I went to see a digitised improved sound Star Wars late eighties / early nineties,  fell asleep  after 10 mins, woke up  at the end. Maybe I am truly a lost soul . If only I'd seen God in his true form,my life could have been  so different.

I believe the original three books of the Jedi are the only true, the new 6 are constructed by the sith and should be cast aside!

Seriously, I was 7 when I first went to pictures to see this and then Empire Strikes Back is my first choice of that franchise films. If you grew up with the originals then you’re lucky. I was a geeky kid who loved Space 1999 too.

Why, did you think it would be all over in a fortnight?

This about covers it Ricardo. I realise Crace isn't everyone's cup of tea but some insightful (and sardonic) humour in this piece.

What we wouldn't give for a Gordon Brown or John Major right now

Fair enough, must admit to loving old 70’s sci-fi stuff, not into anything post 1983. As for cowboy films again the spaghetti westerns like fist full of dollars and few dollars mor all the way through to true grit (John Wayne version) absolutely love. Can watch them over again.

If you have Netflix  try  'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' it's a Western , of sorts.

Well some believe viruses come from outer space, so maybe we should all be questioning the very universe.

Like I’ve always said, we only die once, so make the most of the timeline you have.....do what makes you happy and walk away from things which just make you miserable! Once you get miserable you might as well be dead.....

Panspermia! Fred Hoyle's (+ T. Gold & others) pet theory.

I read a book called Evolution From Space, which postulated there were clouds of virus seeding life throughout the universe.

Not sure how much evidence there exists for it, but there were a couple of interesting points made, i.e.

1) Organisms characteristics are decided by their environment. Viruses can survive near 0 deg.K & withstand high radiation doses. They are also low mass enough to be propelled by radiation pressure. The sort of conditions in deep space ...

2)the probability of DNA appearing spontaneously in the known lifetime of the universe is very small. RNA is possible, but it's a big jump from there to DNA (apparently).

Mind you, Gold thought crude oil was a result of cold accretion, the centrifugal action of the Earth's rotation separating the lighter organic components from the denser minerals & forcing it to the surface via faults in the crust, like at volcanic sites.

So he spent a while looking around volcanoes. I don't think he found any oil though.

Jeff Bezos, Elon musk, bill gates  Warren buffet etc. All famously big land owners.

Is it the 18th century still?

My point still stands. When people like Pugin quotes figures of wealth they are including the value of land in those calculations. Indeed land is the biggest single asset type in monetary terms held by the richest.

And what usually follows when the Pugins of this world quotes his statistics, the follow-up cry is usually 'why don't we distribute that wealth more fairly?'. It's a noble question. But it is also an impractical question. If you were to divide up the 60% of world's land that is not covered by snow or mountains then each person would get around 11sqm.  In other words, not much use to anyone. So it's very relevant to point out to people that if they do wish to make use of comparative statistics then they ought to use meaningful data.

That is precisely how the banks and the rich have got away with it for years. Just terrify the non rich by telling them they're going to lose everything. Governments everywhere all fear the day that the poor have nothing to lose.

Sorry to be factual but if you have an employment pension then it is most likely to be invested to some degree in the stock market. That's the truth, and all markets can go down as well as up, as we are seeing. I don't see that as terrifying people, I see that as being honest and making people aware of the facts.

The stupidity is mind boggling.

But do you really think this Government is bothered about old people? If 100,000 of them die the savings going forward are absolutely enormous. The saving is estimated at £200,000,000 a year. And the dead people will leave money in their wills that will be spent. And the housing crisis will be solved

Why don't they abolish the winter heating allowance or lower the State pension if you think they are not bothered about old people? And take away their bus passes while we're at it? That'll force them to stay home.

We survived world wars and governments found cash (see those HUGE good reserves). They will need to ration food and make sure all get what they need. They need to shut down all interest payments, loans etc and basically shut down the country til this is done. The consequences if not will be massive. Social unrest on a scale never seen before...

