heading back to sporting and social events.

Some bad news there Indy Pfizer needs -80 Fahrenheit and can be refrigerated for a max of 24 hours. Hence the reason if you look back a couple of weeks the NHS were buying specific fridges on a mass order. If I have that wrong I am sure TJ will correct me, but most of the early ones have the same issues. Johnson and Johnson ( if successful ) could still take over as they don’t have the issues and will therefore stand to be the vaccine easiest to be transported around the world.

Hope I am corrected on that but I am pretty certain that’s the case.

Now being quoted as the biggest scientific breakthrough for 100 years and attention will turn to developing the next vaccines for diseases we don’t even know exist yet.

Hi, yes sorry, I am aware of the limitations that’s why I know they talked about setting up large vaccination centres in high population areas. But it’s a great start to protect the vulnerable & frontline to then allow the rest of the population at very low risk to go back to levels of normality.

Like everything it’s a tool to help normality. In other poorer countries we need to keep developing other vaccines, but this is great news.

Question answered, we have 40 million ordered, which he states is 2 per person meaning 1/3 vaccinated ie 20 million. So the 10 million doses I have to assume is 5 million people.

S protein ? We missed that one ? TJ over to you lol

That is very promising for all the vaccines.

Van Tam normally plays it down ( so he should ) normally but is hopeful the new normal could return Spring.

Now that is interesting they don’t know as yet wether it will just protect you from the serious infection. Again correct me if I am wrong but I think he was saying if that is the case more will need to take it.

Hi VW

I think it’s yourself that has the list of priorities for vaccination. If that’s correct would you mind posting it please as that’s the list they are talking about, although I appreciate it may not be the final list.

You can see that this and other vaccines must be very good news, they know more than letting on as their body language is giving them away.
We must be very strong and carry on with the lock down, cleanliness and distancing while this stage progresses, hope that all areas continue to drive the R number down so we can have slightly relaxed December.

Not bad for somebody who hasn’t seen any papers yet ( not newspapers ) he just explained you have 1 jab, limited protection, you have your second jab 3 weeks later, then your immunity kicks in 14 days after that ( assuming your body works with it ).

Especially you guys in Norfolk as I am sure those North of Coventry will agree, you didn’t get it bad keep it that way, don’t take risks now.

Bbc just said in addition we will also have several million Oxford doses in December. Have they just made something up ?

I have a hunch this will be drip fed, too much good news at once will blow a hole in the public health strategy. I suspect the mutated virus could well blow a hole in some of this and hence the dramatic reaction we have seen, hopefully done in good time.

Indeed there is a bit more on this but more the science world seems to be going mad at the Danish scientists for not informing people quicker ( is that not what happened in China ). Will watch Jenners website.

Just seen a quote from van Tamm I think saying it protects against getting infected , full stop.

Thanks to all the background on the thread I’m feeling well briefed for the arrival of the vaccine, well done guys!!

Lol

They should have invited the members of the thread to answer the questions for the PM.

I think the only thing we missed was the S Protein, but TJ probably told us that and we didn’t grasp it. Let’s hope Oxford has the same efficacy, certainly Van Tam was hinting that the main 6 should be ok as they use the same S Protein as Pfizer. Just hope this blinking mink thing is nothing.

Didn’t realise Pfizer also were viagra founders. One of the papers has a headline, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes. Another brilliant headline -  ‘ One small jab for man ‘
