Oh! "Traders face new hurdles, such as filling in customs declarations on goods being traded, even if the UK agrees a deal with Brussels. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) estimates it may need to process 270 million customs declarations from 2021, compared with 55 million currently."

How terribly terribly witty Boris must have felt at the time he coined the phrase. But in any event any sane US administration (which there will be, after four years of infantile chaos and destruction) would prioritise a US-EU deal over a US-UK one. Even without the stumbling block that Congress will not agree to any deal if Boris the Mini-Trump has endangered the Irish peace process.

horsefly 4,287 Posted November 8, 2020 The truth about Truss' "fantastic" trade deal with Japan. Laughable! https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/brexit-liz-truss-secures-tariff-wins-with-her-japan-trade-deal-for-products-uk-doesn-t-export/ar-BB1aMUFG?ocid=msedgdhp "Brexit: Liz Truss secures tariff wins with her Japan trade deal – for products UK doesn’t export" "Liz Truss has been accused of misleading MPs and the public over her new Japan trade deal, because all the tariff “wins” are for goods the UK does not export to the country anyway. Just 10 of 9,444 products will enjoy lower taxes, experts say, a list of obscure items such as birds’ eggs, raw hides, fur skins, handbags and ultra-strong spirits of at least 90 per cent alcohol. Crucially, none of the 10 have been sold to Japan for at least three years – which means the gain to British exporters is “zero”, the study has found. Yet Ms Truss claimed the “historic” Japan deal had achieved “strong tariff reductions on key agricultural products like pork, beef and salmon [that] will benefit farmers and food exporters. The reality was that “the UK has been sailing into the wind throughout the negotiations to get back to its starting point”, said Professor Alan Winters, director of the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO) at the University of Sussex."
A Load of Squit 5,135 Posted November 8, 2020 From todays FT.Britain is at risk of losing the benefits of EU trade deals with more than a dozen countries on January 1 as time runs out for it to replace agreements that Brussels has with governments around the world. The UK’s Department for International Trade said “engagement was ongoing” with 15 countries with which the EU has deals, with only weeks remaining until Britain’s post-Brexit transition period expires at the end of the year.
