How did West Brom get it right?

Recommended Posts

With the much maligned Megson in charge West Brom got it right after relegation. They were hard to beat, dull, difficult to break down, dull, scored some late goals, dull, physical, dull and driven.

Whatever they were, they got it right. Can anyone recall what they did with their squad when they were relegated?

I seem to recall them spending virtually nothing in their first prem season. After relegation, they spent a fair wedge on some decent signings like Jason Roberts, Jason Koumas.

So essentially they achieved it by not breaking up the promotion winning side, kwwping the squad that got relegated together and adding a bit more quality to it.

Not sure where you got Koumas and Roberts from, Koumas was bought a year or two before, and Roberts was bought back in the 2000/2001 season, then put on loan the year they came second to us, before subsequently being sold half way through the season.

No, no, no, don''t cloud this oblique swipe at Norwich with facts about West Brom. If we want to believe that they kept all their relegated players then let us believe that, it helps validate the idea that what Norwich have done is utterly wrong. We should have prevented players from returning to their home countries... I dunno, by confiscating their passports?

West brom had more or less the same squad second time round in promotion

We have a totally diffrerent squad

No Malky, No Edworthy, No Francis, No Svensson, No Roberts, No Rivers (not that he really played), No Holt

I am not saying anything other than the players werent there anymore - for a variety of reasons.

I certainly dont believe that any have been properly replaced apart from Ashton for Roberts.
