FAO PUPs

Recommended Posts

For some time I've been aware that each week's opening post is too bulky and takes a lot of scrolling through a huge amount of text on the smaller screens we use these days. I've had some help and we came up with an idea that we have a post at the top of the board to explain Ray's Funds and also display Ray's signature and the totals that I would update as necessary. Then I can streamline each weeks opening post to include the PUPs in charge, current news and rotas etc.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. The history of Rays Funds and particularly Ray's signature are massively important to me. The amount of text shows how successful we have been over such a long period of time. If for any reason we can't keep that at the top of the board then I will make no changes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the proposed post. (Tomorrow I will post a more streamlined opening post to help you all decide.) : -

Here’s an explanation of RAYS FUNDS otherwise known as the PUPs, supported by our generous sponsors, Turner European Consulting and Kare Plus.

These threads were set up by my good friend, top man and top poster Ray Ducker (Arrdee) to raise money for the Norwich City Academy. There’s a new thread every week where Pink Un Pickers (PUPs) from all over the world unite to post their predictions from the weekends football fixtures. As from August 2013 we have been raising money for the Community Sports Foundation. Since we began you wonderful PUPs have raised over £13,000 which is a fantastic amount from an online football forum. I honestly believe this is the best online football forum in the world.

With the help of the Community Sports Foundation, which does wonderful work in Norfolk, especially with the disadvantaged, the money we raise goes specifically to their Downs Syndrome football team. Anyone who has seen the team in action will know what a worthwhile cause this is.

Our last presentation in April 2013

There are two ways of taking part, and you can do either or preferably both. Every week in the season there is a £10 accumulator bet, with six matches chosen by an individual PUP, based on the suggestions made up until the Friday.

This needs 40 tenners, which can be sent via paypal to canaryeddie@aol.com. Thanks to everyone who has sent me a tenner for this season, I really appreciate your support. But if you’re looking at this now and wondering about joining this season, just jump in and take part. It’s not pay to play.

Matches can come from all over the world. They just need to be played on the Saturday, Sunday or Monday that weekend, and for odds to be available on William Hill or Bet365.

The second bet is for Norwich City weekend matches, with another individual PUP having £10 to split anyway they want on all sorts of possible happenings. This is not pay to play because the money comes from our generous benefactor PUPanon.

There is one change this season, given that we are in the Premier League, with PUPanon having added £3 for an automatic negative option of £2 for City to lose and £1 for the draw. The remaining tenner works as in previous seasons, where the picker has a totally free reign to pick their own options of negative/positive picks. Thanks PUPanon for this extra stake, your continued support of this part of Ray’s Funds is really appreciated by me and all our PUPs.

A massive thank-you to the Pink Un posters who send me pledges and donations, and to our sponsors, Turner European Consulting and Kare Plus. This money all goes straight into the presentation pot, and the The CSF and our DS boys and girls really appreciate this support. For more information on our sponsors have a look at their websites:

Turner European Consulting “Specialising in rescuing companies and bringing them back to profitability”

http://www.turnereuropeanconsulting.com/

Kare Plus “Delivering outstanding nursing, care and support to local communities, nationally”

https://www.kareplus.co.uk/norwich/

Extra money for the CSF and the DS team has come from some side bets:

Both Teams To Score bets which are placed on international weekends and sponsored by the PUP known as BTTSanon - £188.

The 2019 spring special. KiwiScot, Fenway Frank, Herman, Til1010 - £41.14.

In honour and remembrance of much loved PUP Chellecity, £431 (of which £50 was donated to SarcomaUK), and £55 to Prostate Cancer UK with Keelansgrandad.

And of course pledges and donations which have raised £5,770

Overall we PUPS have raised £13,428 since we began, with £1,519 already in the pot for the next presentation.

Feel free to ask questions if you’re not sure whether to join in. Myself or other PUPs will be glad to help. More information can be found on:

Well you asked.

Straight off the bat Nutty and not to be a downer, but by the top of the board are you talking about having a permanent sticky on the top of the main discussion forum? They has been recent hostility on the forum to non-football threads and while this is a football thread of course and for charity there could be issue.

I do like the idea though, but isn't what you've posted much more text than usual? Tbh it has always been a mammoth read, but I looked at lasts week post and it seemed fine although I have become used to it.  At the beginning I was like, wtf is going on, but then the little nuances can be very hard to explain briefly. I think the basics of pick a team to win and a bet for the norwich match is simple, but the rest and the unwritten rules...I mean it took me ages to try and be concise coming up with a guide to the profitability so maybe less is more?

One idea. You can insert code into these posts although I've never done it, but there may be something there in that. You could for example hide some text unless it was clicked upon(like the rules/how it works)

Lastly how important is all the part between "Extra money for the CSF and the DS team has come from some side bets: " and the main signatures?  Because you could reduce some bulk there.

  • Could you intergrate that into the main signature or something to reduce the bulk?
  • Maybe bulletpoint it
  • or ident it? Wow you can't hit tab to ident on this forum, but you can hit centre the text.
  • The size of the line spacing is a pain on this forum and some parts of your post really suffer because of it, but if you copy and paste from a text file to reduce the line spacing. Then change the text size to the size 14 the forum uses like so...

