Tettey in defence, Amadou in midfield

Recommended Posts

With injuries continuing and the defeats stacking up, we've looked more solid with tettey partnering godfrey.

Anyone fancy tettey in defence, with Amadou being released into his strangest midfield role?

Hardly, Tetty is not a centre half. Proved that yesterday, I like Tetty but he should not be asked to play that role. Would rather see a centre half from the U23`s come in. Lets hope Zimmerman is back soon, we need him so bad.

I don't think Alex proved anything of the sort yesterday. Why do you say that?

Brighton didn't really look like scoring for much of the game because we did cover the defence and Jamal and Max tempered some of their runs. But we still lost two nil.

Personally I thought it was because we did change our tactics and just didn't give them any concern at the back. Too often Emi was left to do it on his own.

Until we get one of the injured CB's back, then I would prefer us to risk it defending and try and get back to our attacking flair.

Alex struggled at centre half, not gonna knock him too much cos I like the guy but if you were there yesterday it was plain to see. Just think it`s poor that we are asking him to play that role when he is clearly better used elsewhere.

Trouble is it may have been have been plain for you to see, but I've seen too many examples of players performances looking completely different to different people. Are you sure you're not just picking up on one or two moments (his header onto the net perhaps) & not his overall display?

I watched on a stream (gives a pretty good wide field view in my opinion) & he looked OK - not perfect, but probably as good as Ibrahim has been - & that's the question; would Amadou offer greater dynamism in midfield than Tettey, while Tettey is equivalent to him as a CD? If so we'd gain a bit.

We'd all rather have Christoph back, but he isn't, so we have to do the best we can with players available; I have to say I do wonder if Byram might make a decent CB (I think he's played there in the past), but Farke will know better than any of us.

Perhaps you could give some concrete examples of Alex's shortcomings at CB compared to Ibrahim's?

Alex never looked comfortable yesterday, not a great header of the ball, didn`t look at ease with the short balls from Krul, wayward clearances, short of pace. For me it`s horses for courses, play people in their positions, Amadou came with experience of playing centre back so for me you play him there if fit enough, otherwise at least a recognised centre back from the U23`s. Again I`m not having a go at Alex, I think he`s a great pro for us and I know if you asked him to play left wing for us he would, but it doesn`t mean he will do a good job there. Oh, I forgot to mention nearly scoring an own goal, thanks for reminding me!!

Centre Back is such a key position and the Premier League is a harsh place for learning on the job where you are exposed to a very high quality of opposition players.  Both Tettey and Amadou have given their best shot and made a decent effort but it clearly doesnt suit their natural strengths and weaknesses are quickly exposed at this level. It is what it is. On balance Amadou looked more comfortable at CB than Tettey but its a big ask to expect he would be as reliable and consistent in that position as (say) Zimmerman.

Unfortunately I fear we are still several weeks away from seeing Zimmerman back and up to speed.

Yes. We need to start getting Amadou up to speed in his midfield role. I would have thought he'll need a few games to get used to the additional running required and develop the distribution aspect of his game.

Here's a challenge.

Given we haven't picked up owt over past few matches, I think it has turned into a missed opportunity to blood a youngster who is a specialist centre half.  By now they would have learnt enough to be at or close to a level required for EPL, we wouldn't have done any worse as far as results is concerned (goal difference another thing but not sure its gonna matter).

Thoughts?

The reality is we still have injuries. There's no point saying Tettey didn't look any good in defence, as we're currently jiggling between two central midfielders playing as makeshift central defenders. And Neither Zimm, Hanley or close will be available in the next few weeks

The question is whether any of our U23's are anywhere near a baptism of fire that is the Premiership? Famewo has been on the bench a few times, but is he ready for a starting berth.

I'm surprised we haven't seen Byram or Lewis brought into central defence rather than Tettey or Amadou, but my feeling is we looked more solid against Bournmouth and also Brighton with him in defence, and as someone else said, would Amadou give us more athleticism and protection by playing in his more suited midfield role, especially with Trybull alongside

As things stand we don't have many options!

Time for Adam Idah to play? He is strong, scores goals and could be the bite we need up front with Pukki ?

Certainly would start with Mario once fit.

Thought we missed Cantwell in the final third more than anyone else. No one drifted and offered link up with Buendia like Cantwell does.