In WW2, the government was borrowing around 25% of GDP to pay for the war effort. Took us years and years to pay it off.

"In WW2 the government was borrowing around 25% of GDP to pay for the war effort.  Took us years and years to pay it off."

Sometime in the 2000s I believe.  To be strictly accurate, it was money borrowed from the US under the Marshall Plan, or so I understand.

Henry Fonda as Frank; amazing casting.

The Wild Bunch is another good one.

'My Name Is Nobody' and 'They call me Trinty' are good if you like comedy westerns - both freely available on Youtube.

Anybody seen anything like this for Norfolk

'Statement from Visit Cornwall, Friday 20th March 2020, 12.00 Noon

Despite the lack of clarity from the Government, Visit Cornwall is advising that visitors should not come to Cornwall at this time.

In order to slow the spread of the virus, to protect themselves, as well as the communities of Cornwall.

We are asking people to postpone visiting Cornwall until a later date, when they will find Cornwall the same beautiful and welcoming place.'

The Wild Bunch is another good one.

Probably the greatest and most violent example of redemption you will ever see.  One of the greatest films ever made. Peckinpah such an underrated director. To take some old time actors and throw them into the gritty atmosphere he conjured up was a masterpiece.

Should be a sign outside of Southwold “ second home owners, **** off back to London and take the virus with you “

I remember the first time I watched the film: Jaws.

The tension of an unseen killer was palpable. The tension built and built right up until you saw the shark.

It was engrossing but never as tense and fear inducing again.

Coronavirus is ostensibly unpleasant and fatal for some. We can't see it, we are encouraged to act as if we are dealing with a phantom and this employs people's imaginations. In such circumstances people naturally see what they fear most and seldom does reality match it in term of severity.

There are occasions where the reality is worse: WW1 battlefields for example. But is Coronavirus in that category?

Government decisions always lead to unforseen problems and a battle plan lasts as long as the first shot.

Also, whatever the issue, people soon become wary. Remember all those WW2 child evacuees from City to Country: most went back in a short timescale.

And what of the hope people will 'do the right thing?' The frenzy at supermarkets is an example of how badly that can work just as blitzed houses were burgled.

At present we see the virus and the NHS pressure being the issue. I tell you, it will soon be shared with other problems.

This virus will cause huge intergenerational tensions. If you are young you will suffer little if at all and unless suffering with an underlying problem have almost zero chance of dying. If you are elderly the reverse is true.

So, who needs to go to work - the young.

Who needs education and qualifications? The young.

Who like to socialise in town centres at night, in clubs and bars. The young.

Who need to find partners and build relationships. Mainly, the young.

Who have to manage those home bound children and keep them entertained and engaged?  Young parents.

Who will be paying for the financial damage being caused?  The young.

Who has the most energy and drive? The young.

I could go on and on.....

Also, we will see an increase in domestic incidents including murders, mental health problems and anti-social behaviour.

I know a lot of very outgoing older people but these folk also have the home with a garden and resources to keep stimulated at home.

I predict the use of the Internet for gatherings with unmanaged alcohol consumption and drug misuse at domestic properties.

I predict civil disobedience and unrest.

I predict after 2 weeks of this there will be a clamour to reverse it.

The elderly and vulnerable need protection. The question will soon be: at what cost, not just financially but in terms of young people's education, life chances, debt, lack of leisure (including weddings and other life events).

We need to find a better way to protect the vulnerable and elderly whilst ending all these restrictions on the young who will soon learn to resent it, otherwise this virus will soon erode the fabric of society and we are not North Korea.

This is the fast developing dilemma and defeating a virus  threatens to be a phyhic victory.

It’s like a fire, when it’s small you can stamp it out but when it really gets raging in a community the only way it’s going to stop is when it burns itself out.

It’s not about young or old or vulnerable or sick or stupid, it’s about our community, and that’s what I see, community spirit growing and strengthening. Some good will come of this, eventually.