Line 1

Line 2 - - Becomes

Line 2

Sorry to be a pain Nutty.

You're not a pain buddy. I appreciate your comments. Especially the suggestions. Between us all we may come to a solution whether that be the old way or new.🙃

Sorry to be contrary to @KiwiScot, but I think pinning the post is a great idea. The PUPs thread is the best thing on this board, and I think keeping it front and centre is really important. I can't imagine @Pete Raven would object? It's not ''off-topic', as it's raising money for an NCFC community project.

I agree with FTW. I am sure no-one would object.to that as a sticky. I take Kiwi's point that it is a long read but then you only have to read that once to understand what the fund is all about. Then if you're hooked on the idea of taking part the weekly post on a Wednesday will be a very much shorter affair.

I think it's a good idea too. We'll still get a good thread every week with the news and weekly information, but will have the PUPS reference there for all to see all the time.   I would suggest that the league table of pups could be added to that pinned post each week, then the PUPS league table can be followed chronologically week by week and progress (or otherwise) of PUPS pickers tracked more easily.

I agree its too long to read & I'm guessing a lot of people don't read it all & just pop on & do their picks as the majority of the pups don't post on here other than to do picks

Why not ask Pete if it could have its own  section so you'd have

Main Discussion

Non Football Topics

Problem is there is not a lot of posting on the other board. So you'd have to post on the main board every so often to try and tempt new people.

This. I'd definitely keep it pinned to the top of the main NCFC discussion board. Our discussions on the PUPs threads do more good for the club and the community than all the other threads combined.

I think this is the total opposite of what we are trying to do. PUPs isn't exclusive, it doesn't belong to me or the regular contributors, it belongs to everyone who uses this forum. Some don't have time to post every week so dip in and out and that's fine. Some never put a weekly pick in but support the pledges and other things this forum does. Pledge threads and the like are started by main discussion posters and not by me. And of course when King Keano didn't honour his pledge main discussion posters made up the difference many of who had never posted on the Rays funds thread.

I honestly think if we are removed from main discussion I'd seriously consider jacking in.

There's some interesting thoughts here. Especially about the codes and stuff. But it's beyond me and I'd need help to sort it out.

As I said in the OP the amount of text is a consequence of the longevity and success of the thread itself.Rays Funds becomes more and more popular each year and the for the last three years the amount raised has been over two grand. A fantastic effort from the posters on this forum. To put it into context the signature in 2009 looked like this....

Carve their names with pride.Yankee,2,Fellas,2,P''boro,Mr Chops,NewYork, yes Norfolkchance1 £400 for the Academy,so far

Please keep the ideas coming.

The weekly thread is up now.

I'm confused, where did I say it was exclusive, or that it belonged to you or regular contributors? Then you talk about why some pups don't pick, don't have time to pick etc etc where did I mention any of that?  I just agreed the opening post is too long & suggested Rays Funds had its own section which you and another didn't think was a good idea which is fair enough, sorry it was such a crap idea😥

Or we could hide it in the back of a kitchen cupboard...

It needs to be front and centre, firstly to remind existing PuPs  and secondly to bring newer posters to the scheme.

The opening gambit is as long as it is due to the longevity and success of the idea. It needs tidying up but I’m not sure what the limitations of that are on this forum. 🤷‍♂️

Sorry Diane. I was just pointing out that the huge success of Rays Funds comes from main discussion posters.

We need to support each other.

Here is my five penneth.... Diane is right that a lot of pickers just bypass the long opening text and only look at who is picking that particular week so as to wish them luck in their individual pick and maybe look at the running total of money in the pot.

The ever increasing list of winners in the two sections is getting bigger and bigger due to the continued success of the thread. How about grouping these winners into two links that you could open i you so desire. Loads of text there to make the opening weekly invite to pick far less lengthy to read.

Yes 👍 that's pretty much the whole reason this came up. Added to the fact that an explanation of how it works has been requested for a long time.

I'm really protective of Ray's signature because it's my link every week to his memory. Also it means so much to PUPs to get their name on it. Even those who didn't know him.

The signature on my later post was where we were when we lost Ray. Where we are now is a magnificent tribute to his memory ❤️

You’re probably right that Existing pickers will skip it because they’ve already read it. The information still needs to be there to explain to potential new pickers I think?

I’ve got a couple of ideas but I don’t know how to implement them on here..

It appears that quite rightly the opening post needs to be more ' punchy ' but on the other hand some resistence to removing the current text.

It's a tough one for me and I've been putting it off for a very long time. We also need that explanation up there somewhere.

Explanation itself is difficult when you consider how much PUPs has evolved and the different ways this community find to add to the pot.

Really like that idea Duncan. Especially if it was a graphic that I could update. That may not be too bulky for the weekly posts.

I usually just scroll to see who’s picking, however from time to time I do like to look back at the names, some absent friends, and think about the great wins we’ve had.

Duncans handiwork is great 👍🏻
