The Positive Brexit Thread

Recommended Posts

So, it's clear, one way of trying to get Brexit to pay its way is to sell off the NHS:

Tory MPs rip out NHS protections from trade bill

Conservative MPs have ripped out an amendment to the government's trade bill to prevent the NHS being sold off or undermined by the government's trade deals with other countries.

The House of Lords had last month inserted a clause banning any agreement that “undermines or restricts” the UK's ability to provide “a comprehensive publicly funded health service free at the point of delivery”.

The amendment also restricted “the sale of patient data” and the government's ability to control drug prices.

But in a vote on Tuesday night MPs rejected the amendment by 357 votes to 266, with no Tory MPs backing the motion. The governing party's MPs were the only ones to vote against the protections.

We need to quickly find a way to get rid of these feckers before they leave future generations with absolutely nothing. Labour, LibDems, Greens, SNP, PC and anyone with a progressive outlook need to come together somehow and try and destroy Blukip or the country will be just a dried husk.

They are there for the next few years with a massive majority, they can pass whatever they want and theres no chance of an election at the moment.  My local Tory MP when I wrote to him about workers rights and food standards replied saying 'this is what people voted for, you have to respect the will of the people.'

A depressing response from a disingenuous politician.

Of course the Tory manifesto and campaign promised that there would be NO lowering of food standards or workers rights. So the people DID NOT vote for that. Sounds as bad as Richard Bacon except that your MP actually responded to your email.

As I said stupid is as stupid does.

Just spent an hour on phone to HMRC (pillar to post) sorting out non-standard EU export shipment - even they don't seem to have clear advice or know!

UK now open closed for business due to outbreak of sheer stupidity amongst the economically illiterate and incompetent.

Our food standards are higher than most countries in the EU.   What we should be doing is reducing exports and selling more at home (eg lamb and fish) and reducing any reliance on EU exports or imports.   The way that the awful and spiteful EU behaves means that we absolutely must aim to be self-sustainable on food etc.

Buy British whenever there is an alternative.  This also has the added benefit of keeping EU traffic off of our roads and of course consequent 'green' advantages.

Predictable teething problems exacerbated by the way that the course of negotiation went right up to the deadline , and all will be ironed out in due course.

Stay calm and carry on.......  😎

A know nothing, zero experience response.  Don't worry - most of our manufacturing has left for greener pastures already cutting out the UK hub. Simpler to send direct to EU now. So yes the UK problem will pass along with the luddites.

Absolutely nothing guarantees that the Tories won't lower standards as they seek to mitigate the economic catastrophe that Brexit is causing. Indeed, given this Government's record of lying and breaking promises there is every reason to think that this is exactly what they will do. We have already seen them recind the ban on neonicotinoid bee-killing pesticides. Only a fool would expect this Government to keep it's promises regarding food standards.

Pathetic really. How old men can be conned so successfully just by tweaking at their racism and xenophobia.

Well done Swindo and Moyo. You really have dragged yourselves into the gutter.

There were many fools like me that believed an extra £350 million a week would be on its way to the NHS and our kids worker rights would be protected.
You are spot on I was a fool to believe it, it was never going to happen.

Idiot! the pandemic was indeed predicted. I suggest you try reading about exercise Cygnus 2016. It was the Tories who decided to ignore the dire warnings the report contained, because they became so obsessed with fighting each other over Brexit. And here we are with the worst death rate in Europe.

Because you seem incapable of doing any research I'll let the Telegraph help you out:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/28/exercise-cygnus-uncovered-pandemic-warnings-buried-government/

Exercise Cygnus uncovered: the pandemic warnings buried by the government

Exercise Cygnus dramatically exposed the gaps in Britain’s pandemic response but its ‘terrifying’ findings have yet to be published.

Ministers from across government were seated, ashen faced, in the Cabinet Office Briefing Room (COBR). On a large flat screen, epidemiologists from Imperial College London were showing a slide which detailed the scale of the epidemic that was enveloping Britain.

The first cases of the virus had been confirmed in south east Asia two months previously. Britain reported its first cases, imported from returning travellers, a month later. Now there was widespread and sustained domestic transmission and the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared a global pandemic.

But it was not the pandemic itself that was causing those gathered in Whitehall to grimace but the nation’s woeful preparation. The peak of the epidemic had not yet arrived but local resilience forums, hospitals and mortuaries across the country were already being overwhelmed.

There was not enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for the nation's doctors and nurses. The NHS was about to “fall over” due to a shortage of ventilators and critical care beds. Morgues were set to overflow, and it had become terrifyingly evident that the government’s emergency messaging was not getting traction with the public.

This was a drill. Code-named Exercise Cygnus, it took place in October 2016 and involved all major government departments, the NHS and local authorities across Britain. The modelling for the outbreak was prepared by the same team that is tracking the all-too-real Covid-19 pandemic now. And as the Sunday Telegraph reveals, it showed gaping holes in Britain’s Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) plan.

The only significant difference between the test drill and the pandemic we now face is that Cygnus was assumed to be the H2N2 influenza virus, while Covid-19 is a coronavirus. Both spread rapidly and kill by causing acute respiratory illness.

There is one other difference. While the real Covid-19 epidemic is being played out in public, the report detailing the findings of Exercise Cygnus have never seen the light of day. A senior former government source with direct involvement in the exercise said they were deemed “too terrifying” to be revealed. Others involved cited “national security” concerns.

Firstly I should count the beds and number of doctors and nurses.

Secondly what I voted on was quite clear ‘ when we leave the EU we will have an extra £350 million a week to spend on the NHS ‘ If you are correct, please could you give me a link as to where he altered that ? As I understand it we left the EU on 1.1.2021.

Thirdly I see you have ignored the bit about workers rights.

The committee sat for all of 30 seconds and decided that the Mad Moy should be awarded the @rsehole of the week badge for his utter stupidity. Other badges will be awarded after the next sitting of the committee.

I don’t think that’s correct.
Due to questions on funding I would have thought the Jenner Group were anti Brexit. The Jenner Group predicted there would be a new virus ( probably a Corona Virus ) a number of years before. Luckily despite the lack of Government funding ( not just our government ) they went out and got private funding to develop a vaccine that was ready for when it arrived. The vaccine was here and once the computer simulations were received from China was altered over a weekend.

Had they not have predicted it the U.K. would not be in such a fortunate position.

The thing is he is in a sense not wrong but either doesn't understand the - for him - annoying reason why there is some truth in what he says or wilfully ignores it. The fact is the UK only started outperforming some EU countries precisely because it joined the EU and started enjoying the vast economic benefits. As the FT says:

Between 1958, when the EEC was set up, and Britain’s entry in 1973, gross domestic product per head rose 95 per cent in these three countries compared with only 50 per cent in Britain. After becoming an EEC member, Britain slowly began to catch up. Gross domestic product per person has grown faster than Italy, Germany and France in the more than 40 years since.

Well of course it would grow faster if it had so much catching up to do. And it is true that now the UK was actually outperforming some big EU countries. But again only because of EU membership. Whereas this historian draws the wrong and unfactual lesson:

As Britain has been economically more successful than the EU for decades, leaving is unlikely to cause lasting economic damage, even if it causes short-term difficulties.

In fact, since it was EU membership that prompted the UK's economic recover from a parlous state, there is every reason to suppose, as all reputable economists and even those working for this government do, that Brexit will cause lasting economic damage;
