That's An Absolutely Superb Point

Recommended Posts

After the horror show of the Villa game and our well publicised defensive frailties that's a superb point. When Godfrey went off I thought that a Bournemouth win was inevitable, but in fact we upped our game and looked the team most likely to win it.

Massive performances from Amadou and Tettey with Lewis and McLean also very impressive.

Agree. And have we stumbled upon our best central defensive partnership? 😂

It's almost certainly the best central defensive partnership available to us at the moment........... (hoping Godfrey makes a quick recovery).

First away point and first clean sheet - great stuff.

There is a little part of me that thinks we could have gone one better - we were the best team 60mins onwards.

This is what can happen when you don't throw a game away first half but build into it.

Agree wholeheartedly with the OP.

Bournemouth didn't play well at all, but Amadou and Tettey in particular were fantastic and dealt with everything. Had Bournemouth had a physical centre forward to challenge them it could've been a different story, but against teams who only have smaller attackers they could be ok until the specialist centre backs return.

Hopefully further evidence today that DF is a quick learner and knows how to make the most out of international breaks. Sounds like the lads took a more 'pragmatic' approach to proceedings today. An important point indeed and the elusive clean sheet, away from home too. Krul, Tettey, Trybull and Onel being available obviously good for confidence, options, experience & flexibility. We do seem to be more effective against the "footballing" teams. Interesting that Srbeny got the nod ahead of Marco too - perhaps Trybull in for Godfrey altered the plan somewhat.

Well done to the lads and bring on Manure!

Also shows that being a bit more defensive doesn't mean having to totally throw out our style of play as some seemed to think.

This. Whenever I or others have suggested that we need to tighten up, there seems to be an underlying assumption from some that it means abandoning the 'project' and playing a more direct game with longer passes and aerial balls into the box. It doesn't.

fantastic performances from a number of players, not least Amadou and Tettey at the back.

My MoM would have to be McLean. He looked comfortable and played some nice balls through the lines. Onel looking good too!

Great to get the clean sheet, but the lads can count themselves unlucky not to get the 3 points. But I think today showed what a difference having Krul between the sticks is, not to mention the return of the seasoned powerhouse Tettey. For anyone who thinks Hernandez doesn’t make a difference, he has a dynamic that no one else in the team has. Got to say we saw a far more solid balanced team today, I didn’t think Bmth were any great shakes at all but I feel that was down to us rather than them.

Also shows how much easier it is to be more defensive if you have defensively minded players available to you.

Which we didnt have in our recent games. And Farke reiterated that point pretty much every interview...some still didnt get that.

a noticble difference todays was players qilling to 'hoof it clear' of the defence

yes there is a good chance of the opposition winning th ball, but that is well clear of our goal, not as previous hwere too much tippity tap could see the ball lost inside of close to the 18 yard box

otherwise we were lucky that Bournemouth were tired, jaded, lacklustre and couln not get going, let down by a quiet Dean Court, missing a coule of platers, were off form.... etc

myself I felt we dealt with them well and could have won it, so we can take heart that we still have the ability to bounce back and more imprtantly able adapt when injuries require

bring on the northern monkeys

So what did we do differently in order to "tighten up". Were there new tactics or was it due to the return of decent holding midfielders?

Tettey's the key for me. Hopefully when we have some defenders fit Amadou can be as good as Tetts.

Tettey makes so much difference. Its no coincidence that every manager/Coach that we have had over the time that Alex has been at the club put him in the starting line up when he is fit.Still a few more miles left in Alex yet.

The 'resting' of Steipermann also significant in allowing a more compact 3 ahead of the back 4.....now Farke has broken rank in that , the Steipermann role is crying out for Vrancic when he comes back...

Yeah the midfield played with much more of a 'group' feel I thought. Also it was noticeable that when we attacked at least one of Tettey or the fullbacks hung back so weren't so exposed to a counter attack.

The only defensive change was having Tettey in. Sure that helps but you could easily still ask a fullback to be a bit more cautious or ask one of your central midfielders to hold back when the team attacks. It isn't purely personnel

Well, you can ask all you like but throughout a game a players natural instinct will kick in at some point. Which is why having a defensive option in midfield makes such a critical difference. We've seen it proven now yet again.

I also thought having McLean who offers more natural defensive ability than Stiepermann allowed us to keep our shape better. Unfortunately it was at the cost of creating where we did create less.

Also after such a big home loss the natural instinct of players is to be a little more cautious.

I didn't see the game but Webber did hint in his Radio 5 Live interview on Thursday that tweaks would be made this week in light of the Villa performance. As has been mentioned, away from home it's important you haven't lost the game before you try and win. Sounds like we were solid today and that is very encouraging and something we can build on. No reason why we can't adopt that attitude at home either.

I'm one of those who always think a point away from home is a great result in this division, but I have to say I feel a little disappointed as I thought Bournemouth were there for the taking today. We certainly did not make the most of the opportunities we had, but given the extra injuries and makeshift centre back pairing today I think we can be proud of the players' performance and the overall result today.

A very useful point today and of course with hindsight slightly disappointed it wasn't three.

Most of us must have thought we were goners when Godfrey limped off but for some reason we played better after he was subbed.

Hernandez looked as though he'll skin a few players this season. Let's hope he doesn't make too much of a habit of falling down stairs.

We took out our 'number ten' to put in an anchorman. Obviously Leitner played a bit further forward to compensate but any midfield that has Tettey in it instead of Stiepermann will be 'tighter'.

I also noticed that Lewis seemed to be pushing forward a little less and even the wide players seemed to be protecting the full backs more than usual.

It was definitely tighter.

Re: defence, clearly having Tettey back made a big difference, but the guy doing live updates also suggested that Aarons and Lewis weren’t bombing forward as much as usual; being tighter doesn’t necessarily mean being defensive, it is often small tweaks needed.
