For the integrity of Football - tosh!!

Recommended Posts

I am sick of hearing ex-footballers or managers saying we must finish the season regardless of when , because of the integrity of the game. What a load of complete bull, don’t think Football has held the integrity line so well this week. It really is not that important in the scheme of things, businesses and people have been put under huge strain because of this bloody virus, people are dying, football really is not that important. If we had to play Doncaster Rovers away next year on a cold and wet Tuesday night, I would take it, at least there would be a sign of normality ( probably for sure normality for us) . Pundits should stop being in denial !!!

Amen to all those sentiments.

Probably never to happen but it would fantastic if once this is over the FA actually took back control of our sport and starting running it in the interests of the supporters, clubs and players.

Yes, there would probably be a bit less less money from TV but it would still be worth a huge amount to the broadcasters even if it was on terms dictated by football. There was never any need for football to sell its soul to TV, just the Premiership's greed and its determination to wring every last penny out of the broadcasters and s*d the supporters.

This is true but it didn't suddenly happen this week.

It would be fantastic if the game reclaimed it's soul when this is over but there wasn't much appetite for it a month or so ago.

We shall see....

Rooney - "if players come out and say they are not willing to cut by 30%, even if the real reasons are that it will financially ruin some, it will be presented as 'Rich Players Refuse Pay Cut'.

"Financially ruin" ???????

If there is one club in the top two divisions who consistently adopt as honest as can be approach to financial matters, never had filthy rich owners, cut its cloth according to which division it lays in, so every penny is important and integral to be used wisely, its our club. Ive no idea how one levels a playing field in a sport so unevenly matched, financially, as the 92 clubs in England, but maybe Coronavirus is giving a nudge to at least give the oppurtunity for it to happen...but then greed is greed, in good times and bad.

Yes, life is more important than sport but sporting life will go on at some point and although the last time we had a crisis that threatened a season - at the start of the second world war - the season was cancelled, but only one game had been played so it was not a big deal.  This situation, the season was nearly done and it is important to have an idea what will happen once the present situation improves to return to football with some sense of purpose.

If you take the money out of the equation - and although money is an issue, it is not the the only concern - there is still a strong argument for wanting to finish the season and then go on to next season.  It's a terrible situation at the moment, but it is simply a question of how you plan to get the institution of football to return when the time is right, with some fairness for as many people as possible.  Fairness to all clubs means completing the season so the following season, whenever that may start, can start with everyone feeling that footballing issues have been settled with some sense of common sense.

I still don't think next season is certain to happen in full and the truth is, no-one really knows how all this is going to pan out, so better to leave the situation with all options open. None of us can plan very much at the moment, it is simply a case of us all putting things on hold, with nothing ruled out.

The reality is that many players are in a similar financial position to many clubs - up to the neck in 'debt'

Both will have made financial commitments based on the assumption that 'good times' would contine to roll....endlessly.

Make no bones about it, if these games are not played they  will either have to rack up more debt to meet those commitments (player contracts) or go bust.

If players have borrowed to such an extent that they are at risk of financial ruin, then wait while I go and chop a small onion ............. I might just shed a tear.

That is a very dangerous assumption to make. Living within your means is something many of us learn the hard way; footballers and clubs cannot expect to be excluded from that process.
