South Korea is indeed doing those things. Is any one else? And if not why not? They have shown that it can be done without shutting down their entire economy.

North Korea of course is doing even better, no needs for tests as NOBODY is infected there.

Any cruises going to North Korea🤔

Maybe this is the solution to Coronovirus that President Trump and Supreme Leader Kim can agree on. Offer North Korea’s as an isolation country. “ Send us your patients and lots of money and we will take proper care of them “

Interesting graph from the EDP today showing the various flu outbreaks in the UK in the last century and the number of deaths. While Covid-19 isnt your typical flu outbreak, and also we are still at very early stage in this outbreak, it does show how much worse, in terms of deaths anyway, those flu outbreaks were in comparison to Covid-19 so far.

True but SO FAR being a critical qualifier. We just don't know is the current status. A lack of preparation or blowing this off as being inconsequential will certainly kill people. On the other hand the financial markets always look for an excuse to be volatile, it's how the traders make their money after all. It may be best to shut them all down for a while, or put other constraints on market swings.

The latest is not good news. Dr Campbell thinks most of us will get it over the next few weeks.

Lets hope its the mild form.

Young man diagnosed in Truro. Authorities will not disclose where he is exactly from. I believe the authorities could offer an outline of his activities in the last couple of weeks. We are also being told about self isolation but how can they hope to gain accurate figures if people decide this is a great opportunity to get a fortnight off on sick pay.

In accordance with official advice on this topic it is irresponsible to spread non official souce information on social media.

The person would be more convincing if they knew how you should clean a mobile phone and was  in fact a medical doctor. This is Someone using the Coronavirus to make money from you tube hits.and should be ignored. They do not have direct access to data and are not an expert in the subject or medical data modelling. They are just speculating and it is highly irresponsible to share and should be deleted. Even Boris has recognised that this is too important to be a political game and we should be guided by experts on this one. People really should educate themselves on the official expert view on this one. Proliferating right wing extremist views is bad enough but this is going beyond. Please educate yourself.

I have a suspicion that Covid-19 coupled with the Presidentual elections may cause a sea change shift in the Yanks views on their dysfunctional health non-system. Money maybe won't protect you and insurance companies may start to look pretty sick too.

Perhaps, but it would probably need European 'socialised healthcare' to be seen to work much better.

Exactly the point I was making about league and cup games completing the season behind closed doors. I dont think it will be possible.

Italy went from 3 cases to thousands in ten days. The rest of Europe can't be far behind.

Trying to prevent panic and balancing health and the economy will be next to impossible without introducing similar methods to China.

The Government generally have done a pretty good job, leaning heavily on advice from public heath advisors.

This is the easy bit though!

Infectious diseases don't care if you have health insurance or not. Those without will clog up hospital ICUs just like those with health insurance will clog up hospital ICUs. We are all in this together. Unfortunately the current Trump Administration is still in "dear leader" mode.

You either lick his boots or your issue is ignored. This trip to the CDC was announced, then announced it would not happen because the President didn't want to disturb their work, then announced again when it was revealed the reason for it being cancelled was one of the CDC staff was tested for Coronovirus, but it proved to be negative. So OK for the photo op.

I like dabbling with figures to Ricardo. Maybe we are in for a long haul with this virus. But consider..even if we average 1000 cases a day to reach 80.000 as China have had, that will take the best part of 3 months...and at that point equate to 1% of the population of London. Yes its going to nasty with a big haul of cases but really...right now we just dont know how bad or how many...its all guesstimates.

And they are sending out "alternative facts" spin mistress Kelly-Anne Conway to lie as usual. Here she is telling Fox the President didn't say what he clearly did, (and lying about the deficit which was reduced under Obama and exploded under Trump) and here she is attacking journalists questioning the availability of Coronovirus test kits. (This is your future too if you allow Boris and Cummings to get away with all of their lies...)

