'Twas The Night Before Christmas

Recommended Posts

                  ''Twas The Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and sad at the ground
Not a player performing, from the crowd not a sound
Nigel clung to his job like his hands had been wired
His post match rhetoric fell short of inspired

Norfolk’s dumplings were nestled all snug in their beds
While fans fired attacks at each others heads
“We want to go forward but now we’ve gone back”
The boring debate’s on “Who else can we sack?”

When down at the ground there arose such a clatter
The police force turned up to see what was the matter
It was a televised fantasy on a big screen
A game of good football by the yellow and green

The players danced, they weaved, they passed and they scored
Delia did somersaults while every fan roared
It seemed like a miracle to the most deserving of fans
As singing and happiness was back in the stands

How was this feat managed the masses enquired?
By Santa Claus who stood at the manager’s side
With laughter and bear hugs to players one and all
As he told them to frolic, it’s only a ball

The screen went black and the illusion did too
But Santa’s last words were heard by a few
They heard him exclaim ‘ere he drove out of sight
Good times will return and to all a good night

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Good idea, Paul Rankin - how about the pink''un publishing this poem. Lord knows, they''ve printed far less inspiring and original work than this over the years.

Good to see you back in print and in such good for YC.

I have missed your reasoned approach to flaming compared to much of the simple mud slinging we currently see, even if I cant agree with some of what you say!

Come and share some more.

great stuff Yankee, your post is simply awesome and a great read, thought you would like to know it has also received much praise on the Wrath of the Barclay and Carrowroad.net sites!

Happy Christmas to you and hope you stay for some more debate on other threads.

Is there snow in New York yet?

Thank you all for your kind words but, without wishing to be ungracious, I can hardly accept praise. This is the second year I have "borrowed" the sentiments of the author of this wonderful piece, Clement Clarke Moore. When he wrote it over two hundred years ago, being a modest and loving man, he wrote it for his wife and children. It took a friend to submit it to a newspaper some time later.

The words I chose simply tried to recognise that, for all Norwich fans, regardless of the mixture of disappointment ( in some cases despair ) and frustration at our team''s performance this year, we all have the candle burning in hope no matter the size of the flame. I think that''s why the words drew favourable response.

P.S: Hi Gazza. Had snow recently but, raining pretty hard today. No shovelling required.

Yankee you beat me to the punch. My kids have it amongst their collection of books that come out at this time of the year.

That said your plagiarism was more than worth the read.
