TeemuVanBasten 3,327 Posted March 12, 2020 If the season is null and void and coronavirus costs teams gate receipts! Having money in the bank will help us if this stuff isn't covered by insurance. Big worry has to be season ticket renewals now though, if it's still around in May and there are doubts about the start of the next season that will really hit cash flow! Aggy 754 Posted March 12, 2020 Is there any suggestion the season will be null and void? Games played behind closed doors perhaps, or end it now and leave the tables as they stand currently even, but surely they wouldn’t just sack off the whole season and pretend it hadn’t happened. I think you'll find the decision not to commit ourselves to a large wage bill was that were we to be relegated then we would only get two years parachute payments instead of three years, This was what almost crippled us last time we were relegated. This is due to only two years being payable if a club has only been in the PL for one season There is an argument that were we to have spent far more we could have avoided relegation, as might happen now. However there is no conditional about what would happen had we spent that increased anount and then been relegated. A wage bill we could not afford as most players would have been on contracts that could be met with 3100m plus TV money, but not £32m in the 2nd year. As to CONVID-19 I think it best to wait and see how it pans out. It's pretty much out of our (frequently washed) hands - and speculation merely ourages panic. And an unknown for many is that high stress levels can affect the bodies immune ststem. Take sensible preventive measiutres - importantly those that stop folk from getting themselves unduly worried.I think that was the message of 'Keep calm and carry on'. And keep an eye out for the elderly - especially those on bycycles.😉
Surfer 1,547 Posted March 12, 2020 Welcome back Bill. Agree it's best to see what happens. Focus on protecting the vulnerable is the sensible thing to do. You can't protect everyone.
Pugin 601 Posted March 12, 2020 We are in totally uncharted territory. The government will be obliged to opt for the 'best worst' solution and is currently being torn in different directions by advisers and special interest groups, let alone large party sponsors such as the betting industry. The 'best worse' solution is actually to abandon the 2019/20 season right now. Government can leave it to the football regulators to pick up the pieces. In terms of NCFC's approach, it was thankfully and intelligently based on risk avoidance, and yes it can withstand the worst of what coronavirus throws at us. That's the beauty of employing good people. No one will have expected this scenario, but or strategy was robust enough to withstand the unexpected.
keelansgrandad 6,679 Posted March 12, 2020 ELF not happy with EPL who want to play behind closed doors. The EPL isn't as dependent on gate receipts, obvious with number of season tickets and TV money.

Why would the government have any say in how the EFL and EPL decide to end the season? The government might have a say in banning public gatherings (meaning games behind closed doors is a best case scenario), but the rest is not a government decision. Look at the league tables. So Man Utd qualify for Europe and Sheffield United don't? Sheffield United have a game in hand. Aston Villa go down? Again, they have a game in hand. One team in the relegation zone may have played all top 4 sides twice, another may have to still play two of them. Etc, etc. Lawsuits would bankrupt the Premier League. It will either be find a way to play the fixtures or void the season.

That’s a different point. The Italian government haven’t, as far as I’m aware, said that serie A needs to be decided on ‘x’ basis. Presumably at the moment it’s still up in the air what will happen to the league - will they play the games at a later date, will they scrap it and ‘skip’ a season, will they freeze the table as it is now? Who knows, but that’s for the footballing authorities to decide, not the national government.

It will either be find a way to play the fixtures or void the season. So if you ‘void’ this season - do you think Leeds and West Brom wouldn’t kick up a fuss? Or how about all the other teams who might have come up? Teams in the playoffs?. Sides in promotion places in every division below it as well. What about Liverpool? Or Leicester and Man Utd who missed out on champions league football last year but look like they might get it this year (but won’t if the season is ‘voided’)? What about sides who finished lower last year than their current position this year, they aren’t going to be happy about missing out on the extra millions they would get if the season was “frozen” as it is now. Do Norwich get more Tv money than Sheff Utd because we won the championship, despite them being much much higher up the prem table than us? Other than finishing the games, there is no outcome that everyone likes and I’m not sure that voiding the season is significantly more palatable to the majority of teams than ‘freezing’ the table. Palatable no, but legally enforceable yes. The only real alternative to voiding the season would be to ride out the storm and finish the remaining matches when they can, even though that may be several months away.
Aggy 754 Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) What do you mean by legally enforceable? Is it more ‘enforceable’ to void the season than freeze it? The examples above would lead to just as many legal claims if the season is ‘voided’ as there would be if it was ‘frozen’. I suspect that this is what will happen - a postponement of Euro 20 will give time for the domestic leagues and European competitions to finish and seems the most obvious solution. The only other decision might be to make the season null and void - I can see all 20 clubs agreeing to that and crowning Liverpool as Champions, with playoffs for the Euro places in the summer. The EPL would then get sued by the EFL for not allowing promotion, but that would only cost a few hundred million - which in the scheme of things is not very much if the TV companies agree to the idea. pete 318 Posted March 13, 2020 Season ticket sales and income is only a drop in the bucket when considering PL revenue. Will be of no significant effect to our finances as 20K already signed up. duke63 542 Posted March 13, 2020 I believe PL rules state that if there are no matches for 60 days then the season is null and void. I suspect that might well happen now. I can't see how they can delay the end of season til the summer, as the new season would start as soon as this one ends. It would be impossible to plan for that.
