The clue there is that they are doctors - there’s evidence that medical staff are so bombarded by the virus that they are at a greater risk of getting it.  A young (40s) otherwise healthy Italian paramedic died earlier in the week.

The young certainly have a dellusional sense of invincibility if the crowds of youngster I see wandering about are anything to go by. How long before we have enforced containment? It can't be far off.

It’ll certainly be sooner rather than later, due to people seemingly being unable to act on advice.  It seems to be how society is nowadays.

Interestingly, there seems to have been a ‘spike’ from people who attended Cheltenham last week - 60-70k were squashed into the crowd for 4 days - at the time it felt odd given football was suspended the weekend before.

I'm sure lockdown will come to the UK this week. The public haven't been following the advice, so they're going to be made to stay at home, whether they like it not.

But what may shock the bulk-buyers and hoarders is that supermarket shopping will still be allowed. Even in China under the super-strict quarantine it was permitted.

Err.. yeah, people get it. Hundreds of thousands of people have caught it and are fine. I could have had it and not realised. The reason for the social distancing is that there are vulnerable people who won’t survive it. It may shock you Ricardo, but not everyone is solely out for themselves. Some of the decisions, made by the government (and those millions of people who have heeded their guidance) are done for the good of the community, even where there’s no real benefit for certain individuals.

If you had watched the videos  you would have seen people being allowed intl shops one at a time. At no time were supermarkets open for all and sundry to mill about. Most apartment blocks were sealed off and food delivered.

So if people were being allowed to shop (albeit one at a time) and food was being delivered, why do we need to stockpile for weeks as you have criticised others for not doing? Doesn’t really stack up does it.

I posted this video of a supermarket in Milan yesterday in another thread.

If the supermarkets adopt a maximum capacity and a 'one in, one out' policy with those outside kept a metre apart, and the public adheres to it, there's no issue.

If people continue to flout government advice by cramming into crowded supermarkets, bulk-buying and fighting amongst each other then I guess we have bigger long-term problems than coronavirus.

Don't shoot the messenger  you are always at liberty to ignore any advice. However the crunch has occurred  because many either disputed there was going to be a problem or didn't want to believe how bad it might get.

The shops are empty now because of irresponsible scaremongering and not listening to sound advice not to stockpile.Otherwise why are shops calm orderly and stocked in other countries with severer restrictions?

What has the advice been Ricardo? There hasn’t been any advice to stockpile. In fact, the advice has been the exact opposite. You’re making it up to justify your own selfishness aren’t you?

What you mean, is that you’ve been stockpiling for weeks against all actual advice, and are now calling people stupid for not doing so. This ignores anyone who can’t afford to buy extra food each week. Some people can barely afford a weekly shop, never mind adding extra on. Stupid aren’t they!

It ignores people who have large families and can’t store food for three weeks for a family of five. stupid aren’t they! It ignores the elderly who don’t have internet for home delivery and can basically bring home what they can carry (not three weeks worth  of tins of dry food). Stupid!

Had people, including you, followed the actual advice (don’t stockpile, there’s no need), then there would be enough for everyone. You’ve been selfish and are now calling others out for not being selfish. You’ve confirmed you were aware that even in China people could still go to the shops and could get deliveries, so there’s no need to panic buy and stock up for weeks in advance. Yet your only justification for doing so is some “advice” which you’ve just made up. You called me out on another thread a few days ago for suggesting that the economic impact on millions of non-risk people could be just as disastrous as anything else. Really Ricardo you’re looking out for yourself and that’s all. 

You have every right to do so of course. Just perhaps consider that your preaching says more about the sort of person you are than it does those you’re criticising.

The messenger is part of the UK attitude problem by encouraging irrational stockpiling that is causing the problem in the UK that does not exist in other countries with severer restrictions.

Have you stockpiled enough for the next year? The warnings (which you’re so keen on) are that this will last a long time before a vaccine is ready. 

Will be interesting to see how Chinas numbers change once lockdown is relaxed

250,000 died in a couple of hours in the 2004 tsunamis. There were no warning sirens in most of the countries. Quarter of a million dead. Youve just said they would have been fine had they been more sensible.
