I'm afraid it is now a fifth one for us in Cornwall now. We heard rumours this morning but it has now been confirmed. Person in their 60's with underlying health problems.

Our Hospital was at the very bottom of the league table until recently and when most of us have an illness or referral, we have a choice of going elsewhere and invariably do. While we do love the NHS and its staff, I think there is a growing concern that it isn't what it is cracked up to be.

Maybe when this is over there will be a genuine attempt to make it as outstanding as it was.

And even though I'm not a fan, I have to say Johnson has been more impressive today. What he said today was correct. We have heard reports of so many people who have been visiting the beaches around us. Our nearest one had a group of lads drinking in the car park because the local Cafe/restaurant was shut. It is nice to have a drink al fresco but now is not the time.

The sun was wonderful and warm this afternoon and Mrs KG and I had a lovely peaceful afternoon in our back garden which is a sun trap, And I understand people live in apartments and homes without gardens, but if we don't volunteer, the Government will make us.

Pleased to see the camping and caravan club and various other similar organisations have now closed their touring sites. We also need to ensure that people stay away from all the static caravans on the NN coast.

I can understand the government’s stance, but you would think people would be sensible thus allowing everyone to be able to go out and keep that distance of separation......we went through Dunwich woods and had a picnic with friends of ours and the dogs kept well apart and still had a fab time. Lots of people pretty much doing the same.

Why can’t people just take some responsibility, including teaching their kids this importance too.

Agreed that everyone has to take responsibility and some plonkers are clearly ignoring the guidance completely.

Id be very surprised if the ‘guidance’ doesn’t become stricter soon. Accidental spreading can happen even with the very best of intentions to stay apart. The more socialising that goes on (even with good intentions to stay six feet apart), the more likely that there will be accidental spreading.

Not surprised to see this if indeed it is correct, I said some time ago that BJ is quite Liberal and shutdowns would go against his instincts, but he better get used to it PDQ cos some folk just aint going to listen.

Agreed. Can't rely on some people to do the right thing.

Even with rudimentary German you should be able to understand this.

Anyone care to translate this? I have no German & can only hazard a vague guess.

Very roughly translated;

Wash your hands like you've just chopped chillies and you want to go for a.......and I'll leave you to guess the last word.😀

Expecting people to stay indoors when we're having the first fine weather for six months just isn't realistic, especially with kids off school not of their own choosing.  But there's no need to head for the tourist traps.  I walked for an hour this morning along lanes and tracks around Eaton and Keswick, hardly a soul in sight and beautiful beyond words.  Didn't cost a penny either.   Being outside with social distancing of two metres is now officially OK, apparently.

Can anyone understand why it's still business as usual for dentists and opticians?

Serious question: I'm going shopping this morning, would wearing gloves help? I understand the virus doesn't live long on fabric surfaces.

McDonalds to close all UK outlets. Not a hit for most people, but again, screws you over if you haven't got food in the cupboard.

If you’re going to order out (and I understand why some people might not want to) most of the independent local restaurants (certainly around me) are now offering a takeaway or delivery service. They’ll need the custom more than McDonalds.

(P.s. many are also offering fairly large discounts of up to 25 per cent from their usual eat in prices)

With the caveat that this is only what I have read................

Science is still unsure how long the virus can live on any surface and even if fabric gloves were effective then every item you buy will already have been touched by at least one other person.

We have put some wipes in the car. Use them before you get out and use them when you get back in. And then wash them when you get home and then wash them again after you have put any shopping away.

Just as a footnote: Local Aldi almost normal. Not much pasta & didn't see any bog rolls (though I wasn't looking) loads of kitchen roll, which I did need. And no dry roasted peanuts. Grrr.

You can buy packets of 50 disposable vinyl gloves in Sainsburys. Use and throw in the bin.

Interesting little side note, in the UK and average of 1500 people will die today, an average of 460 or these will die each day of heart disease, around 350 will die of cancer.
As scary as this virus is, I’d love to know how much this will go up by in next years figures. Are we doing enough in other areas of our lives when so much cost is being used on this virus when other diseases appear to just be looked upon as life style choices?

heart disease and cancer are not contagious

and neither are solely cause by 'life choises - see breast cancer for women

I take you point though - however when you have a Home Secretary whose previous work was in fighting regulation curtailing tobacco use, curtailing the use of children to produce that tobacco and working for a brutal military regime that likewise produces tobacco you have to wondeer where societies priorities lie, as with

" Boris Johnson faced a ferocious backlash over his plans to review the sugar tax yesterday, as MPs threatened to block any attempt to scrap it. " Sept 2019

and most will remember Jiohnson's attitude towards a campaign to get kids to eat more healthy food

" "I say let people eat what they like. Why shouldn't they push pies through the railings?"

I was alluding to heart disease Bill as a lifestyle choice as most is caused by poor diet, lack of excersize or smoking / vaping (To be confirmed, but not healthy).

As for cancers a lot are put down to stress.....not going to be helped by this situation.

As for your point of not contagious, totally agree, though it’s not the virus on it’s own which is the killer, the underlying illness or disease appears to be high risk. So it’s that which interests me, I wonder how much higher this years death toll will be to the normal average, or will there be a high toll as this takes hold and less the back end of the year. Just part of my engineering background is analytical so this does interest me.

A point here is how many of the deaths would have fallen into the expected mortality rates - only this virus will be listed as the cause.

There is also the thought that those dying of heart disease and cancer much later in life may not be completely down to life style but work practices that are now outlawed. That was my point about having two of the countries highest offices occupied by persons who have shown opposition to curtailing harmful activities.

It should be remembered that Johnson spent his early career in twisting and lying about EU intentions so as to spin them as crazy. Whereas, they were aimed at bettering our society. Vacuum cleaners were not being banned because they were too powerful they were made to be more efficient - something we now see. Less energy, more efficiency.

Persuading people towards a better lifestyle would seem wasted effort when you have those at the top pushing the other way.

""On the same day that Cancer Research UK is warning of the rising cancer threat of obesity, and with own cheer leader Matt Hancock supporting a plan to strengthen the obesity strategy, Johnson wants to water down the strategy to tackle it."

"He has serious questions to answer about the role of corporate lobbyists for the drinks and tobacco industry in his campaign. Boris Johnson has shown that his priority is representing the interests of his wealthy supporters, with no concern for the health and wellbeing of the general public."

Depends on the sort of gloves Ron, if they are disposable and you have picked up virus on the gloves you dispose of the virus along with the gloves. Another benefit, even if not disposable gloves, is that wearing them tends to reduce the habit of frequently touching your face, we tend not to do that so much when wearing gloves.

I think health is very paradoxical. The further science manages to develop the longer people live. The more people in the world, the more problems. Especially as people are living longer as well.

My cancer was, we can never say cured, removed by a robot. A few years ago, I wouldn't still be here. And I may now live for long enough to take out more in pension than I ever put in. And in the meantime, I may have to go to hospital numerous times. And I receive medication daily for which I don't have to pay for. My mother in law had a hip replacement at 88.

I don't personally think the NHS can continue the way it is funded now. There maybe has to be a separate form of National Insurance that goes to it. I do not want to see those who can afford it use it but so much of its time and money is being taken up by those who are no longer contributing.

Never will there be a better opportunity to put 5% on tax and pass it on to the NHS. They won't do it though