The EXPERTS are saying 60-80 percent of the population will get it. Most will get a very mild form. Its the number needing hospitalisation that is the problem.

It's an exponential increase not linear without drastic intervention as in China.

1 to 2 to 4  to 8 to 16 etc. The R0 is something like 2 to 4 if that's the right phrase.

The odds are that most of us will get it within a few months.

Criticize China all you like but once they realized what they were up against they acted. For Boris he seems reactive not proactive and yes Trump is stuck in 'America First' and petty flag waving. The virus will have him/them both for tea.

The Channel 4 piece is absolutely fine. This is a person with relevant experience and qualifications. from a credible news organisation. The vested interest is clearly disclosed. The views are challenged. The views are stated by reference to the WHO and the words are carefully weighted. I have never said that this is not serious and it is scurrilous to suggest so

posting videos Through suggesting that you should damage phones with abrasive cleaners and that everyone will get this from an you tuber without relevant experience and qualifications is irresponsible. I agree with the CMO that social media should be used responsible

people on other countries die from wars. Disease and hunger all the time without a single post of concern from individuals on here  And yet they get very concerned about a disease where the average age of people dying in Italy is 81 in a country where the average age of death was 67 not so long ago  it appears that there are s lot of Poole who are concerned when an issue impacts them but not other people.

The channel 4 piece notes that an issue is the  younger people are likely to take less action as it is likely not to impact them directly  The young would show more concern if more concern was shown for their issues rather than dismissing them such as denying climate change. it might be time for people to reflect and consider some enlightened self interest and show more concern for other people and then they are more likely to show concern for you

and posting xenophobic and islamophobic views and campaigning against expert views on an ongoing basis when the importance of experts could. never to be clearer is a lot worse than pathetic. Again reflect and show some enlightened self interest by showing more empathy to other groups if you want them to be concerned for you.

The experts are not saying that we will all get it. They are saying that potentially potentially between 30 to 80pc depending on how it develops and action taken. could potentially get it at some point. They are pointing out  a worst case scenario. Another scenario is that it Regresses as the weather improves. People would be wise to watch and listen to what is actually being said.

The UK has indicated that they will not go as far as China. UK is far more Individualistic society as demonstrated by the Sod you we won attitude of UK society.

Boris has been pretty much following the line advised by Public Health England,, that’s not an unreasonable  position to take. He was slow to be seen to get personally involved. UK government generally has been praised for the way it is handling things. The politicians need a scapegoat for when the sh!t hits the fan.

Such leadership qualities. At least Johnson had the good grace to STFU and let the experts do the talking, (4 years too late.)

"Donald Trump used a freewheeling press conference on Friday, intended to provide updates on the coronavirus, as an opportunity to attack Democrats, praise his own intelligence, lash out at CNN and spread false and misleading information about the status of the outbreak, as a slew of new cases were confirmed aboard a cruise ship off the California coast."

Uk govt sensibly following expert advice for once. Running down NHS and losing EU doctors and nurses not looking so good.

Supermarkets already restocked. Loads of delivery services all with plenty of availability. Lots of people already stocked up who will now return to regular purchasing behaviour. As demonstrated by the shift from the high street to online there as a lot of delivery capacity which could be switched from non food to food.   As far as I know these services are not reliant on the elderly and there is also lots of gig labour.

I suspect the world will not stop for 18 months until auch time vaccine available which are already being tested thanks to Chinese rapid research. and the world will go on with some potentially significant short term disruption  no doubt but there was a large group of people who were not concerned about disrupting the UK economy and said everything will be fine so I’m sure if they are right there is no need to be concerned now.

Yes, R0 is the right term. ..But 2-4 is low, by comparison for measles it is something around 14-16, old classics like whooping cough will be more than 4.

At below  1 the disease burns itself out as it spreads from one person to an average of less than 1.

With numbers like this the disease could be made extinct, particularly if it is slowed by dry warm weather and a vaccine is ready before next winter.
