The Positive Brexit Thread

Recommended Posts

the same goes for this cut and paste too you moron. And BTW it was the Tory governments decision to withdraw from this project and seek to develop its own system. Plenty of commentators (scientific, political and otherwise) at the time told them it was crazy.

The people that said this was a stupid idea are now saying we told you so. The people who said it was great to get brexit done are now whining that it is mean of the EU.

Tiresome. The greatest hits of failing brexit.....

I agree about Cameron, but May needs to be in the frame too. The referendum vote, because of the blatant lies of the Leave campaigners, was for two irreconcilable aims, so there could never be a good Brexit. You could regain a supposedly lost sovereignty and destroy the economy or save the economy and not get this supposed lost sovereignty back.

But May had a chance to produce a typically English compromise. All she needed was the courage to face down the ERG right at the outset by announcing that the UK was leaving the single market, to get out from under freedom of movement, but was going to stay in a  customs' union, with EU  rules etc, to limit the economic damage.

Instead she caved in, ruling out the single market and a customs' union, with the result that she became a laughing-stock of a PM and the ERG is in effect the government, with the unspeakable Johnson as PM.

I don't know about you Purple but you'd probably have to pay me £135,000 for a night out with Theresa May.

stupid ? What that make you lot ? So far this morning I've proved you wrong in David Cameron making  a dire prediction about peace in Europe if the UK was to leave the EU and who should be on this thread, plus the Galileo project

The president of the EU, Jean Claude Junker, said, ‘Someone who leaves the union cannot be in the same privileged position of member states.’ Other EU leaders have agreed with the decision to exclude the UK on the grounds of EU security.

You really are quite the buffoon. It's bloody obvious that once we withdrew from the EU we couldn't then hold on to all the benefits that it's actual members enjoy. FFS that's why so many of us wanted to remain. You can't seriously be objecting to the EU's position here, no one can be that stupid. Please try to engage some semblance of thought here. On your account I have a perfect right to pop down to the Carlton Club and tell them that although I'm not a member there I claim right of access to everything that their paid up members have access to. Jesus wept!

The government is furious. It claims UK entities have played an “integral part in designing, developing and managing Galileo to date, particularly the delivery of payloads for satellites, the ground control segment and the development of the PRS software.” The UK contributes to Galileo’s coverage through hosting two sensor stations at secure locations in the south Atlantic. The government claims that blocking UK industry from security-related areas risks causing delays of up to three years and additional costs of up to €1bn (£875m). Without being fully informed about the workings of the PRS, it claims, it would not have the assurances it needs to use the service in a military capacity. The UK has said it will demand the return of financial contributions to the programme of more than €1bn.

Quoting The Guardian from May 2018 now @SwindonCanary?

Not sure what you think using such dated sources really proves. This looks like the UK tried to go it alone, failed and will now be best served by crawling back to the EU and begging for readmission to Galileo.

What is more, we are likely to see more of these incidents.

Sovereignity, it's a ****, isn't it?

That's what we are asking for a free trade deal agreement. Why are the EU not allowing it ?

Is this the same EU that brexiteers expected to bend over and take it up the árse?

All sides agree that imposing a physical border and related checks would seriously disrupt supply chains within what is a highly integrated island-wide market.  Politically it could imperil the Belfast Agreement of April 1998 which established peace between the various opposing factions in Northern Ireland and the Republic. The response of EU Brexit negotiators to these laboriously worked-out proposals has been negative.  Michel Barnier has made it clear that if such an arrangement were put in place, it could apply only to the border on the island of Ireland.  It could not extend to the UK as a whole because that would enable the UK to “cherry-pick” the advantages of intra-EU free trade while avoiding the obligations of membership, they need to change

Well that is the UK’s problem isn’t it? If the UK stays in the Customs Union then the problem would not exist. But as the UK has decided to leave the CU there must be a border between the UK and EU, if not the Uk is de facto still in.

So the question is where will the border be - for GB it’s obvious as we are an island, for Northern Island they have a physical connection to the Republic. A physical border is off the table. No border at all as explained is not an option either. The solution is to put it at the physical limits of the island of Ireland, which yes “divides” the UK. It is not harsh, it is not manipulative, it is just a logical outcome.

Reference your comment about Cameron (which Boris then misquoted) - if as a result of the UK leaving the EU, a hard border reappears in Ireland and the troubles return, he’d be right wouldn’t he?

Cold reality will impose another U-Turn on this government, they have U-Turned on everything else, it is only because this is their “mandated mission” that they have not done so here yet. They can bluster and accuse and spin but financial reality kicks in eventually and the US telling them to get lost if they mess with Ireland is the same shot across the bows as it was back when over Suez.

Yes - it amuses me that the Brexiteers ' Special Relationship' gets trumped by the Irish 'Very Special Relationship'. Not very world savvy are they! Duh!

Yes that’s the problem when your world view is shaped by gunboat diplomacy..... it only works as long as you have the bigger gun.

The Irish got their revenge by quite literally integrating a significant percentage of their population with the biggest gun boat owner.

The UK hardly has any boats anymore, let alone guns to put on them. We were darn lucky that Hiltler declared war on the USA after Pearl Harbour and attacked Russia or that lesson would have been very painfully learned in 1942 ....

I see May knows right from wrong and has more class and backbone than than all of Johnsons' government put together.

She gave in to the EU on all sorts of fronts, that's why Boris is having a hard time trying to convince the EU that they can't control us.

Actually SC she gave-away nothing, signed nothing, agreed nothing.

That current problems - the WA are all of your own making and your hero Johnson. Now grow a pair and own them.
