There will be a meteor shower in a few weeks, probably around the 22nd/22rd. Just look around midnight towards the north east at say 60 degrees. There could be one or even two shooting stars per minute (the Lyrids). Not as bright as Venus but exciting to see.

Astronomy is my first love, since I was a very small child. The radio programme Journey Into Space (anyone remember it?)had me spellbound every week.

When I'm really really old - if I'm spared - I want to take it up seriously.

Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold,
And many goodly states and kingdoms seen;
Round many western islands have I been
Which bards in fealty to Apollo hold.
Oft of one wide expanse had I been told
That deep-brow'd Homer ruled as his demesne;
Yet did I never breathe its pure serene
Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold:
Then felt I like some watcher of the skies
When a new planet swims into his ken;
Or like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes

Absolute top thread DIABD. After I'd finished shopping at city centre Tesco about 7pm (nice and relaxed and sensible social distancing) I came out and saw it. The sky was a beautiful dark inky blue, a sliver of moon was laying on it's back and directly above it was Venus shining so brightly as you describe. I actually put down my shopping and just stared at the beautiful sight for a couple of minutes - and hardly a soul about either.

I grew up watching Patrick Moore and completely devoured one of his early books showing sky charts each month (kept renewing the library loan!). I still have my copied notes almost 50 years later!

Astronomy, birds and trees. Such innocent times.

There's  a fantastic app in my wifes iPad that through  gps or summat puts on screen whatever's portion if the sky ita pointed at. Lots if info, zoom the  lot  . Shes in bed so cant name that app till tomo.
