Is VAR such a good idea?

Lets wait and see, American Football, Rugby Cricket all benefit from review process.

Am I right in thinking rugby only uses it for tries?  Not for offside?

No they use it for offside too and any potential sending off. It works very well in rugby.

What pees me off mostly in VAR is what I call the "typical VAR penalty". For first judgement it looks nothing:  ref waves it on or awards a GK, or corner kick, or whatever follows from the run of play. The call is usually not contested, as typically no real threat on goal is being involved. The ref then gets a message from the VAR-room, and keeps reviewing the even until he finds something that may apply in the book on the situation (althought it's not a 100 pc) but under pressure makes the penno call. ManU's third goal angainst PSG, the USA's first goal in the women's world cup final, and France's second penalty in the world cup final come to mind as examples.
