In fact, I just checked my postings on another BB and I made that statement on 23rd January. Edited February 11, 2020 by paul moy

Van wink 2,994 Posted February 13, 2020 (edited) Looks like they have changed the definition of the disease to include those with a clinical diagnosis, which is what they should have been doing all the while, they are still defining fatalities in the same way though😉 242 deaths in one province yesterday, poor people, must be horrendous in those provinces with a high incidence. Medical services overwhelmed in that province. Hopefully the rest of the world is better prepared. Saw a report on YouTube saying other Chinese provinces are quickly building isolation centres. Let's hope they can contain it. Why the WHO haven't declared a pandemic, I can't quite fathom.

There was a suggestion early on of undue pressure from the Chinese on the WHO, I would be hugely disappointed if that were the case, and suspect it’s not true. Herman 9,758 Posted February 14, 2020 I know I haven't been worrying overtly about this but when you hear about people flying in back from the East, where everyone is wearing facemasks, and then casually walk through airports, take tubes and buses etc. I do have a bit of a second thought. Think about what you are doing for goodness sakes.

Oh Dear! WHO denies China made it play down coronavirus crisis First death in Europe as British cases sent home from hospital new Andrew Gregory Saturday February 15 2020, 6.00pm GMT, The Sunday Times The World Health Organization denies being influenced by China in its decision not to immediately declare a global health emergency JOHN MOORE/GETTY IMAGES The World Health Organisation faces criticism over its “delayed” response to the new coronavirus, amid questions over its relationship with China. The UN agency declared a global health emergency only on January 30, by which time the virus had spread well beyond China. The declaration reversed the WHO’s decision seven days earlier when it stopped short of such an announcement. Public health experts suspect that before the meeting on January 23 China tried to play down the crisis and urged the agency not to designate it a “public health emergency of international concern”. The WHO denies being influenced by China. The delay had ramifications, experts said, because some countries, especially in poorer parts of the world, will prepare for outbreaks only once the WHO advises them to do so. Dr John Ashton, one of the UK’s leading public health specialists, said the WHO “failed to declare a global public health emergency in a timely way”. The number infected has since jumped to more than 66,000, while deaths have climbed above 1,500. The virus has spread to five continents. The agency says it did not initially declare a global emergency largely because there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission outside China. But Ashton, the former director of public health for northwest England, said the WHO’s “vacillation” and “delay” was partly to blame for the fact that the world faces “potentially a pandemic that could reach into all corners of the globe, threatening the lives of millions”. China has become a key strategic partner of the WHO and its financial backing could be key to the agency’s future sustainability. America, the WHO’s top donor, said last week it wants to cut its contribution to the agency by 53%.

Van wink 2,994 Posted February 21, 2020 (edited) A useful update on the situation in China https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/21/coronavirus-kills-wuhan-doctor-hundreds-infected-china-prisons The risk when the virus gets into a more closed environment such as a prison, cruise ship, care facility seem very high. Particularly worrying if those settings accommodate vulnerable people. Could swiftly give respite to the long term care crisis or overcrowded prisons!!
