Team for Newcastle (h)...

McLean might play better as a deep lying midfielder with an aggressive and pacy DM like Amadou alongside him - although I'd still prefer Leitner there - but I've personally felt he'd play better further up the pitch. Then again, I'm not the coach, and Farke has been very successful so I defer to his judgement 🙂

A rest for Steiperman, Hanley and McLean. I’d like to see Cantwell in the CAM role with Hernandez, Lietner and Klose to start. If Klose isn’t fit then Amadou in as CB. The Newcastle game is one we must win or at the very least not lose.

Don't like the idea of putting Amadou in at CB, if he's fit, he should start in his best position.

Despite all the noise, Newcastle is not a must win game.

I get what people are saying in regard to avoid the noise or it isn't a must win, in the long term. However with the starting fixtures and mini leagues in this league it is an important game.

We need to show we have learnt from a few mistakes from Liverpool and we need a few areas of the pitch to perform better. In fact a really good performance is needed to beat Newcastle.

Newcastle have had the usual turmoil from Mike Ashley and although 2 new signings performed well they are considered a team who could struggle. Bruce is unpopular with the fans and the togetherness, that we have, is not there at the moment.

So for me, the quiet noise out of Colney for the last 2 days is good, hopefully shows we are truly focussed and we will get the right team out there. We need the right team to give us that chance of a win. Last year we learnt at the end of the season how important it was to play the players that are performing, Vrancic at the end of the season.

So I think Cantwell is a Def starter and I think we look to include our better players, Amadou I would think is ready. I think if the team does not have a few changes in midfield then we may see some similar problems.

So as said before

Krul

Aarons, Godfrey, klose, Lewis

Leitner, Amadou

Buendia, Cantwell, Hernandez

Pukki

I do not see the changes effecting togetherness, this group is close and knows a win is a squad win

Trybull, McLean, Marco and Hanley would potentially be on the bench so they would possibly still see game time

Although vrancic certainly deserves some time soon

What makes you think that Amadou is ready? Do you know something that the rest of us don't?

Do you really think DF will drop Marco after one game, given the loyalty he showed across the squad last season?

Genuine questions as I'm interested on your views which I find surprising.

Amadou has been here for 2 weeks and as far as I am aware had a full preseason before his move. His minutes therefore similar to our rotational midfielders this preseason.

I would think the level he was at with the Sevilla team would be like many other new additions to premier League squads and ready to come in.

We have brought him in as a proven DM in 2 of Europe's top leagues and we expect him to play a number of games that can lead to survival, that is in the reported loan agreement.

TT was cramping early I believe, no injury report yet, but Amadou is a natural starter and if TT has a little niggle then of course a fully fit Amadou starts.

I believe you get the best players on the pitch to beat a given team, cohesion is really important but so is individual brilliance in this league. I do think Marco would be under pressure this summer from a new addition and I feel as many have said Cantwell has performed, right now. That is my point, the guys performing right now you take advantage of.

Last season Buendia, Hernandez, Vrancic etc had purple patches. You take advantage of that.

The cohesion does not look damaged if we move our squad around a bit and I would say that being in the match day squad for ie. Marco, would still see him having some playing time.

Do I think farke will make the multiple changes to what I consider a pretty settled line up that can get the results, no.

I am a fan, not someone who sees them everyday. But I would see the team noted as a team that is performing now and one that can be settled.

Good discussion, but I'd go for Smooth's line-up:

Krul

Aarons, Godfrey, klose, Lewis

Leitner, Amadou

Buendia, Cantwell, Hernandez

Pukki

I can see the argument for not changing, but I think DF may be influenced by the players who came on so positively at Anfield (Leitner and Hernandez). Newcastle tend to attack from the flanks and Hernandez's ability to track back is better than Cantwell's. Andalou would be well suited to screen the defence from Newcastle's dual striker threat and we need him up and going before Chelsea, West Ham and Man City. I trust DF to make the right choice though, so if he goes for Marco and SuperTom, then so be it.

