I thought beating them without Smith might feel like a hollow victory, but getting thrashed when they haven’t even got their best player playing is really poor. It’s all down to mentality for our batsmen. Look at Stokes getting out today, ridiculous ball to try and play at when you’ve just lost a few cheap wickets. It’s not about having “test match technique” for me - Smith’s technique is a millions miles away from classical. It’s all about having the control and focus to leave the half decent ball that in one day games you need to go after.
