important difference between AstraZeneca's relationship with the UK and its relationship with the EU – and the reason it has fallen behind schedule on around 50m vaccine doses promised to the bloc – is that the UK agreed its deal with AstraZeneca a full three months before the EU did. This gave AstraZeneca an extra three months to sort out manufacturing and supply problems relating to the UK contract

I guess the only "advantage" due to Brexit is that knowing we were leaving the EU, we felt free to cut our own deal with AZ and not act in a co-ordinated manner with other EU nations which gave us a short term supply advantage. Score 1 for pre-Brexit then, to be set against all the post-Brexit disadvantages which are very obviously increasing day by day.

Yes, this is really where I come from. The fact that what we did last summer was all within the EU rules simply at a stroke removes what follows from being an EU or Brexit issue. Indeed if we had still been in the EU and joined what became their cooperative scheme its quite possible we'd all still be in the same position. There is nothing to stop any EU country from making an emergency authorization for anything. 

The simple truth is that we all took various bets and options . Pfizer was not one we bet particularly on but came good first and frankly AZ is one way or another a little delayed for all. The EU were unlucky with AZ but equally by sheer chance imagine it was reversed- the AZ Belgian plant running full steam and us delayed in the UK with AZ. Its really sheer chance on the plant delays - and its very early days for us as well! 

What we have done well is roll out the vaccines we have. That's good but again not an EU issue as it varies on a national basis.

Did leaving the EU help us make more independent decisions? Probably but I think it's mainly chance what followed.

When all they have to cheer is the other side making a bit of a balls up of a vaccination program, which incidentally is bad for everyone, then you know things aren't going the way they hoped. 

Johnson got a bit of a win with the vaccine roll out, mostly through the brilliance of all those clinicians and volunteers, but it doesn't hide the fact that he has lead a disastrous, and corrupt, covid response. No attempts at distraction can hide the numbers.