I don't believe klose is going to play, nor Amadou.

Yes with the notes from the guys on the pinkun, it suggests potentially too soon for klose. So I can see Hanley against his old club.

Krul

Aarons, Hanley, Godfrey, Lewis

Leitner, Amadou

Buendia, Cantwell, Hernandez

Pukki

Yes, my prediction was based on Klose being fit, but if he isn't it has to be Hanley again. With a decent pre-season run of games he should do ok if either Amadou or Trybull can provide support.

Newcastle played 352 in their last match. They will have watched us play Liverpool and will see that we are unbelievably weak in the air at the back even off corners and more so if they can drag our fullbacks into defending aerially in front of goal.

With two central strikers and our zonal system they will be looking to set up this mismatch all game long.

Presumably Farke is well aware of this issue.

There is even a case for us to play 352 or 532 ourselves although I suspect we’ll keep the same formation.

Two central strikers gave us big problems against Atalanta in that it allowed very quick counters through the middle. It also pins back our fullbacks who are a big part of our game. Again this is something that Farke will be prepared for.

Although they are not the greatest side in the division Newcastle offer the types of goal threats that we are particularly susceptible to.

If we keep a clean sheet we’ll win. But my guess is that a clean sheet is unlikely given Newcastle’s aerial abilities. Currently our best City players of ball in the air are Farhmann ( who probably won’t play given Krul’s last performance) and Amadou who might play but is unlikely to play at CB.

Let’s hope Klose is fit. He’s decent in the air. Let’s also hope that we can dominate the possession stats too and cut out the supply.

On our day we can score 5 or 6.

It's a good piece showing the understanding between Marco, Pukki and Buendia

It shows that Farke has a very tough decision. I just wish Marco was a little bit more clinical. He will certainly get chances and maybe the starting line up in our advanced positions will remain as Liverpool.

Cantwell deserves to stay but Hernandez also certainly is looking bright.

This has felt a really long week, come on Saturday!!!!

At some point I would love us to play Leitner and Vrancic in the same team so I would go for the team posted by Jools earlier. Farke is not one for making wholesale changes though, which proved right last season but might not be this. Buendia had a fairly quiet pre-season and seems to be playing within himself. Don't know what's going on there but we need that 'outrageous' Emi back if we are going to do well.  Seems quiet on the Klose/Zimmermann front too so I'm expecting Hanley again.

I'm a Vrancic fan too - and if he's fit would love to see him start / appear.

One issue we need to get our mind around is that Farke has a squad of options - we all have our favourites (I note some laud Cantwell recently) but Farke needs to pick / rotate / select from the squad the right options for any given match. It might mean our so called 'best' players are occasionally benched - I might choose Onel over Cantwell for 'pace' and to see how it goes - to give the defenders something else to think about - a variety of challenges (i.e. Marco too).  All the top sides do this and the players understand it too.

I dont really think he will change anything if there are no further injuries and non of the injured players have recovered.

Personally would like to see Hernandez in.

Think Leitner showed how much he wanted a start when he came on against Liverpool. Difficult to drop McLean who didn't really do anything wrong, but I can remember what Mo did and can't recall seeing Kenny at all. Cantwell, Buendia, Stiepermann showed enough to persevere for at least another game, and if neither of our specialist CB's are available then stick with the same back 5.

It isn't a must-win at this stage of the season, but as Farke would say we need to be 'greedy' with opponents like this. Only 3 teams in the last 10 years have gone down having won 10 games- this should be a great chance to only need 9 more.

I am a massive vrancic fan, he proved when in crazy pressure moments, he passed with flying colours. He is our most gifted set piece taker, he has a passing range that is suited to this league.

When he comes on from the bench I think he will prove he needs to be in the first 11 more often than not.

I can see a 4-5-1 system at times but even in our current system he offers so much in the final third.

I expect him to come on from the bench Vs Newcastle and I think he could be the difference maker, either with an assist or a great finish.
