Twenty four million old-style £1 coins have been returned to the Royal Mint over the last year.

But that still leaves 145 million outstanding - even though people have been unable to spend them in shops since October 2017.

And another 5 million fake ones.

I thought that they were now mostly used as tokens in supermarket trolleys.

(These are surely the only thing ever not subject to inflation, they have been worth £1 for decades now.)

I have one. And this is EXACTLY what I use it for!

You can put them in the vending machine at my work (Crisps, drinks sort of thing) then press the cancel button before you make your choice and the machine refunds you with a new coin. So I be been told, as obviously I would never do such a thing!

I was in the UK last September, changed up some money before I left. When I arrived I found out that you'd changed the notes and had to go to a bank, who then wanted me to open an account, before they would exchange for current money.

You'd have thought that NZ banks would have already exchanged their old notes for new ones and banks in the UK would make it easier to pass in old currency.

Apologies to anyone in the queue behind me in the HSBC in Lowestoft, if you were, you would remember!

Had similar  difficulties  when over to cremate the mother in law, was given a first full of Fifty quid notes over here when I changed my lovely euros, they were up to date, but many places  really weren't keen on taking them,  why is that,  are there lots of hooky  fifties in circulation over there? Also tried to swap them for twenties  and tens at local PO, no joy. Ended up going in and out of Tesco's,  buying things that I didn't really  want,  but cost around a quid ,at the self service checkout.  Six cans of whatever, bought singly, which gave me back 295.50 for my 300 quid, complete pain in the hole.  Gotta love the UK for it's open minded friendly accommodating  banks  and businesses.

It's not that there is a load of bent fifties, more that people don't see or handle them very often so shops don't trust their staff to spot dodgy ones. I'm surprised the post office wouldn't help though, I would have kicked off a bit if I'd been in that position...

Finally got around to buying some replacement sofa cushions last week. Had to take all the cushions off to measure up. I actually found 2 of the old £1 coins wedged down the side. Wish they were newer, to be honest, could have paid some way towards the new cushions. :classic_tongue:

Samo, i very nearly did, especially as i tried to buy a first class stamp with one of them and they refused to serve me as they knew i only wanted change. i offered to donate the stamp to the charity of their choice or they could give it to the next pensioner that came in for one. Most shops have a note checking machine don't they, didnt get caught out the next time i was over though, ordered a bunch of twenties at my PO over here........and they were a bit iffy about it but did it in the end.

Question, if you have a UK bank account and want to withdraw 5 or 6 hundred quid from a machine, does it spew out a heap of twenties or are you stuck with a load of Fifties that many places wont entertain?

A fifty Euro is a very common note, if the pound drops much more it'll be worth less than a  euro, will they accept them once Boris and co make it worthless, i'm quite looking forward to getting more than a quid for my euro. Just had a thought, once Brexit goes  through( if ever) and the ££ is worth sweet FA, it might just bring more Europeans to the UK...on holiday cos it'll be so cheap to come. That'll be nice.

Most UK debit cards are limited to £500 withdrawals per day, however they almost never stock £50 notes in ATMs because so many places are funny at taking them. When you withdraw a large amount over the counter they will usually even ask if you are happy with fifties. I would think of them more like the €200 note as I know some places are funny about those.

Despite their supposed rareness though, there are almost as many fifties in circulation as fivers (344m v 380m)!

“ when over to cremate the mother in law “ sounds like she might not have been deceased up to that point 😉

Yes, those fifty’s are real b*ggers to get rid of. I don’t think it’s so much that some aren’t made by the Bank of England more that they’re generally associated with crime especially money laundering and drug dealing. When batches are tested for drugs most of them are found to be dusted with coke which might not be to everyone’s tastes unless you fancy a free snort.

I was gonna ask you where all those fifties are used Samo, but Smitho has pretty much answered it. Solution, bring out a £100 or £200 note for the dodgy conts and bingo ...FREE THE FIFTY.

Little known fact, RBS actually do issue a £100 note, though no idea how many are in circulation and with the difficulty people have accepting Scottish fivers Christ knows what they would make of a Scottish £100!

The only place I’ve seen fifties dished out from cash dispensers is in casinos. There’s so many of ‘em flying around on the gaming tables that you’re likely to get bundled away by security if you try to use anything less 🙂
