Chris Sutton was a defender who someone thought might be quite good in attack and even after he became a striker, still filled in as a defender on occasion.

I know BV is a troll but there is a certain amount of truth in his post. Yes, we can claim bad luck on the injury front but there can be no denying that central defence has been a constant weakness during our recent tenures in the Premier League.

I fail to see how the example of the boy Allcock absolves the Socialists of all the mistakes they have repeated, especially in defence, over a 23 year period. Of course, ultimately, it is supporters who are to blame because they want football to be played the "Norwich Way" which has always had scant regard for defending. Blame John Bond. Managers like to play how they themselves once played which in his case was a player who couldn't tackle, couldn't head, but could deliver the sweetest ball on a sixpence. These are the sort of players Norwich fans like, hence Crook et al.

It is ironic you point to those seasons in the mid-1960s. Well, Norwich were building solid foundations that led to promotion under Saunders in 1972 with Keelan, Stringer and Forbes in the 3 key defensive positions. Watling, Saunders, Forbes and Stringer were all on the same wavelength. The Socialists have been on an entirely different wavelength, prompted by a fan base that has the wrong footballing philosophy.

Verdict (yet again): Supporters get board they deserve.

I remember Ron Saunders putting Ted Payne up front. I think he was trying to make a point rather than any tactic.

 

Most bizarre game I have ever seen. Lost 3-2 and 4 or maybe all 5 were own goals. Thanks for reminding me that a somewhat bewildered Ted Payne spent the last 15 minutes playing up front. For those of you who never saw Ted he was a bit like Danny Mills but far less talented. But to be fair he was at least a decent bloke....
