Wuhan coronavirus

Lots of people suggesting that the death toll is far worse than the official Chinese figures. At the moment the figures suggest it’s not as bad as SARS, but if the figures are being fudged that’s very worrying.

Still in the acceleration stage, much more contagious than SARS by the look of things.

I spent 3 weeks in China in the summer. Couldn't pay me enough to go back. Great wall was immense but everything else was rubbish. Horrible selfish culture of pushing, shoving and barging everywhere - my 3 year old was knocked to the floor by some ignorant c*** who didn't even look to see what he barged into - he was pushed to the floor himself milli-seconds later and I made sure he understood why. Everybody spits, everywhere, including upmarket restaurants. Everywhere stinks to high heaven of either sewage or unidentifiable meat being boiled. The whole culture is just grim.

A relative is the regional manager for China of a multi-billion dollar company - based in Shanghai. He regularly sends pictures through from various business dinners where they've been served bat soup and similar (obviously he is selective about what he partakes in). Point being - this isn't a problem of China's poor - this is a probelm of Chinese society as a whole.

I went to Carrefour in Shanghai a couple of times (we were staying with him and his family whilst in Shanghai so this was a supermarket generally servicing the big gated ex-pat community). Tanks full of live fish/frogs/prawns/lobsters/crabs etc. All alive and healthy looking on the Wednesday when I went in. On Saturday, all the prawns were dead in a pile at the bottom of the tank, all the crabs were dead in the basket, half the fish were dead in the tank with the live ones still swimming around in there. There were 3 frogs left in the tank and 2 of them were dead but left in with the living one. Basic hygiene standards just not being met, and this was a supermarket in a posh area of Shanghai - at a bbq at my relatives house were several others who lived on the estate including the CFO of Royal Caribbean cruises so you get a picture of what kind of area this is in. I'd hate to think what the standards are at the wet markets serving the poorer communities.

I am totally unsurprised at this outbreak of disease and if anything, I'm shocked it hasn't happened sooner. China needs to have a major reset of the entire way their culture looks at food or it won't be the last of these outbreaks.

EDIT - Right on cue - major outbreak of Bird Flu too https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-02/china-culls-18-000-chickens-after-h5n1-bird-flu-cases-in-hunan

Major countries now beginning to close down flights from China. They dont do this if its just a touch of the flu.

The telling thing is that the number of deaths is just below the number confirmed recovered,  305 to 348  , so the death rate could be around 40% of those in hospital rather than the 2% for SARS. Strange but true !!

BBC are doing a careful job not to cause alarm, but an airborne virus that has the ability to cross the species barrier is a grave threat to human health. The reaction of the Chinese government in basically putting whole cities into quarantine suggests we are dealing with a very serious problem here.

Indications this morning that the virus may be capable of crossing the placenta, if that is the case there are massive implications.

If you go on twitter, youtube etc there are videos of what is going on that are incredibly alarming, such as people being locked away, barred up in buildings with apparently no hope of ever exiting and stacks of bodies in mortuaries, crematoria  and ambulances.

There clearly must be a hell of a lot more deaths than the authorities are letting on.

The world has been very complacent IMO especially with still allowing many flights for Chinese to continue to spread the deadly virus.

Sounds like the NHS under the Tories

There is no sign of this being contained. China is shutting down whole Cities in their main industrial areas. It is bound to adversly affect the global supply chain.

Tired of being an ill-informed, armchair expert on all things Brexit...this could well be for you, from the Daily Mash. 😂

The six most pointless ways to panic about the coronavirus

THE coronavirus is on the other side of the world and experts are confident it will not affect you. So how are you losing your sh*t about it?

Spreading rumours

Your local Facebook Swap & Meet group is the ideal place to say you saw somebody coughing who ‘didn’t look like they were from round here’. The rumour will go round your estate faster than any virus and give spying on your neighbours an extra thrill.

Wearing a facemask

Being the only person on your bus or train wearing a facemask lets other passengers know you’re taking the threat of a pandemic seriously. Also it might make them think you’re infected, and you’ll get a seat to yourself.

Refusing to drink Corona

Hitting the bar tonight? Become instantly outraged if anyone offers to buy you a Corona, slamming them for being ‘irresponsible’. If people snigger, tell them ‘It’s just not worth the risk’ like an idiot. You can also freak out if ‘Rhythm of the Night’ by 90s dance act Corona comes on, though this is less likely.

Throwing away a Tesco Sweet & Sour Chinese Chicken Meal for One

It may have been made on an industrial estate in Doncaster and be unrecognisable to any Chinese person as their own cuisine, but you can’t be too careful. Have a nice safe cup of tea, imported from the Hubei province of China, instead.

Reading up on symptoms

Watch out for the symptoms of the coronavirus, which include a runny nose, cough, sore throat and headache, then convince yourself you’ve got it even though these are also symptoms of living in Britain in January.

Putting your home on lockdown

Like Wuhan, your home is on lockdown this weekend. All unnecessary travel is banned and your family need to get their papers stamped to visit the bathroom. Watch something hysteria-inducing on Netflix and tape over the gaps in the windows.

The real death rate is likely very low. Far more people are infected with either unrecorded mild or no symptoms than the 2% or so of reported cases.

That said, I'm sure it's very difficult to stop it spreading and eventually it will also be here and yes most of us will catch it like the related common cold. Let's hope it doesn't mutate to something worse.

The trick is to slow its spread until the summer and hopefully a vaccine as currently we have no immunity... unlike colds and flu.

In this endeavour one can only praise the Chinese for their efforts. Can you imagine us locking down Norwich let alone London?

"In this endeavour one can only praise the Chinese for their efforts."  You maybe right, or in the alternative they had little choice after trying to hush up the whistle blowers and allowing the virus time to become established in the local population and then spread.

Thats the whole point, the fact that so many people are asymptomatic gives the virus a better opportunity to spread.

Yes so the death rate is lower.. probably 《 1%. It will still kill lots of people though.. same as flu.

It certainly will. A successful virus will typically have a very high rate of asymptomatic carriers.

Coming back to China, if you knew then what you know now would you act any differently? The very very last thing you wanted to do at the start was cause a panic with everybody fleeing like an exodus in all sorts of directions in a blind panic ... rapidly spreading the virus both nationally and globally.

I suspect some tough decisions have been taken for the greater good.

Yes of course, with hindsight the travel ban would have been implemented much sooner to prevent the spread of infection.
