Only at Portman Road

Recommended Posts

With bated breath binmen the length and breadth of beautiful Suffolk have been waiting for a 7 am radio announcement this morning about a matter of some significance for their club.

Imaginations have worked overtime. From Chinese investment, fuelled by the timing and time differences, to Marcus Evans buying the ground from the council, but just falling just short of Lionel Messi signing for the club.

However, to the delight of the local pigeon population, it seems that this matter of massive importance relates to the fact that the funding for the Kevin Beattie ('The Beat') statue has, after eight months, now been achieved. It's therefore full steam ahead for yet another cenotaph to be erected in memory of their glorious past.

Putting aside my own aversion to these monuments, feeling they should be reserved for monarchs or outstanding statesmen (the former to be melted down when the great  Republic finally comes) does this seem a worthwhile gesture to others or a waste of much needed funds for a club with such a debt?

As an emotional stone I remain ambivalent, but find the whole episode amusing (and slightly hypocritical considering the way the club neglected the player in his years of need,) but would anybody here want Carrow Road surrounded by monuments to the past?

Can't see much wrong with it personally, although do think it makes more sense to do these things when the subject is living.

When do we start the ball rolling for the Kevin Keelan statue?

KK would collect that ball clean through the striker  and punt it down t"other end in one powerful movement, pausing only to sneer at the prostrate attacker groaning on the floor.

Starting to look like the Appian Way down there, can't think of anything worse, turning up on a Saturday afternoon to watch them struggle against League One opposition, while outside, a constant reminder of glory days in the dim and distant past, never to return.

Ken Foggo would be better

save quite a bit on materials, with him being smaller and all
