At the outset I ruled out Starmer, and Cooper, on the probably mistaken basis that Labour would want to skip a generation. It might still do, of course, but not definitely so. If it was Starmer, though, I imagine one of the younger generation, Long Bailey, Phillips? Nandy etc, would be elected deputy. I can see the Starmer appeal. The only way (unlikely but possible) there will be a non-Tory government after the next election is if there is some kind of anti-Tory coalition, and the other parties would probably be more willing to work with him than any of the others. Does it work like that? I thought he candidates will stand for Leader or Deputy, can they be on the ballot for both?

Not being a member I don’t know precisely how it works, and whether the leader and deputy are chosen at the same time, or whether members know who the leader is and then vote for deputy. But in any event if Starmer does get the top job I think the deputy is pretty much guaranteed to be one of the younger generation, just because I think Starmer is going to be the only serious older-generation candidate in the field for either job. Looks like it's two separate contests, here are the potential deputy leaders. https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/labour-deputy-leader-candidates-leadership-election-2020-next-tom-watson-1344772 Edited January 8, 2020 by A Load of Squit

If the deputy leader isn't Angela Rayner I will eat my hat. (Word is that everyone thinks the Left cocked up going for Long-Bailey/Rayner rather than Rayner/Long-Bailey as their "dream team")

Rock The Boat 1,326 Posted January 8, 2020 So it's going to cost you £25 to join the Labour party in order to vote for the next leader. Last week the same people were saying poor people can't afford voter ID. And they wonder why we call them Champagne Socialists🤣

Jools 584 Posted January 8, 2020 CORBYN THRICE REFUSES TO CALL SOLEIMANI A TERRORIST: During the election, Guido speculated on which terrorist friend Corbyn would invite to Downing Street first if he were elected in December. Luckily we will now never find out… Corbyn has now unveiled his latest shocking foreign policy opinion in refusing to call Soleimani a terrorist – a man responsible for the deaths of thousands of Middle Easterners and Western forces; and something even Democrats like Elizabeth Warren have agreed with wholeheartedly. Is it any wonder Boris has refused to personally brief Jezza on Privy council terms? Every day we must be thankful he never got into power See also: Which Terrorist Friend Would Corbyn Invite to Downing Street First?
