Klose DM Debate

Recommended Posts

Any reason Klose hasn’t been tried as a Defensive midfielder?

good passer and reading of the game and maybe 4th in-line at CB. He could ping the passes around from that quarter back position

i suspect he has been tried in training or there’s enough cover before him in this position.

Thoughts?

With Zimmermann injured, Klose will likely pair with Godfrey at the back and if they do well, Zimbo may not get back in the team straight away, so the question of Klose or Godfrey moving to a DM position won't arise.

Klose imo is capable of playing the DM position, as is Godfrey, but for me Trybull is still the man - he is often the key player in a performance - certainly in the matches I saw last season, he was often up there as motm - against Middsbro away he was brilliant.  So I think it is his position and anyone else in the equation is just a back up to him.....and we still have Tettey.

I understand the call for this DM but sometimes by playing a defensive midfielder and making sure our full backs do their defensive duties can invite pressure.

I like the Idea of using either Godfrey or Klose in that role which means they can drop in to allow our fullbacks forward.

Lets not forget this is the Premiership it’s full of top of the world players in all teams, theres not going to be many games we keep a clean sheet.

We are need to stay with our style of attacking fullbacks a move the ball forward as we have last season we will need goals.

I agree with wacky, it is not just physical strength but being able to run at a high intensity for 90minutes. I would not say that is Kloses game, he needs the game in front of him.

Godfrey is more suited following his transition from DM to CB but I cannot see Farke changing that as discussed many atime.

It is TT position at the moment, AT may get a look in. It does seem we have experimented with the 3 centre halves and Aaron's and Lewis out wide. So possibly we are seeing how that can work with our current personnel before making a decision on any other addition.

It will be near impossible and wrong to try and move too far away from our attacking style in one close season. Sure it's tough to keep clean sheets in the Prem but its also tough to score goals. Our strength is our attacking flare and we need to keep doing that as much as we can.

Hairy, I agree you can look at our strike options and say without pukki we don't have a striker who has scored regularly. Drmic has had an injury laden few seasons from what we read. Srbeny has been a squad player and Idah has scored at youth level. So the system can't change much as we had goals from across our formation.

Goals are critical and certainly I agree we won't change philosophy, however Farke has alluded to changes in formation of required, we did against Schalke.

Preseason allows a lot of opportunity to just run through some ideas however too many changes are not great. This team has a plan A that performed to win us the title last year. It will be great to see in the prem, but also I look forward to see how we adapt to play some of the best teams in the league and Europe. But a total change is not the way forward.

Changing playing styles is not always great if you don't have the players who can then implement them.

Klose simply does not have the attributes to be a DM - mobility for one. We need to buy a specialist and I'm genuinely a bit shocked that we haven't already. Considering how much emphasis Farke places on bedding players in and ensuring that they are up to our fitness levels/style of play, we are definitely leaving it a bit late - which makes me worried that maybe it's not even going to happen at all?

Webber talked about how sometimes transfer can't happen until towards the end of the window due to other clubs waiting to sign players, or prices dropping as the deadline approaches. This is probably even more complicated due to the window in England closing about a month before other countries. The soundbites coming out of Farke also don't make it sound like he is desperate for anyone else to come it, so he could very well be happy with what he has - if a formation change is planned then he might not consider a new defensive midfielder a high priority.

If, for example, Farke is planning to play more of a 4-3-3 than a 4-2-3-1 then having then is less need for an all action midfielder as the extra body in that area would mean less need for someone who can cover significant amount of ground.

Do you think we currently have anyone good enough to play that central role whether it be in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3? I personally don't, which is why I'm slightly concerned. Of course Farke and Webber know more than myself, though!

In a 4-3-3 I could see Trybull or McLean being able to be the deepest midfielder.

The 4-2-3-1 means that you have 2 players in the central midfield roles, but neither of them is really tasked with sitting in front of the centre backs. This means both have more ground to cover behind them. Last season Norwich would have Trybull being deeper and McLean next to him, who pushed further forward. It worked well as Norwich were always the aggressors and didn't have to worry about defending too much. Trybull is a good tackler and a neat passer, so he could win the ball and then move it onto McLean to progress it up the pitch. However, Trybull's biggest flaw is that he isn't particularly mobile so teams could get in behind Norwich's defence.

However, you pull back Stipermann from being a 10 and play say Leitner and McLean alongside each other, then dropping Trybull to sit behind those two - the lack of mobility is a lessor issue as he has less area to cover. It is a more defensive formation, and losing a dedicated No. 10 needs to be overcome in other ways (you'd probably put Buendia on the left and Roberts on the right - telling them to come central to fill that space).

I worry about Trybull in a 4-2-3-1 as I think Norwich will get exposed in the space between defence and midfield, unless you pull both Trybull and McLean back to play two defensive midfielders, but that makes transitioning the ball from defence to attack much more difficult.

Tom's one of my favourite players but watching him run is like one of those nightmares where you try to get away from a monster but the floor is covered in superglue and treacle.

That said, his lack of (both pace and) acceleration is one of the reasons I imagine he has such excellent game-reading and anticipation.

I think the 4-3-3 we will be very exposed and narrow.

Think the 4-2-3-1 fits many of our players, allowing a 4-5-1 in defence and in attack allowing our full backs to move forward.

I can also see (any 3 of) Vrancic, Marco, Roberts, Hernandez, Mclean and Buendia in that 3 behind Pukki. But also dropping deep and being available for our defenders and deeper midfielders, setting the tempo.

So Leitner and TT would be in that 2, bethnal I see the concerns with TT in that position and hence why I think we do need an upgrade in that position.

As mentioned I can see us still very active in the transfer market, looking at opportunities as Webber says till the end. It could lead good deals and the selling club could be looking for their own replacement.

Still an exciting transfer window has a few weeks to go.
