attacking midfielder

Recommended Posts

I am in total agreement with Stuart Webber's approach to transfers, and spending silly money will not guarantee we stay up.

However, as well as the CDM position which arguably needs strengthening, I strongly believe we need an attacking midfielder, of the creative variety, for us to stand a proper chance of staying up this year.

We saw towards the back end of last season that with Buendia suspended, we really struggled (from memory we drew 3 or 4 on the bounce).

So, an attacking midfielder to bolster the squad? Personally, I would opt for Alex Pritchard as a known quantity, though I appreciate this is unlikely in light of his forced exit and Farke's emphasis on team spirit.

Thoughts?

I believe Drmic has been played out wide at previous clubs, add Patrick Roberts to the mix and I think we're bolstered plenty from last season to the point that we won't be quite so heavily reliant on Buendia (though any team would miss a player of his class).

I would have liked to see some competition for Stiepermann's position, but if Todd Cantwell can replicate his best bits from the Atalanta came in the Premier League, then never mind competition, he could make the position his own. He looks like he has bulked up, so if he can match Stiepermann for physicality, I think he has a bit more in the locker than him with regards to creativity and attacking nous.

we will stay up fairly easily

play is very fluid and we are not in need of 'specialist' players, we just need to get 100% of of each player, as we look a far stronger squad than the last two squads that went up

I agree with this.

At the start of the summer I did think we should look at a new starter in the AM position as Marco had been a bit plucky at times and we needed someone with a bit more flair. TC showed great ability and with the flair came end results. So I hope he can continue as if he does he will be a talked about player and maybe push Marco out at times.

Not Pritchard, he's not coming back, not while DF/SW  are in charge.if Marco isn't the man, Todd will expect a chance, beyond that there's Emi, Roberts and Mario to get gametime.

At the risk of sounding boring (again) I'm a bit disappointed that with the news on Rhodes, there's no talk of a DM, surely that's priority number one.

I'm sure a DM is coming. That there hasn't been any news might suggest we have our sights on someone on the continent (presumably Germany), out of view of the pretty lazy British journalists, who'll be announced out of the blue before the deadline. Given how we appear to be operating in the transfer market post-Webberlution (derisory offers initially before eventually succumbing to something palatable to the seller), I shouldn't think it'll be a Football Manager-esque process of signing what will possibly be our marquee for the window.

Then again, I've been pretty useless at reading our club these days, so they're probably happy with Trybull as the CDM and trusting that Tettey and Thompson will get fit and provide solid cover or even competition. What's happening with Thompson at the minute, dare I ask?

The club have a large shipment of sticky back plastic and a faith healer on order.

Thompson's current injury is a hamstring, which can happen to any player so he shouldn't be out much longer. The news on Tettey is good, but he will probably miss the first few matches as well. SW has to decide whether to sign another DM using our last homegrown slot, or ride out the injuries and keep it available for January. Whoever we might sign now isn't going to be integrated into our style of playing from the off, so it could be a big gamble. Not an easy one for SW.

Regardless of whether Tettey and Thompson are on the way back, we're still fragile in that department.

It's been an issue all summer and has been discussed many times on here, I'm struggling to believe that we're not going to add another body before the window closes.

Not if Farke rates Thompson. We've only seen him in flashes but he has looked decent. Didn't he get a man of the match in one of the few games he's played the full 90 minutes?

If the medical guys are advising that the worst of his injuries are behind him and that he's likely to be fit soon, and Farke thinks he is capable, I doubt he'd look to spend on CDM if he has two players he rates in this position (Trybull and Thompson) with Tettey waiting in the wings.

I doubt that is the case, but I wouldn't be that surprised if that's his thinking and will assume that's the plan if no one has arrived come deadline day.

I'm sorry, but even the most positive individual must concede that relying on Thompson to gain full fitness is a gamble. He's injury prone, and sadly looks set to continue. His last three comebacks have all ended in injury in a matter of minutes.

We are short of powerful central midfield players. It's a concern this hasn't been addressed, but I'm sure it's not through lack of trying.

The addition of Roberts gives us the option to move Emi more central, also if Todd can replicate some of his pre-season stuff he can be pushing from a starting position

We have plenty of attacking options so priority would have to be a CB or CDM.  Getting Buendia up to speed seems a necessity but Todd's form is a real bonus.   Our attacking impetus will rely on speed of transfer into the 3 and Leitner looks to be the crucial link for this as he's quicker of thought, sees and delivers more penetrating passes.

Godfrey is looking head and shoulders our best CB so looks like he's becoming less of an option for CDM (although personally think he would be immense in that role too).

Hanley isn't equipped for EPL and Klose still looks off the pace which is a worry but hopefully he'll get by on experience.  Byram looked quite like Culverhouse the other night, wonder if he could sweep like him behind Godfrey?  Am clutching I know but Culverhouse was some sweeper.  Remember that position.

Caleb Richard's will be back in Oct to add competition at left back and think we may need that.

If we were to sign new players, has to be CB or CDM.    But regardless, only a week to go...can't wait... OTBC.

Statistically, Vrancic and McClean both delivered more passes into the final third per 90 mins than Leitner did last season.

Leitner is great at dictating the tempo of a game and allowing Norwich to control possession, but he is less penetrative than the other two.

It is possible to work on more than one transfer at once! If we are looking for another CDM, I think it's likely it'll be relatively expensive by our standards, so the club will be taking their time to negotiate the best deal possible.

Leitner started the season when we hadn't found form yet and he was a catalyst for our play being at the heart of it.     He played his games when we didn't have quite the same passing options.   McLean and Vrancic played when the pattern of play was honed and thus we were much more dominant.

Statistics do not give the full picture and you need to take circumstance into the consideration too.     Your right Leitner dictates the play and very well.    From what I can see as good as McLean and Vrancic are, Leitner's the better option.

We've got loads of midfield options. We could play any two from Trybull, Leitner, McLean, Vrancic, Tettey and Thompson. We don't have to have a single CDM. It's far more important that whoever plays fully understands the way the team plays, their individual role and the work level required rather than possessing some mythical defensive attributes that are apparently available to buy for under £20m.

I'd argue that only Trybull, Tettey and Thompson are ball winning DMs. Thompson has an appalling record of injuries, Tettey's days are numbered, leaving Trybull who may get injured, suspended or proves to be not good enough, then what?

Don't say Godfrey, it's not going to happen.

I would have liked to have seen us try roberts, buendia and hernandez all behind pukki , with buendia in the no.10 role in one of these friendlies ..just to have experimented with an alternative to steipermann

My point is that we would be far better playing without a 'ball winning DM' than trying to integrate a new player into our team. Not to mention how much of an expensive gamble it would be to sign someone of sufficient ability to actually improve on what we have.

Which is why it should have been dealt with earlier, and why it's become a bone of contention on here throughout the summer.

Can we get away with not playing a DM player in the premier League, given the way our midfield works as a high pressing unit? I certainly think it's possible, given how tenacious Vrancic and Emi became, for example, across the last season with defensive duties as well as attacking.

However, It's certainly hard to see us having the lions share against the big teams such as Man City and Liverpool, and a deep sitting DM may be a great option to throw on when in winning positions. Personally, I would certainly feel more comfortable if we signed Somone, given Thompson's injury record (and given that he's currently injured...!), and Tetty's age! But if the plan is to stick to our guns of fielding mainly attacking minded players, then maybe what we've got is enough.
