Putting Our First Few Games in Perspective

Recommended Posts

1st game away to Liverpool:  After playing us Liverpool have won all of their next 5 League games.

2nd game at home to Newcastle: After losing away to us Newcastle won their next away game at Spurs.

3rd game at home to Chelsea: After beating us Chelsea won their next away game at Wolves 5-2.

4th game away to West Ham: After beating us 2-0 West Ham won their next home game 2-0 against Man Utd.

5th game at home to Man City: After losing to us Man City won their next League game 8-0.

Not totally sure what to make of this except that it proves we've had a pretty tough set of opening fixtures and that overall we've done okay in them. Oh - and perhaps worth having a bet on Burnley in their next home game 🙂

Think this shows just how competitive this league is. Games like Burnley and West Ham away are far from easy and every point, especially away from home, is hard to win. Just ask Man City for proof of that! West Ham in particular are a much tougher prospect this season and our result against them doesn't look so shabby now they have produced exactly the same score against United

It really does need putting in perspective. We are averaging a point a game after a very tough start on paper and we have home games against teams near the bottom still to come.

What this shows is just how tough a season it's going to be and surviving (which I think we will - just) will be a top achievement. Perhaps a little bit more realism is needed. Another very tough game coming up!

Six points from six games is a good return, let's not forget that. One point per game is generally enough to keep a club up, and considering we've played three of the 'big six' including the two that will more than likely end up miles ahead of the rest, as well as two tough away games, then we've done alright.

Another point to make looking at the Premier League as a whole is that a lot of these results go to show how inconsistent the league is. I've seen numerous comments on this forum about how such and a such a team played dreadfully in their last game and we should have no problems finishing above them, only for said team to go and pull off a spectacular result the next week (and we've done that ourselves with a phenomenal win against Man City sandwiched between two poor displays against West Ham and Burnley).

We're 16th but only two points behind 7th. The inconsistency of so many of the teams means that there are probably nine or ten teams who could realistically go down this season and there is no team who are certainties to go down, compared to last season when Huddersfield and Cardiff were always looking likely and Fulham and quickly joined them. It's going to be a very interesting relegation battle this season and it could involve nearly half the division.

Is that putting it into perspective?

Or is it putting a positive spin on it?  I'm genuinely not feeling negative about our start at all by the way but;

Liverpool are Liverpool.

Newcastle not won since beating Spurs.

Chelsea drew at home to Sheff U, with Leicester and tonked by Utd.

West Ham couldn't beat Villa or Watford

Man City are Man City

It was only Burnley's second win of the season.

What it is clear is that there is no yardstick as of yet.

West Ham are unbeaten since losing to Man City on the opening day (and they did beat Watford).

Burnley at home are completely different to Burnley away. The only home game they've failed to win was against Liverpool.

We beat Newcastle anyway so there's no case to answer.

We could go in circles forever like this!

This^^^

Still too early in the season. Anything is still on and any result is possible in any game, so no-one can predict anything with any degree of certainty.

Just enjoy it week to week - don't take losses too much to heart and don't get carried away with wins, however spectacular.

Burnley was a tough place, very steep stands on two sides and crowd very close to pitch - and the Burnley fans were excellent. No disgrace then to lose to them, just a kick up the backside after the euphoria of last week.

Anything is still possible.

I find it impossible to argue with your assertion that 'Liverpool are Liverpool' and 'Man City are Man City'. 😉

Still early days as you say.

I think this division is becoming more polarised than ever. And I think that early form, yes it is early I know, indicates that 38 points may not be enough this year. The bottom, if that is the right perspective, of this division, looks to be a good half of the teams and they are looking likely to capable of beating each other.

It mat be too early but if we can get through this awful injury crisis and end up with a point a game by Christmas then we have as good a chance as anyone of staying up.

Very hard to argue with that Thirsty.

West Ham performance certainly wasn't as bad a some made out. We were in the first 20 minutes and the game changed dramtically after Zimmermans injury.

That said, we will have to find other ways to play through , or around, the early high press. We apparently struggled early on against Burnley (first game I have not attended so cant comment) , definitely did against Liverpool , and the beginning of the second half against Chelsea. Teams that didn't press us (Newcastle and bizarrely Man City early on) we have looked OK against. Similarly when Liverpool lifted off a bit.

We need to nick points away from home. If we don't then many of our home games become "must win" with all the pressure that comes with it. Nice to get a point at Palarse , would take the pressure off Villa a bit.
